Fantastic , you have too big vegg. garden. What you do with these vegitables? No one can cook these altogether. But after all you have beautiful vegitables and garden.
Our Spring '04 veggie garden pics
We'd used the Old Farmers Almanac, for a small forever .. but have since found a calendar that further simplies the 'right time' to do/and AVOID all of the 'whats and whens' for each day of the week/month!
Appreciate the web link!! I'll sure be taking a look at it ..
Tam .. I'll bet that you will be 'luvin' the Golden Bantam!! First year we've tried it. Have usually planted G-90 or Meriit corn. A couple of years ago, we planted Peaches n'Cream, which is a two-toned ear!! hee hee .. It too, was extremely d-lishus!
gumlla .. I do plan to mix/chunk a few of these veggies all into one freezer bag (or canning jar) .. for a veggie 'ready' mix - for soups and stews!! Will come in real handy during our winters .. Mmmm, good!
Oh you use these in winters , then you are right to grow veggies alot.
I'm finding a lot of these (the pic below) .. up toward the top of my Christmas Lima Bean plants!! I've also noticed quite a number of our beautiful little Indigo Buntings darting about, around, and over our veggie garden. I can see them while sitting on my porch - and quite well, when lookin' thru my digital camera - accessing the max zoom capability!
I honestly think that it's these little blue beauties (the Indigo) that are doing this damage!!
I've just never thought about it, or considered anything other than a dadblasted ol crow or an occasional Blue Jay .. to be so ... so 'thieverish' !!!
Guess we can 'share' ... HEE
Regarding the above mentioned moon gardening, would anyone interested please give your comment here...

Veggie garden (update) pics !! .. Pic #3
.. a t'mater still on the vine ..
Incidentally, someone had asked (a wee bit back up the line here) .. about the variety/s we'd planted. I know we planted several varieties .. from Big Boy, Better Boy, a few Beef Steak, and few Roma tomatoes, and a few others.
Now, ask me which are which - ? - Wellll, we no longer have even the slightest of clues!! .. LOL ..
I know that they're all just plum d-lishusly good eatin' !!
hee hee
Veggie garden (update) pics !! .. Pic #5
.. some of my Lopers 'hangin' in there!! .. hee hee
I've found 'signs' that, perhaps a raccoon (or something!) .. has taken a serious interest in taking a wee nibble on the lopes, and snatchin' themselves their very own t'mater .. right off the vine.
Thank goodness, the sweet corn's already harvested!!
Well, it's really no big ol deal, for there's penty to share; even with the vermin. Only thing is .. the dadburned varmint just had to go pick himself out .. the very biggest jes 'almost' perfectly ripe t'mater to chomp on!! And the rascal only ate half of it! Now, that gets in my craw a bit ..
.. LOL .. LOL ..
Veggie garden (update) pics !! .. Pic #6
.. Here's that big ol purtee t'mater that the varmint 'stole', chomped on .. then, abandoned half-eaten!! ..
(.. and .. LOL .. the guilty party .. wasn't the 'human' varmint that's holding the t'mater in this pic, either !!!)
Geez, I was jes a wee bit miffed, when I found it laying in the garden!! What makes it so truly bad, is .. that I'd already long had MY name on it!! By golly, that t'mater was sposed to been MINE!! .. LOL LOL ..
Veggie garden (update) pics !! .. Pic #9
This .. in one of the lopes, that I'd missed seeing .. to realize too late .. that it'd managed to grow within one of the large 'holes' in the wire fence panel. When I saw it - dumb me figured that I could jes 'ever so easily and carefully' give it a lil shove out from between the wires ..
Wellllll, needless to say .. I thought it was easy, but apparently .. twasn't quite as careful as I'd thought - for it tumbled out of the wire hole, and in it's heaviness .. just yanked itself completey off the vine. Lesson learned, I reckon ...
Actually, maybe two lessons! I took it on down to the house, and gave it a slice open ... and oh goodness gracious me!! Judging by the smell and the taste (yep, I sampled it!) ... apparently, it won't be too much longer, before some of the larger lopes will be ripening!
Mmm, that 'loupe sure looks good =)
Mine just started setting & are about the size of a nickle!
My last 2 store boughts have been terrible lately too.
Oh, magpye, I wsh we aere neighbors, I would trade you that cantloupe for a winter squash or watermelon, it just looks so juicy and good!!! Keep up the good work, and get them maters in quicks before any more get half eaten. My granny always said the bugs don't eat much, but she wasn't referring to vermin I am sure. I found a half eaten cuke today! At least when they eat my beans, they take the whole thing LOL
Magpye and others with pest animal problems, I am sorry that you have those rascals. in your garden. I am lucky I guess only have to so far anyway contend with birds eating my garden. Built a bird netting cage around my two large thornless blackberry bushes to keep birds out, also had to build a larger cage around the Lapins cherry tree.
Magpye your garden is just great. do you bag all your melons. Mine are just growing along on the ground. have 6 hills, and have eaten two small melons. A couple more are nearing ripeness. The ground under the melons is heavily mulched with the poplar shreds from the 35 trees I had shredded three years ago. Donna
Magpie, your pictures have my mouth watering! I'm a wee bit jealous of your beautiful garden. We can't grow most of those wonderful veggies up here in Alaska, and just one of those beautiful tomatoes would be like solid gold here!
An old friend from Indiana came over for dinner and brought fresh sweet corn from home. We all treated it like cavier!
.. so glad to see that YOU'RE enjoying the pics .. thank you!
Hang in thar .. Oregonics .. them lopes'll be along and ready to eat soon!!.. hee hee ..
weez .. mine's still waterin' .. for they're not quite 'ready' yet .. but I'll fight the coon, or whatever it is .. to get ONE of 'em, at least !! .. lol .. (Welll, it depends - no bear! .. for I do have mah limits!) HEE hee
We've accumulated a small 'wealth' of shavings from some rough 'sawmill' oak boards that we've been planing, for some furniture - that I've made sure to put aside for mulching my flower beds before winter! If my hubby (my ol coot!) .. had his way, he'd have long had it in the garden .. but then, he'd turn it all under as soon as everything in the garden's done! And .. here I'd be (again) .. with no flower bed mulch! .. hee hee .. And lord knows, he'd faint .. should I merely mention buying any!! LOL (So, I haint lettin' him touch MY wood shavings!!) Hee Hee
We don't always grow our veggies 'up' .. but I've found that we have less problems with bugs and critters, and rot .. when we 'trellis' them.
rutholive and tamarafaye .. hee hee .. The thing that is really tickin' me about the vermin .. LOL .. is merely that I can't ever manage to catch 'em!! With my cam'ra -- TO GET A PITTER OF 'em !! .. LOL LOL .. Now, haint tat plum silly?!? .. hee hee hee ..
Talk aboutcha long distance 'sharin'! .. hee ..
You'd be most welcome to come sit and have a bite with me most anytime .. !!
hey .. speaking of beans AND birds; did you guys see the pic I'd posted elsewhere? (geez, I don't even remember) ... but I'll post it here now ..
Would this be the birds that are pecking my butter beans thru, and right outta the shell ?? I've been real suspicious of our sweet innocent little Indigo Buntings that I'm always seeing darting about 'over' the garden ... Been tellin' myself they were after the bugs, and we're 'benefitting' from them. HAH .. fraid I'm gonna have to face facts ... and it's been the other way around!! .. LOL ... What ya think?
Magpye, I don't think the buntings would peck into your beans like that. Do you have any kind of Jays, they might do that. I love to see the occasional Indigo bunting that comes here. I leave a wild bird seedling I think millet grow for them. Donna
Our Jays eat with that pattern, Mags. Lovely, idn't it?
Thanks for the input .. I'd simply put it all to being the Indigos, for I'd always see them flitting to and fro over the garden - and have yet to 'see' any Blue Jays around the garden area .. don't see them around here very often at all. Could be why, 'ey? .. hee
Pics from Veggie garden beds .. 'behind' our house & shed .. Pic #1
The ol Coot (hubby) decided to use and plant some seed left over from last year. Relatively certain that they're the Dixie Jubilee ... Our water melon vines have decided to go elsewhere .. rather, every where!! .. Hee hee
Usually have been able to keep tabs on the vines, and keep them in the beds and up out of the yard ...
Pics from Veggie garden beds .. 'behind' our house & shed .. Pic #2
The New Jewell sweet tater plants .. comin' along real well. These are the improved Centennial ...
We're both anxious to see how these produce and yeild .. since it's our first time planting these slips.
But, of course, the taste will be of utmost relevance!! It'll be awhile yet, before we get a chance to find out ..
END of .. Pics from Veggie garden beds .. 'behind' our house & shed .. Pic #3
Another pic of the 'Yeller' Crook-neck Squash ... I swear to goodness, I don't ever recall the plants getting so large and spread out like this! Maybe that Walmart 'equivalent' of the Miracle Gro' .. is just 'as good' after all !!
Truly glad we opted to put it elsewhere. For it would've occupied far too much space in the big garden up top ... Whew!
Magpye, I found you! You have a beautiful garden. It takes me back to my childhood. I used to go every summer to my Aunt and Uncle's house on the East side of the sierras. They had a porch - and a rocking chair that could be the same. How old did you say that chair was?
The had a pack ranch there near Independence California.
We spent our visiting time stringing beans, shelling peas, picking berries, everything to prepare the vegetables so that my Aunt could put them up. But we had enough time to push each other into the frog pond, chase the horses and catch them. We slept outside on the lawn and we helped pack the mules. Did I call this a vacation?
Your garden is just beautiful. I can almost taste everything in it. Great pictures. Thanks!
Magpye,
Just found this thread, what a beautiful garden!!! I can only imagine the countless hours you have to spend in a garden like this, you gotta love it!
Thanks for all the beautiful pictures, now I really got spring fever!
Doss .. thank you so much, for your kindness and compliments, and sharing a lil piece of some of your wonderful memories also. Besides, it 'sounds' like you may have had one of 'em (ruff) childhoods !! .. (*grinnin' big here*) .. LOL .. Aren't such memories plum spun gold tho' !!
Big_Red ... Thank you kindly .. for your admiration of our lil garden plot. It's not really all that hard a work, per say .. especially if one pays a lil attention to the moon signs! ... Heck, I do bleeve our hardest work is determining which one of us can make out the planting calender good nuff to tell which day, to do what, on - and remember it long enuff to get it done! (*heehee*) .. Wellllll, that .. and the gatherin' of all 'em doggone sticks and stakes, and tying all up and together, the way we did last year! .. lol
And dagblast it .. here I am, waitin' on more of a bit o'winter-time .. to properly fill the bill, 'cause of some of the reason we moved here - - and the rest of ye, are a callin' up Spring already! .. hee hee .. Reckon we'll take whatever comes up .. (*grinnin' anotha big'un*) ..
Judging from the way so much of the plant life is comin' alive, and the lil Black & White Warblers are a singin' - Spring'll certainly be here purtee soon.

Magpye, you have a beautiful garden and I for one sure have enjoyed seeing all the pics. Sure gives us newbie's somethign to look forward too.
You got some more pics? Nice to see a neat -well tended garden on this cloudy and rainy dismal day.
Wanna do my yard now? LOL
Wow! Just found this thread. What an awesome garden. Sure wish I had that much room to grow. Keep them pics coming - Flip
Magpye,
I found this link on a thread by trunnels showing her flowers. I have always aspired to have gardens like trunnels but was a great disappointment to my Dear Daddy because I didn't grow anything to eat. He was a wonderful veggie gardener and how proud he would have been to have a child with gardens like yours. :-) They are wonderful and I can just imagine the taste of those vine ripened tomatoes!
Sugarfoot
Thank you guys sooo much ...
And, a big ol 'hearty' welcome to DG, to ya .. aries44 !!!
starlight1153, you don't 'appear' to be a newbie .. but, I don't recall seeing you pop up in any of the forums .. so, a 'hello' and a 'hearty' welcome to you also !! .. (*hee*)
- Magpye
sugarfoot .. I reckon, that somehow .. our posts, 'overlapped'! .. That was jes plum sweet of you. Thank you so much. I'll bet your daddy was mitey proud of you in many other areas tho' ... (*huggerooners*)
Heck, I read your post .. and now I'm picturing 'em ripe t'maters - and, is makin' my mouth water .. all over again, too! .. hee hee ..

magpye - i don't know how in the world i missed this post but i did. it must be great to have your garden so close to the house.
it was greatg to see how the garden progressed during the season. thanks for the pictures.
A mitey late 'howdy' to you, HERBIE43 !! ..
Besides, you may have merely 'misplaced' it afterwards - but you sure nuff took a look at it, and posted .. back in July of '04!! And all, has been very much appreciated ... Thank you.
(Most ashamedly) .. I'd've probably not seen your post, if I wouldn't have specificly been lookin' for this thread .. to provide a link to it, to someone else's inquiry!! There is sooo much 'stuffs' to monitor .. that I kinda let my own go by the wayside ...
Ours .. is one of those gardens that we 'look up to' (truly!) .. Can't see much from the house, mindja .. but we still gotta 'look up to it'! .. LOL
We let the ground 'rest' this past year .. but are planning a '06 Spring garden. Hopin' to get a few 'cool' crops put into the ground early, again .. this year also.
- Magpye
Magpye, your cool crops are probably our summer crops here. We plant brassicas in late May or early June... lettuces, Chard, leeks, too. These are probably off season crops for you.
It's been a long time since I had my vegetable garden.. I think about 4 years no garden due house building and baby.. Now I am all READY to have veg. gardens. Exciting about it.. I even can't wait to start break the ground and tiller, fertilzer etc.. and ready to plant in March. It's 2 months away..
Beautiful garden pictures. It made me wanting to start now. LOL
