Vellozia seedlings

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi all, this is my first post to this forum, since I couldn't find one more appropriate... a forum for something dry and yet not xeriscaping dry, and yet not succulent or cactus either, would probably have been more appropriate, but tropical still applies, I think:-) Anyway, here goes.

Back at the first part of the month I got seeds of four Vellozia species (not identified except for the region/area they came from) from a friend in Brazil. I became fascinated with them after a small plant http://plantsdatabase.com/showimage/45613/ I puchased began blooming.

From all that I have read they seem to be a tempermental lot, so I had to share my success with them somewhere:-)

Three of the four have germinated, and pictures of two are below. The third species is just starting to come up, so no pic of it yet. Still waiting for signs of life from the fourth species though...

The first pic is of Vellozia "Minas Gerais purple flw." seedlings.

Is anyone else out there growing Vellozias???

I donīt grow Vellozias. I hear they take years to get rid of that "seedling look", and decades to reach a decent size. I donīt know how long they take to bloom, though.

They grow veeery slowly, and live veeery long. I know a restaurant that acquired an adult specimen. It looks healthy, with long and curved leaves, and ocasional white flowers. The Botanical Garden also has its small collection of adult plants that tolerate very well this sea-level tropical climate.
