I garden on long island and have a row of these doing nicely in their second year. Do these often lose branches and leaves inside the bush while the new growth on top is lush and green? the plants are on the north side of a six foot cedar fence beneath the edge of an oak trees shade and the dying branches were mostly on that side of the plant.
i inspected the roots and discovered compaction and dryness underneath and amended with extra peat moss, compost and sand to loosen things up down there as well as some extra bone meal to boot.
