To Brugie:
Guess I didn't describe my" accident" very well. I have an awning over one of my decks and during Charley it fell on a table I had my Echeveria 'Lola" on and broke the flower that I had been watching for a month and waiting for. It is, I guess , the mother ( not sure it has chicks) because it is in a 3" pot by itself. It looked just like the one on the plantdatabase photo that had been sent in by Zanymuse on Aug 6, 2001. Really just lost the bloom, but all the rain (for days) also rotted it and I've had to remove a bunch of leaves. Am trying my best and still learning about succulents. They seem to do best when I ignore them-but I'm not an ignoring kind of gardener. I know from your gorgeous brugs you know what I mean. Don't have any brugs but would love to start. Should I wait til Spring to get one?
Brug Update
To Brugie:
One other brug question. Does a brug flower hang its head down and a datura grow its head upwards? Is that the difference? Or are they completely different species? Do you have both or just brugs?
Jay
Jay, yes, you have brug and datura blooms figured out. I have grown both and this year I do have two datura plants, but they aren't growing well for me at all. In the past I've had good luck with them, but I do prefer brugs. I'm getting too old to have to cut off datura seed pods every day. Datura would be very invasive for you if you didn't keep the pods cleaned up too. The doubles aren't as bad as the singles. Both Datura and Brugmansia are from the Solanaceae family.
I can imagine that anyone with succulents would have had some trouble during the rainy times caused by Charles. It's too bad about the awning falling and breaking the bloom. Maybe you can find another one later and try again.
Diane,
That was such a beautiful love story! Your gorgeous home, barn and gardens are the "icing on the cake"!
Brugie,
Haven't been on the computer much cause I've been glued to the t.v. watching the Olympics! Especially MD's swimming sensation, Michael Phelps.
I actually had to look up Lexington Park on Map Quest because I wasn't familiar where it was located. Your D.H. was in Southern MD, I'm located more in the center of the state. Since he was in the Navy, it makes sense that he would be stationed in Lexington Park, which is right outside the Pautuxent Naval Air Station.
fantastic story. Your husband is truely a master artisan. Thanks for sharing with us. I only wish my house was as nice as your barn. Do you actually keep animals in it. I can't imagine that you would. I am afraid to even think of what the doghouse and the birdhouse would look like. Your house, your barn, your property and your story is definately a work of art.
Hi, nadabigfarm -
Thank you for the nice compliments..no no animals in the Barn. For now it just houses yard equiment like wheelbarrows, lawnmower, Johns stock of wood he uses for various building projects, some of his collection of over 200 antique marine pulleys, sawhorses, ladders...etc.
We only have one pet...Stella - this is her sleeping under one of my plants..

KRNYSGIRL:
Your pretty kitty looks just like my Whipper Snapper (lady kitty) who is 17. Whip has a great personality and is in love w our Pyrenees, Smooth. Sometimes they sit next to each other (close as they can possibly get) and Whipper Snapper wraps her tail around him (like an arm). Need to get a pic of them.
Stella looks like she's definetly the star in your family.
Also, that is the prettiest petunia pot. Must be a wave. You must be very good at deadheading..
And that container makes it also-on a pedestal.
Jay
Diane, I am touched by your love story, it is great that fate worked for you& John
Your House, barn & gardens are beautiful, it is evident that your life is blessed in many ways. Thanks for the smile & the tear.
Bj
I just had to bring this one back up again. I LOVE your pictures of your home.
Me to Liz and have you noticed that we have gone from Pinks to Yellow's now....mostly? I'ts good to see yellow brugs for a change.
from datdog on Aug17
WOW! WOW! WOW! Does John have a brother that is as talented as he is? Oh wait, I'm married. Never mind.
ROTFL....I was thinking exactly the same thing. I mean it's not like I'm thinking "too bad I'm already married", but man it'd be nice for my DH to wake up one morning suddenly embued with some amount of handyman talent! ROTFL
OMG! I'm just head over heels in love with all the work John has done there. The house, the barn (HEY!, I'd be more than happy to live in the barn....it's so gorgeous! Ya'll must have some very happy chickens or whatever else lives there LOL...oops I just read further on that there aren't any animals LOL), the stone walls creating all those absolutely heavenely beds where YOU'VE created such lovely color displays with all your flowers! I could just walk around and around and around your garden all day for months on end and never stop going "Oh wow! Oh wow! Oh wow!" :-)
Those doors! All of those doors! I'm stunned.....just stunned!
AND you have a frog pond that looks a whole lot like it's big enough to be a duck pond!
I'm just gonna sit here and cry.....you live in a fairytale!
And now I finished reading the story of how you two got back together after such a long separation. What a truly heart touching, 'they lived happily ever after' story. I'm so veyr happy for you that you finally found your true love again. Thank you for sharing all of this with us!
-Julie
Julie...thank you for bringing this thread back up! I was just going to look for it and mark it for when I have time to re-read it!
All I can think is....'fairytales DO COME TRUE"!!!
So happy for you Diane....
Margie
Wow Diane! You live in zone 6b and you already have all that going outdoors? I must move back to Walla Walla, where I grew up, 3 hours south of here, but warmer climate!
Karrie...don't move too quickly...the date on most of the posts is August 2004 !!!
ahhhhhh my sleepy eyes didn't catch that! More coffee! :-)
HAHAHA I do that all the time.
Diane, your pictures are wonderful you are one lucky lady, they remind me so much of England, so many country places there have lots of big rocks, and boulders, and most all have lovely flower gardens, are you sure you and your husband are not in England *LOL*
