Ipomoea indica seeds

Rose Hill, NC(Zone 8a)

Thanks to several good folks that sent me cuttings last winter and some I. indica seeds from Cal. and New Zealand THNAKS ALL YOU GOOD TRADERS >> I HAVE YOU ALL TO THANK :-)
I was able to get seed pods! :-)
I have been growing I. indica for at least 5 years and never got the fist seed, even by hand pollinating. There must of been 7,000+ blooms in that time.
I have been told this species does not self pollinate and the only way to get seeds is to cross different "strains."
So that is what I did. AND IT WORKED! :-)
I also left one original "mama" vine to see it the insects would do some pollinating? YES they did! I have seed pods on this vine that I didn't do! yea nature a work without Man!
Probably 70% of the pods had only one seed. Some as many as 5 seeds.
I threw in some I. nil pollen just for kicks. Thanks to "Charley" my ID tags were blown off. But some of these pods had seed. So now I will have to plant all the seeds and see what come from them. LOL
My yard next summer will be covered in vines. lol
My seed count is at 313 as of today! I am hoping for some different colored blooms?
I will keep you all posted
Larry

my pc is still in the hospital lol
so once I get it back I will be on line much more
PS: I owe some folks cuttings so please let me know who they are
I just hope all my files are going to found?

Hi Larry, Congratulations on your accomplishment. I sent you cuttings this past March. I can't grow this vine anymore because it has proven too aggressive and too invasive for my area. It escaped to the hill below my house and is now clamoring to get back into my yard! I'm constantly yanking out vines that creep back in. Maybe this vine is better in colder zones. Anyway, if you could send me something fragrant in return, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

That is great Larry! I apparently have something compatible in my yard too because mine have also set a few seed this year....

Laurrie, that is a beautiful bloom!

Oh man, I am very happy for you.. mine have not ever set a seed. I am with Laurrie, if you need a grower in Southern Cal.. I'm your MAN..lol Here is some chocolate for you (seeds given to me by Pudgymudpies), it is Rose Silk, but looks alot like chocolate milk to me the later in the day it gets and they are fresh from this morning.. Congrats on your pollination efforts.... Antoinette

I have a question for you morning glory growers. My ipomoea "Blue Dawn" and Japanese Shirayuki both have tiny little plale green flying insects on them that are sucking the juices out of the leaves. Would Bayer Rose Systemic kill them?

minigrannie, try rubbing alcohol, hydrogen Peroxide, and water (mix in a spray bottle and mist the them at three day intervals in the morning for about a week or longer to make sure you get the eggs they lay too as they hatch., the alcohol should dry the bugs up. It has really worked for me with mites and none of my plants now have any bugs, except the brugs, they have some kind of striped beetle that looks like a June bug. I hate to say this, I just pour some into the hand sprayer. Don't spray them in the middle of the day because the sun will burn the leaves. You can also spray them and then after a few minutes spray them down with water, but usually the alcohols dries up pretty fast. The exact recipe is on the Brug Forum under Tips by Brugie..

MInigrannie, it sounds like those are aphids. I just give them a good blast with the hose, but Antoinette's method sounds better.

Antoinette, those are cucumber beetles and the eat huge amounts! They have a hard shell for a body so I'm not sure what would work on them. I just pick them off and smash them. Probably Malathion or Diazonin would work.

Talstar works great for cucumber beetles and doesn't mess up the flowers or buds. It is expensive, but I've spent so much on things that don't work, I don't mind finally finding something that will work.

Clare, yes, they do have a hard body and eat alot... I have been hosing them off, and stepping on some, they hide too, they start to dig right into the leaves and hide. These same beetles are now eating two of my Datura plants. What I did yesterday with the Daturas, I just cut off all the branches that were eaten and hope they get shrubby or something..

Antoinette, they do do serious damage to the brugs and daturas! Your daturas should be all right.

Larry! This sounds wonderful! Im sorry that Charley redecorated a bit for you, but glad things are ok there.

Larry, the plants here also have seeds.. the cuttings I sent are from these plants and I decided to check them out, and all of them have pods, collected about 100 seeds today. I was not expecting any. Had to climb up on a ladder, but what the heck.. lol. (afraid of heights here).. This is the first year I notice any pods on these. Antoinette

Larry's computer has crashed and he wants me to inform here about it - he used a friend's PC to e-mail me when he replied to my letter.
