Oh yes please Maria! When I was in Ohio in January I saw so many fascinating things that my friends just accepted as every-day stuff. My friends live in a rural area too and I saw little black squirrels for the fist time in my life, as well as red tailed kites sitting in lovely snowy settings in trees beside the freeways. Our cultures are so similar and yet so different...if you can understand my meaning? I was in awe when I saw houses with huge icicles hanging from the rafters (something we don't often see over here) and your Christmas and Halloween decorations are something incredible. I love the way you decorate your houses on the outside at Christmas time, and how every other house has your 'Old Glory' flag flying outside. I love the USA and the people over there and can't wait to come back for another visit.
Terri1948
Would I be...........?
I had to laugh, Terry, when you mentioned 'Old Glory'. We always have on on display but last winter a storm broke the pole that is attached to the Garage. My husband was kind of upset, NO FLAG ! Next Day, our daughter showed up with a very small one trying to make her Dad happy, Guess what it is still there!
This are the looks of our country side. I'll look around to see what else may interest you. Maria
Thank you for posting those pictures Maria!
The one of the flag brought back some very happy memories and I wish I had a back porch like yours. Come to think of it...I wish I had all that land too, just think of the irises that I would be able to grow, ha ha.
I took this picture yesterday, it's an old tractor that stands outside a folk museum at Hutton Le Hole (the village I posted pictures of).
Hi..I was 'nt thinking for a round up just now...something to plan ahead and save some money for it..well if anyone comes I 'll try to visit you next year Philomel ! I love to see your new home and I admire your and yours courage to make such a big step. Hmmm....maybe it's better to make a new thread for the round up.
Weather is just great these days...lots of sunshine..Sueone could you already take a swim in your pool...?? I was thinking about that..it was you who 's bought a pool and wondering if the summer would come back because of that fact?
Nice pics Aria !
It would be great to see you if you can come some time saya
I'll start a thread when we've settled in a little more and see who's interested :)
Yes, pics of your pool please sue ;)
Thanks for all your pics Terri and aria - fascinating
I wonder how old that tractor is, Terry, is it always there or just now?
We had a gentle rain last evening while the sun was shining. I knew there would be a rainbow! I took a picture from my front yard. It spanned from north to south in the eastern sky. I wish I had a camera with a panoramic viewer so one could see all of it.
Thanks, Philomel and Saya, for your comments, as the leaves turn, the foliage in the fall will be truly beautiful .
beautiful picture Aria, I love rainbows they're so magical. I always used to wonder about the pot of gold at the end.
Everyone's blaming me for buying this pool, ever since we've had it weathers been dodgy, though I have to say that even I've used it a few times.
I wallow around sat in rubber ring , bliss, must buy one of those chairy things with a drinks holder that floats.
Much to my daughters amusement, my bum got stuck in the ring last week ,stood up with this thing wedged on my derrier, took a few tugs to release it. Something that she tells everyone with much glee.
Still, at least with all this rain ,I'm not having to do much watering.
We had a bar-b-q yesterday, kids were swimming in the rain while we sat in the gazebo. Then when the adults sat down to eat some were sat under one of those put up fabric gazebos, and the less hardy were sat in the sun-lounge, with water pouring down everywhere.
British summer...huh...
What happened to global warming? Not that it's cold , just over-cast and muky.
Ah, so familiar LOL
You'll be interested to know that guests were swimming in the rain here yesterday - lovely and warm, but WET
The last 5 days or so we've had thundery rain - and some dramatic storms, but nothing compared to the reports I've seen in the paper of the flooded underground etc in the UK!
It's still so beautiful anyway, with the views of the lightning playing along the peaks of the Pyrenees
Haha..Sueone I can picture you with this rubber ring...so if I've understand well...this ring fits in a picture with or without sun...floading in and out the pool (with all that rain you have) LOL
Here in Holland we have a heat wave with temps over 30 C Todays temp in my garden is 36 C...soo a pool would we welcome. For the past three weeks no drop of rain fell down, so my garden is becoming bonedry. The changings I've made to get a garden that's more drought resistant show their results now. The most is still looking good without watering.
I only have to water my potplants. But since I've planted them in cocopeat and gave them a mulch too...less watering also.
Hi Aria...I love rainbows too..it's always fascinating..I'll look untill it fades...I stop people, children and point at it...look a rainbow, how beautifull !
Saya, we'll send you some of our rain.
I,m beginning to think that I won't believe things that they write in mags and papaers anymore.
A few years ago they were banging on about how we have to adapt our gardens to drought as this is what we'rre going to get from now on..oh yeah?....
then we're told about our winters getting wetter, well , I suppose that part is true anyway.
then last year they told us that we would be getting heat-waves as a common occourance (which is why I bought the pool! )and.....I'm still waiting!
Saya, you seem to have got it right though, nothing worse than watching all your plants gasping and flagging in the heat.
I bet those storms must look incredible philomel over the mountains, so primeval. I can just remember flying over the pyrenees, stunning.
How are you Terry? I know the pictures I sent are not very exciting but this is what most of our town looks like, I'll try to find better ones. Maria
A lot better than living among concrete in a big town!!! What are those trees at the side of the road Maria?
They are Maple trees, Northener, I will take some pictures of them in the fall, their leaves will be red as can be with some yellow and green Pines inbetween.
People will visit New England from all over the country to see the colours especially in the North where it is mountainous. It truly is a pretty sight, it makes one think of Persian carpets or a Rambrandt pallet.
How have you been? I hope your health is improving and that your neighbor isn't a bother to you anymore about your garden.
Hugs, Maria
Oh! I'd love to see maples!!!! I look forward to their colours in your photo.
I haven't seen my neighbour since that weekend. I've been out mostly - I tend to use the computers at uni. I've chopped back some of the weeds when I've got in during the evening. Only half an hour or so each day, but enough to show willing. Of course, you can't see what I've done from her house, so she probably doesn't realise. Amyway, I've just kept out of her way.
I'm reasonably okay, but still pretty stressed. I'm at a demanding part of my course now, writing up my report. It's 12,000 words, done about 10,00o so far, but need to do some revision in a couple of sections. As long as I finish this writing, including revisions, I think I'll pass. Just don't have any slack - not time to spare.
Once I've finished I'll feel a lot more relaxed.

Hi everyone!
Forgive me for not posting for a few days. Things sometimes get a bit hectic around here (I won't bore you with details). I am around and will check in again later when I have a bit more time to spare. Maria, the pictures are wonderful and brought back so many happy memories. Thank you for posting them. I'll have to scan some more of my old photographs and let you see some pictures of York soon, but will open a new thread when I do that as this one's getting a bit long now.
Sue, I haven't forgotten your grass seeds either, just been waiting for things to calm down a bit and for a couple of them to come into seed. I will get those off to you in the next few days.
Many years ago when we were living in Florida I was flying up to New York airport[on my way to the UK] and the view from the plane all the way up the east coast with the maple trees in full colour was like a persian carpet...I had never seen anything so beautiful it stretched for miles and miles, a sight you have to see to believe...[ these were the days when you had to change planes everytime you left the USA]
I thought Terri might be interested in Cape Foulweather named by Captain Cook on the coast of Oregan, right beside the land we had..it is the most georgous spot [ this is a wonderful country]..Capt. Cook was on his way back from Hawaii..weather is treacherous on tht part of the coast and he was in such a terible storm...hence the name.. On the very highest point {Cape Foulweather] there is a piece of land which juts out..there is a gift shop there, literally hugging the rocks..the first time we were up there ..the winds were gale force and we could hardly move an inch..it was incredible...
Loved reading everyones messages, I worked for a travel agent in the UK and got to know so many places and visited them too, so it is lovely hearing about them as I recognise them all so well..also coming from the N.East coast I am so familiar with Whitby and Yorkshire [where my grandmother was from] It does bring back good memories too of bus trips when I was young with my mom. One thing about getting older is that we realise how much we had...and that was the good days, and the best of times.
Peterson89, Welcome to Dave's Garden - be sure to go to Welcome Mat forum and introduce yourself. You're in Frogsrus territory for one. Are you really as brand new as today??? Naah couldn't be
I love that we have threads going all over the world. And how much we are alike for all the differences.
Keep posting folks, I love seeing your homes and countrysides. Thnx ~Blooms
Welcome, Peterson 89, You will love it at DG. Many wonderful
people are members, the become your friends as they have to me.
I am paticularly fond of the European forum, perhaps it is because i am from there.
I hope you will show some pictures from the area where you live on this thread, some Europeans have not seen everything in the US, of course that includes many Americans too.
So, hello again,
Maria
Thank you Maria and Blooms for your kind welcome...yes, I am new in a way..been aware of the website for some time just never realised the UK connection until the weekend and spent so much time reading ALL the letters and looking at the pictures that I never got anything done...like getting my new plumerias and water lillies planted...oh well...but I did enjoy so much took many trips down memory lane...
What I did forget to ask Northerner and Terri is regarding a program I watched about a year ago.. the large public garden [botanical] in I believe Queensland, Australia was showing Captain James Cooks cottage..it had been purchased from his home town in England and had been catalogued and each stone marked so that it could be then re-built in the Australian public garden...I was in disbelief...how could this happen...do you have any info on it...if this is true then shame on somebody....that is a national treasure...I may be standing on someones toes here and do not mean to but my hubby made the comment after seeing the lovely photos submitted by Terri of the lone cross..I am sorry to say that if this were standing here it would now be in the legal system and there would be plans to do away with it..I hope that Britain will never give in or take part in losing its heritage and the heritage that is ours...it belongs to each of us...it is usually only a handful of people who assault all of us and usually get away with it...
sorry aria, I gave you an M like me [marion]
I do not concentrate very well when I have constant interuptions [ we are ''retired'']
smile, takes me all my time to remember my own name most days. [ what happened to peace and quiet?] did I hear someone telling me to eat my words??
But my real name is Maria, I prefer to be addressed by my name rather than Aria that is why I sign it, so please do not be sorry
Maria
PS I hope you 'll get acquainted with the Jokes and Chat Forum, it is lots of fun about everthing you can think about. GW started it and is now on thread #13
Hi Peterson and welcome to the European forum, it's good to see you posting in here. I love the story about Cape Foulweather.
Yes, shame to say the cottage Capt. Cook was born in is now standing somewhere in Australia. The place it stood originally now has a small plaque or urn I believe. Just like our old London Bridge now stands somewhere in Arizona (I think I'm right in saying). I have no idea how such things are allowed to happen and was as shocked as you were when I first came to live here and heard about it.
Hi Maria! I'll post more pictures when I have a few minutes to spare...things are a bit hectic around here at the moment, but just popped in to say hello.
Terri1948
Hello and welcome Peterson!
The urn marking the birthplace of Captain Cook is in Marton. It's a village that used to be a mile or two away from the town of Middlesbrough. Of course, it's now simply a suburb on Middlesbrough's outskirts, as the town has grown considerably over the last century. I live in Middlesbrough and am only 2 or 3 miles away from it. It's a shame that we lost it. I don't know if it would be allowed nowadays. I hope not.
Hi Terri, the bridge [London Bridge] I know another big surprise [ whow !!] we went to see it many years ago when it was first ''re-built'' [Lake Havasu] it is on the way to Lake Powell and that is REALLY desert as in scorching..let us not forget the Queen Mary either [ Long Beach, Calif] but she does look happy there and has lovely afternoon teas [I believe you can also stay aboard overnight like B/B] I was quite surprised at how small she is thinking she looked bigger...in pictures..
thanks so much Northerner, this feels like old home week honestly...it is 5-30am and I have not gone to bed yet ???? I know for some is already morning...not to worry I will get over my enthusiasm soon because I will be worn out..... I could not even count on my fingers how many times I have been in Middlesbrough, [would need lots of fingers]
I am indeed walking down memory lane here...
Maria, thanks for mentioning the jokes and chat forum, I really needed a good laugh tonight [ am not a very happy camper right now] tomorrow is exploratory surgery also oral surgery , so really did need a good chuckle and I got one...they are funny !!!!
marion
Good luck for tomorrow, Marion, It is not much fun when things are not right with one's health.
I am glad you enjoyed chats, I LOL many times, some people have such a wonderful sense of humor which I appreciate as it is totally lacking in my make up.
I am off to bed now, god night, Marion
Maria
thanks Maria, good night and sleep tight.
marion
Blooms with a view....Hope you enjoy this one..
Two ducks and a frog were living quite happily in a pond together, when all of a sudden the pond started to dry up...so the ducks said to the frog that they would have to fly away and find another pond..the frog who was very unhappy told them that he could not fly away and he would have to stay behind..so the ducks thought for a while and came up with a good idea..they would hold a piece of stick between their beaks and the frog would hold on tight with its mouth and they would find a new pond..
A farmer on the ground looking up towards the sky saw the ducks flying overhead with the frog holding on to the stick with its mouth..the farmer said ''what a clever idea, I wonder who thought of that'' and the frog shouted ''I DID' !!!!!!
Marion, that little, itty bitty story made me smile!
How are you feeling after your surgery? I hope it was not too bad and you feel OK?
Maria
Dear Maria,
I honestly feel like something the cat dragged in, it has been several real bad days [ what can you say after surgery] ?..I also cannot talk because my mouth is all stitched up including the roof of my mouth [exploratory surgery there] and I still look like a chip-munk with the swelling and bruising. I normally never take drugs but am almost living on them [ right now who cares !!] HOWEVER it will pass and I can chatter on again, it will give my hubby time to enjoy the peace and quiet ...but he does not like it ???? I cannot use the phone...the world is coming to an end
Thank you for your kindness, keep well, marion
ps all the postings have been keeping me going , it is nice to recognise a lot of you...cheers
pps grammas still on the web
Marion, what ever happened to you to have such major work done on your jaw/face? I had no idea, thought it had something to do with your teeth, perhaps that too? How awful, but let it go, it wll pass too.
We have a new forum about people that are caretakers, I am one of them. I don't know if you have read any, it is sad but also very interesting how we cope.
Kimberley (GW) is such a lovely person, she always helps since I am not very computer wise, she is a whiz! Tonight she printed the verse from the Sound of Music about "Maria" I thought that was so sweet..
DH took a fall tonight again, it's so hard for me to lift him because he can't help me or himself, sometimes I have to call for help.
Each day you are going to feel better, have positive thoughts it will help to lessen the pain, I know from my own experience.
Take care and be good to yourself.
Hugs
Maria
Hi Maria,
For people who are not familiar with mercury poisoning or infected root canals...what I have they will not understand...but yes, it was dental, but mercury travelled up into my gums, bone, and sinus caverties with disaterous results, complicating was two root canals which were not taken care of properly and cavitations [ meaning teeth already extracted were not done properly either] many people have these same problems, it is both very painful, and distastorous to your health as it effects all the body, including the brain cells, I used to be a very healthy person a few years ago...Can I say something..[forgive my intrustion] but I smoked years ago and got very sick so had to give it up [ bronchitis] my health improved so much that I was the picture of health until this happened...there were some very strange things showing up on my x-rays so doctors went in for exploratory surgery..I lost a dentist friend last year because of a root canal that became infected..It is very serious even tho I make light of it at times...[ have to keep my humor going I have always had a non serious side..zany at times]
as my mom would often say ''its being so cheerful that keeps me going'' [smile]. hugs back, marion
Marion, did you read my email? And, thank you for yours. I'll talk to you in chat
Maria
I'm so sorry you're going through this Marion. I also had surgery a few years a go. I developed a cyst in my sinuses. Extremely painful. The surgeon went through my gum to open it up and remove the cyst. I'm all right now but I was ill for a very long time.
(((Marion)))))
