grandma's amaryllis

OK you amaryllis experts! I need some help identifying my grandmother's hippeastrum. I'm pretty sure she might have received it from her sister who lived in Panama during the building of the Panama Canal. The sister's husband was an engineer on the project. I believe it is a species. And my cousin has one, too. I have found many names on line (h. reginae, h. puniceum from Barbados, a. equestris) but no photos that correspond. I did find a print by Redoute that looks similar. There is a project on Panamanian lilies, but no where to send pics. Any ideas??

Baa,
I'm so excited!!! Thank you! I will write to my cousin. We've both been asking anyone who would listen and trying to do our own research. Is there anything I should tell her? It appears to be from Brazil. Is it a common species? It says it is easy to grow and that's true!!

PS Haven't checked lately, but do you mean "gravel" when you say "grit"? I'm finally potting the goniogarpa grossa today.

I'll be honest I don't know if it's common where you are, it's not common in the UK, and it looks like it's being well looked after as it is :)

Sorry I did mean to answer that, I was also trying to think of a suitable retort to Lophophora but forgot. Grit is like a small grade, sharp gravel, it doesn't make a lot of difference if you use grit or gravel it just gives the slimeys something more to navigate before eating the plant!
