Some MORE 'flutterbye' pics ... The Spicebush Swallowtail .. Pic #4
Some of my 'entertainment' ..
Oh yeah!
Both sides match the Red-spotted purple according to my books
My books agree. Red-spotted purple. Easy to ID from these great photos!
It's a Great Fritillary ..
A nice pic echoes, and a most beautiful flower too!!
What is this plant? - mags
That's a humoungous Joe Pye.
Ahh .. I'll have to check it out a lil more then ..
Thanks so much!
Thats really nice echoes. I have to add Joe Pye Weed next year. In fact should have this year.
Thanks for the id Magpye. This Joe Pye is over six feet this year, beside the pond.
Ohh, please .. no thanks are necessary .... seriously ..
For it's been another DGer; 'kennedyh', who has been the exemplary and most reliable resource for me - when I've come to dead-ends using my own book, and especially so when there is some bit of confusion .. !!
Hah, by the time I've managed to find a related website for research - he's already beat me to the punch, and got the correct names posted!! He's been most wonderful and kind in aiding me and many others from what I can tell ...
If there's any clarification and/or further distinction that needs to be made - just hang in here; for he'll find this thread and post any further info .. He's a blessing, for sure!
Yes, magpye, kennedyh is really good at that, isn't he? How do you 'nudge' another DGer to a thread to get their comments?
Nah, imway .. I really don't know .. For I still consider myself a wee babe (newbie) here. I'm not anywhere 'qualified' fer any kinda reference material, or directory assistance either! HEE (only teasin'!)
But, I guess if a body didn't find their way to a particular thread eventually .. guess one could always consider poppin' an email to the person?!? ... Altho' it would seem sort of a 'drastic' step (maybe?) .. but ya never know ...
And if it so happened to be determined that we'd sorta come near to 'overstepping' a drawn line - reckon somebody'd get us straightened out relatively quickly about it .. ya think?
Think that's one of those 'up in the air' questions ...

My thinking exactley! Whats that saying...."great minds think alike," or sumpin like gat.
"You summoned me, and I am here!"
Echoes, I agree with Magpye! Your butterfly is the Great Spangled Fritillary Speyeria cybele, which according to my books ranges from Southern British Columbia to the maritime provinces and South to California, New Mexico and N. Georgia.
Thanks kennedyh
;-)
Your pictures are fantastic! You certainly have an "eye" for taking the best pictures!! Terrific subjects as well.
Hope you enter all your wildlife pictures in DG's annual photo contest. Everyone deserves a chance to "ooouuu and aaahhhh" over them! :~)
Thank you so much Shirley1md ...
I sincerely believe that what accounts for any of my pics being even half-decent, is just being so blessed in having some dandy and wonderful lil subjects right here near our front porch! Now, they haint always 'willin', mindja .. but, neither could I ever qualify for the most patient person either! .. hee hee ..
Magpye, excellent collection of more wildlife pics. Your entertainment is our entertainment !!! I've reached the point of looking forward to seeing your name as starting a new thread or replying to an existing one. By the way, is there a story behind selecting "Magpye" as your stage name ???
Also, I just left a little thank-you note for you over on my 'Pileated Woodpecker' thread.
Mighty sweet of ya .. jes mitey sweet ... Thank you, for the kind words.
I'll be sure to take a look-peek at the other post you've mentioned too.
LoL .. Ahhh .. C'mon now, linth ..
Ya haint been able to derive the slightest of clues, as to why 'Magpye', 'ey? heehee
Had intended to use 'Bitty' .. but see'ins as somebody'd already staked claim to a similar
name .. I opted for 'magpye'. It's kinda stuck now. ha! Altho' the name may imply I'm a 'talker' .. it's also just a shortened 'Maggie'. If memory serves me right, I do believe I'd just finished a slice of blackberry pie, too - the day I decided to take the plunge, head first, here! Hmmm, splains a lot don't it! .. LOL ..
Now, that would surely be a nice little conversation ditty to give a 'kick-start' to tho' - - starting a new thread somewhere .. as an invite for all to tell how each of us derived our user names here @ DG!! Understandably, some folks wouldn't particularly care fer it .. and with others, it's just hard to explain some of them. Numbers generally don't tell much of tale, you know .. and there again, sometimes it's a 'personal' thing too! And, with a few others .. wellll, they just seem pretty self-explanatory. heee
(Hmmm, ya reckon someone's done 'been there-done that' .. 'ages' ago, already? BUT, even if it had already - just seems to make sense, that it should be in need of some proper updating! For the proverbial swarms of us '1 year olds, and unders' .. to be rightfully included !! .. heehee ..

:-)
Yes, it is kennedyh .. very much so! I truly enjoy all of us
sharing our pics of our critters, vermin, and 'bugs' of all sorts!
.. Hee ..
Those last few pics ^ there .. are from last Fall, during October.
And I was using my older Fuji digital, the S602 .. that bit the dust,
thru our U S Postal Service. ahh, such memories ..
I've noticed a good many of the butterflies I'm seeing lately in/about
the yard .. their wings are lookin' so tattered and torn ... and acting
so exhausted .. It bothers me, seeing them lookin' so helpless.
Geez .. both of those 'undersides' pics of 'painted ladies' .. look like the American, doesn't it ?
My eyesight is not what it should be .. so, I'm gonna continue to sortee depend on you folks to 'steer' my bull-headed self .. in the right direction .. if, ya don't mind much .. that is!

Mine still seem "frisky." If you know what I mean! Courting? Does that fit in with their life cycle? We don't usually get our first frost till Nov 1.
.. yep, I'm still seeing the Red Spotted Purples and a few of Sulphurs 'twitter-patin' about .. but, on the whole .. they're lookin' just awful. And, yep .. of course, all of it does go 'hand-in-hand' .. with the life cycles. Just hate to see the endings .. 'end', this way ...
I could just swear to goodness, that even our grass is slowing down in growth tho' .. and 'seems' a mite bit early .. for that, even. I dunno .. just got a feelin' that we may have a much earlier fall than normal, along with one whompus-kitty winter knockin' on its back door, too ...
Our grass starts growing again with the cooler weather fall brings. I don't have to mow much during summer at all but, spring & fall are a different story.
Imway and CBernard ... Just an updated inquiry for you folks ...
.. Have either of you gotten yourself a digital camera yet .. ??
Ref: in July you each had mentioned your desires to do so soon .. so, I am merely
being curious, and wanted to follow up with an inquiry to the both of you .. hee ..
Hope yall had a wonderful Turkey Day !!

Yes, I did. Got a Canon S1 IS. Still playing with it and am not happy with my progress. Fortunitely I am not inclined towards giving up. :-)
One down, and one to go .. (hee)
GOOD for you Imway!! ... Have you had it long? .. or, have I completely been missing any of your posts with some of your pitters ? (or, is it jes my 'sometimers' has really kicked in, good, tonite ? .. hee
- Magpye
Yeah, we talked about it some time ago. Posted a couple but, just documentation stuff. There aren't many garden subjects right now but, I'll find somethin' one of these days.
