I started a Magnolia Tripetala tree from seed a few years ago without doing much research on it. Its now getting 4-5' tall and I'm wondering if its really worth the space! I googled it and found many negative comments. Rank fragrance e.g. Does anyone have first hand experience with this tree?
Experience w/Magnolia Tripetala?
I have had a Magnolia tripetula for 7 or 8 year now. I am quite happy with it. Its leaves tear quite easily in wind, so mine is planted near my house on the north side and i keep it pruned to below the roof level to keep the wind from tearing the leaves. It has 2 or 3 blooms each year, they are not particularly impressive but I never notice any unpleasant odor. The leaves will get as much as 24" long and 10" or so wide, quite tropical looking. Hope that helps. Donna
Thanks Donna. Mine is planted in a fairly open area but we're on a ridge along a "mountain range" so its somewhat protected. (Quotes on mountain since none are anywhere near the size of the mountains of the west!)
