Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hi, All - here's an updated pic of my Brugs I post once a month or so...

Dr Seuss on left - Jean Pasco on right...

We got the remnants of Charley blow through CT last night - not too bad - but I put my brug babies in the barn just in case.

Dianne, your patio is beautiful and what shows of the house is marvelous. I can only guess the rest has a great deal of architectural class too. Amazing job.

Thanks for all your nice comments...

My house was built by my husband, all by hand, in the early 1970s when he was ony 24 years old. It is constructed completely of hand cut granite. It was styled after a 16th century english cottage. It sits on almost 10 acres and he has build stone walls around the entire yard. Can you tell I am proud of him?? Here is a pic of the house from the front and I will share one more in another reply of the back yard and barn. The barn he built by hand also - it is a post and beam victorian barn - 3 stories high. I just love living there...it's got a real old-world feel to it. Anyway..I am rambling..

Thanks again for your nice comments.

A stone mason and the lady gardener .....sounds like the name of a good movie IMHO .... lol

This is your thread my dear , You can post anything you wish .

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

LOL..you are all sweet - okay..here is a pic of John, the love of my life..besides a wonderful mason, he also does blacksmithing - he did not make these beautiful iron fences - he bought them from a local estate that was being torn down and he is restoring them - they are part of a new garden John is making me in our side yard - It will be a 50 x 75 ft garden enclosed by stone walls and and iron gates - it will take him another year or two to complete - but I am very excited about it. I will definitely have to quit my job and stay home to tend my garden - LOL. I will have LOTs of brugs and Dats in that garden!

I will share a few more pics below..

Here's is another few of more of my flower beds from the backyard looking up to the front yard.. That is a large ship anchor in the foreground - John made a stone flower bed around it and I use it as a trellis in the summer..

In the middle is an old stone watering trough used for horses in the 18th century..

WOW! WOW! WOW! Does John have a brother that is as talented as he is? Oh wait, I'm married. Never mind. What a beautiful house and garden. Your husband is very talented. Heck, at 24 I could never have been that focused to built anything- heck a stick house would have been too much. Where did he learn his skill? Please post more pictures.... I'm in love with all the stone work. I'm such a rock hound.
Okay, I'll check back in later for more pictures. I'm suppose to be packing and getting ready for vacation.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Great pictures. You are so lucky to have such a talented husband. Your place looks absolutely wonderful. I love the rock work around the buildings too. There has been a lot of back breaking work done there. Are the stones from your property? I love it all.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Can't tell you enough how beautiful your place is. You are one lucky girl!

Oh my gosh, that is an awesome view. In your picture posted at 2:28 on the sixteenth, what are the doors made of that are on the building to the right of the house? Would love to see a close up of them.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Brugie - That building is the victorian barn. The doors are made of western cedar - John designed them and had a master carpenter build them. He made all the hardware on the doors - hinges, handles, etc from iron on an old fashioned blacksmith forge. Here is a closer view of the barn from the side where those doors are. I will post a pic of the front of the barn and the doors there (also of western cedar next..

Here's the way the barn looks from the front yard - these doors were just made and installed about 2 months ago.

Diane, those doors are gorgeous. With the trees changing in the first picture, the doors really blend in well. I can't get over the work your husband has done here. Does he work a paying job as well? The poor guy must never take time off. I told my husband all about your place and we looked you up on the map. Gosh, you are very close to the ocean. You guys really have something to be so proud of. I wanted to ask if you have the rock on your property or if it had to be purchased. I'm so in awe of all of this. Can't wait to see the new fencing with the iron gates. That will be a great addition. Thanks for sharing all of this with us. I've sure enjoyed it all.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Great pictures Diane....More , More , More !

I love the iron work you have too. One of these days I hope to get some nice old pieces of iron.

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Your home garden and plants all are very beautiful , neat and nice.
Brugs plant is gorgeous.

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Brugie - thanks - yes, he his legacy is this property -- he has poured his heart and soul into it for 30 years. The stone was obtained from lots of sources - he made a lot of deals in the 70s when he was building the house to purchase the stone from mansions they were tearing down around here. Our back steps came from the old Clinton Town Bank, and we have two stone fireplaces that he bought from an old Inn where Lafayette stayed centuries ago..when they took down the Inn John bought the fireplaces and reassembled them in our living room and kitchen.

Here's a pic of the newest doors he made - these are on the back of the house leading into the cellar. He just installed these doors 2 weeks ago.

Oh, wow. I just continue to be floored by his talent -- both of yours -- your gardens and this architecture together are matchless. Gosh, ever think of renting out a room as a B&B?

Wow! Diane, what a marvelous house and garden you and you husband has created. I love the English cottage style and I can't have enough of enjoying your pictures. They have atmosphere :)
