Darius - tell me all about it!

Hello! Noticed you were back on the board! I've been in turmoil for almost a week, wondering what the heck this reiki business *really* is, and why it helps my plants so much. You had mentionned in an earlier thread (can't seem to find it now?) that you had been a practitioner for a few years. Can you tell me all about it - what have they done to me, and why does it work? I do it, and it works, but the reasons why are beyond me.

Pisces, Reiki is a very old Buddhist healing technique that was lost for eons. In the late 1800's or early 1900's a Buddhist monk went on a long sorta retreat and was given the Reiki symbols from the Universe at the end of his 40 day fast, as far as I remember the story. Just before WW2, knowing what was coming for Japan, he gave the instructions to a woman who took them to Hawaii, and several years after the war, she started teaching it... It took a long time for acceptance here in the states, but is now widely accepted, and practiced. Especially here in Asheville, dubbed "Sedona of the East".

My understanding is that when finishing the first class of Reiki, a person is "infused" with those symbols, which allows that person to bring Universal energy (both magnetic and electrical, I think) through their hands, into whatever healing they choose. Thus, being a pass-through of some sorts, I guess. Since I wouldn't understand the Universe unless I were God, I just have to accept that it works, and accept that I have been 'given' the symbols that make it work.

Whern I first started taking Reiki classes, in 1984, it cost then $10,000 to become a Reiki Master; now, I could probably do it for around $600-$1,000. The only thing being a Reiki Master would give me (over the Reiki 1, Reiki 2, and Advanced Reiki classes I have taken) is the ability to infuse someone else with the symbols. Taking Advanced Reiki gave me the ability to send Healing Energy over long distances. I have seen it work, and STILL do not fully understand it! (Here, I need to confess that I probably always had 'healing hands' and rejected it for years, feeling "unworthy". Reiki gave me some structure for using that ability, so I am never sure if I am doing Reiki, or my own schtick.)

As a tidbit... there is a great lesson in energy and the effect on plants in the early parts of The Celestine Prophecy. It is not tied to Reiki, and anyone can do it with amazing results!

thanks so much. I do love Reiki so much, and being an obsessive academic, I always feel the need to "understand". Foolish lady.

I've noticed that many who practice Reiki or other "laying on of hands"-type healing often have an affinity for it long before they take active steps to learn it.

Thanks, too, for the tip on plant-healing. I'd begun reading the Celestine Prophecy a few years ago, but never finished. Maybe I'll pick it up again....

The Celestine Prophecy blew me away because it resonnated (sp?) so much with where I was spiritually at that time. Many found it elementary, but even at that, I thought it was a good explanation/example of How Things Work on that level... as Shakespeare said, "More things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio..." or something like that.

I WAS an academic once... now just put my pants on one leg at a time like everyone else, LOL!

So... academics wear pants? That's probably why they look at me so funny when I walk down the hall lol. I'm still new at this whole academia business - a convert. Still alot to learn....

More things in heaven and earth? Gosh, I hope so. If there is only what I know, then there ain't a whole lot :) It takes strength of understanding to be able to explain something at an elementary level. It wasn't the elementary nature of the book that made me put it down, it was nanny-goated literary elitism. Booo on the fish! Fish should never, ever be nanny-goats. It's not becoming. Besides nanny-goats can't swim.

Speaking of fish, I will definitely tell Ryan that YOU ARE NOT FROM HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH. He'll probably be disappointed, but my life will be simpler. The duress was not as bad as I made it out to be - he had bought coffee, and I owed him one.

I second that emotion!

The best part about Reiki (and I'm sure the same holds true with other healing techniques, although I've never used any others) is that the more open you become to the goodness of it, the stronger it flows. I LOVE that. Definitely the best part about it. It's so difficult to be open, truly open, to good. To find something that is good, and to feel free enough to be vulnerable to it, well it's just liberating. And practicing it is receiving it! Wowsers! Reiki is like twenty seven million miracles rolled into one.

That's it! I'm through with trying to understand Reiki. It's like trying to understand love - just can't be done. From now on, I'm satisfied with just enjoying it.
