Managing grass for wildlife

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Does anyone here know the best times to cut grass in a meadow (some of it under orchard trees) to encourage the spring flowering orchids and also the butterflies that are there please?

I've looked in a couple of places and seen conflicting views :(
I'd be really grateful :)

I think that will vary with location. I never mow until all the desired wildflowers have mature seeds. We have far more wildflowers now than 6 years ago. We had no Primroses the first year, dug up a few from the ditch, and now we have 27,582,971 Primroses this year, some still blooming.

Would you mow just once?

LOL
How long did it take you to count the primroses?

Several mows after the first. The wildflowers bloom best on short grass in the spring.

About an hour to count. Just count number on one square yard, then count square yards, then multiply, then guess. Still counting stragglers.

Thanks that's a real help :)

You are welcome. :D
