Black Batflower aka Tacca

Kirbyville, TX(Zone 8b)

I wanted to share some pictures of my Black Batflowers....I love these plants, and have been growing them from seeds, from my mother plant...needless to say I have to repot seedlings. I already transplanted last years babies into 6 and 8 inch pots~ Anyone else grow them?? so many folks think they're hard to grow, and I beg to differ~ Debra~

I allowed mine to die back for the winter, so they are only a few inches right now and no blooms yet this year.

Rylaff do you have your Tacca planted in the yard??

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

RedSD- I have Taccas...two blacks (one huge, one small) and a white. The two blacks are blooming...how do you save the seed, tell when they are ripe, plant them etc. I love Taccas...great faces!!!!

Mine are planted in pots. Last winter I brought them in and treated them like a tuber or rhisome. Now they are back outside and growing again.

I have been wanting to try theses... if you got any extra seeds would love to do a trade

My Tacca are container grown.....my mother plant puts out several seedpods a year. I planted the seeds from last year, no seeds to share sorry~ I have flats of seedlings, and will be trading some off after the weather cools down.
Aloha I also have the Tacca nivea(white batflower), I have 2 of them, they have yet to have a seedpod, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed~ Janet sorry to hear about your white tacca......have you grown the Black?? it seems to be easier to grow~Here's a picture of a ripe seedpod from my Black batflower, they take quite a few months to ripen, and the seeds aren't viable for very long after they ripen....Debra~

Debra, did you pollinate them yourself? I did not get any seed pods last year.

Ocean Springs, MS(Zone 8b)

Debra,
A friend of mine gave me a small black one. I saw your other post on plant trading. I would love to have a bigger one of the black bats. I just knew the white one was going to bounce back, but even though the roots were white, it just never mad a leaf, and then, all of a sudden just shriveled.

I didn't pollinate them myself.....some little critter did it for me, when I wasn't looking...lol, and I'm glad they did. It was probably a lizard, my back atrium area, (where my mother tacca spends the summer), is full of anole (little green lizards)....they run the plants constantly looking for bugs,(such good little lizards!)
Janet I'm sure we can trade for a tacca...you have some goodies I'd love to have!
