Odd Containers - Part II

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

With the success of the first Odd Containers thread, I thought I would start a second thread with renewed vigor.

Not only do I encourage you to continue posting photos of whimsically odd and unusual containers, I also invite you to post photos of odd and unusual things you plant in those containers.

For example...

Now that's the best lookin' "sprout" I've seen in a long while!! LOL!

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Granddaddy is trying to make a gardener out of her already. That is the prettiest I have seen one of the tire planters look so far.... even prettier than the painted one all decked out with painted flowers.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

It's not my granbaby Elena, but just as purddy. This is my neice.

Thank ya Brenda!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

I openned this tread and just busted up, had my HD come and look, wish I could grow things that pretty!!!!!

How adorable.
Well, no thyme like the present to show this guy. Everything went to his head.

"no thyme" Good one!
Cute and a cute container also. (The guys not the cutest in the world but the container is.)

got tired of our cowboy hats falling off the hooks all the time, so decided to put them to good use.

this has Sedum Dasyphyllum 'Himalayan Skies' planted in it.

Still working on another 'container'. It's finished, but I have to get it planted up first. Finally was able to get some plants for it today.
I could show you a picture of it now, unplanted, but think I will keep you in suspence till it's 'potted' up and then I will post a picture of it.

I'm guessing styrofoam coolers.

:^)))

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

First of all, without guessing what it is, I love what you have planted in it! Looks like some coleus, maybe some sweet tater vine, and sedum perhaps?

And now for my guess, is it an old cooler? Probably not, that'd be to easy eh? How 'bout the frame that encloses a computer monitor? Lookin at the second photo ain't helpin me any, but I like it too. The paint job, or whatever it is you've decorated it with looks really neat.

Bravo ddiva! Funtastic job!

TC...

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

Actually you are both partly right - about the styrofoam part anyway. Actually they are the containers that pet stores get tropical fish in - I visit this particular pet store all the time for pet food and I just asked for a couple and they gave me three. The paint job is just spray paint - black, brown and grey.

The best part to me is the big one is large enough to grow about anything and it was free!!!

Its not sweet tater TC its Purple Queen tradescantia in the larger pot, and the "sedum" is portulaca. Not much will grow here right now - next year I'm going to load them down with stuff. Oh and the dark stuff in the front one is some kinda alternafolia, ie. Joseph's Coat.

Never again will I pay for a large pot! (Nor will I ever make hypertufa - this is just too easy!!!)

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

We always used painted styrofoam to look like stones in drama club back in high school in mumble mumble mumble nine. looks real authentic and stony in the stage lights. Great recycling! I love the palm tree next to the smaller one. which palm is that, delph?

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

What a nice and inviting looking place! Very creative!

Birmingham, AL(Zone 8a)

I have no idea. See what a plant authority I am? :)

All I know is its the one we wave at church on Palm Sunday. They are everywhere around here. You mean they actually have a name?

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Yeah, we call them "Palm Sunday Palms". LOL! Just kidding! I've never heard anything but that.

Some of you have asked me how do I make the little pair of shorts to stay standing. I posted the directions here at the following link. I have also stiffened a pair of little infants coverhauls, but nothing planted in it yet. I haven't used these outside, so don't know how they will hold up to weather conditions. These can also be decorated up for holidays, using artifical flowers if you wish. Just have fun with this project.
They are a very messy process and it does take time. Not an overnight thing to do.

Delphiniumdiva, that "palm sunday palm" looks like a "Sago" palm. Very popular for use in Hotel Landscaping. I was in Las Vegas in April, and they were everywhere!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

You're both right, lol, I bought it about 3 years ago to put plants in, I was originally going to hang it on the wall, but I like it the way it is, I've been looking for a long time for a regular chamber pot to put a plant in, since I remember using one in my childhood in Beljium at my Grandmother's house, I have an english bedroom one, quite beautifull in our bedroom encased in wood, looks like miniature toilet, LOL

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

cute idea!!

Castro Valley, CA(Zone 9a)

Here's another of mine, Annie

Here's a cool one I got from my DD a few years ago. My DH thinks he's evil looking...lol.

Edited to add: that's a young bird's nest fern growing in the "evil" face.
