Moonflower vine question

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

This is my first year with a moonflower vine..got it at the Fl. swap. I am definately in lust!!! LOL The blooms are so pretty and the scent is wonderful. I actually stood and watched one open..what a treat.

Anyway to my question. I've read that they can be propagated by seed or a cutting from a runner. If I cut a runner should it be rooted in water or just put in dirt? and is there a time that's better to cut a runner? or just whenever?

Hmm- I root my cuttings in water. I have a Hyacinth Vine going now. Never tried a Moonie though.

Yes, Moon Vines are wonderful. For years I grew them from the orginal seed of my Grandpa's wonderful display in KS. A favored memory sitting in the yard on a hot evening and delight in their fragrance and opening show.
I followed his directions on seed planting and never failed. The seeds are very hard, therefore I would nip them with a toenail clipped (allows moisture to penetrate seed to hasten germination) then soak them overnight in warm water. If you leave them in the water a few more days, you will see the seed beginning to grow. But not too long or it will rot. I then sowed them in the bed and we were off and running. Many would seed themselves for the next year. Alais, I made the mistake one year in planting the dreaded Morning Glory, which has taken years of labor to control and am still loosing the battle. Well, so much for my beautiful Moon Vines.
