OK y'all, I guess I need help:(
Are my browing leaves and lack of blooms due to all the rain we've had?
I have 3 from last year, they get leaves but no flowers, this year 2 of them have branched but no sign of flowers. I've been trying to do the 101 method, fertilizing 2 x a month, does the rain wash it away? How can I keep them in full sun without them getting rained on? How do you Florida Folks do it?
Too much rain for my plummies?
I have bought some plumies from these folk in Florida. Drop them a line and mention my name ( Jan MacKay) and ask them for some advise. I will let them know that you might be writing to them.
Jan
Whoops, I forgot to give you their email addy. I think you should email me and I will give it to you. They are very knowledgeable folks and very kind too.
I just heard back from Steve and Brenda in Florida. They said they would be glad to give you any info you needed on Plumies. She said to just put in the subject line (Friend of Jan's Plumerias) so she doesn't delete it. they have a tropical plant farm there. They sell lots of Plumies.
Here is there email (BLuteran@aol.com)

Thanks Jan, that is very kind of you :)
To me it looks like chemical burn...maybe too much fert? Let us know what the experts say!
They said, too much rain :( When the leaves turn yellow and brown, it's a sign of it. He also said I could cut off the bad leaves. He said the best thing to do with plummies was to neglect them. He only uses MG every other month!
I'll be putting these under the eaves for sun without the rain.
Hi Vi, Mine never blooms until late Sept. or early Oct. I have yellowed leaves and remember my mother saying yellow leaves are a sign of too much water. I think all the rain is getting to them.
Do you have a link to the website that you purchased your plumeria from??
Here in So Cal our Plumeria bloom most of the warmer months... I have to say, in 5 years, I can't remember fertilizing them even once, and they look great. Planted in mostly sand so I doubt much nutrition keeps in the soil. Just came back from Hawaii where the plumeria look awesome... rains there even more than in Florida, though there soil is basically lava rock (extremely well draining) so I doubt too much rain is the problem... though too much water staying around the roots could be if your soil isn't sandy or well draining enough. Have to say, though, the plumeria look best on the drier sides of the islands... hmmm. Still, some of the wettest places on earth are in Hawaii.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice, it it does't bloom this year...I will probably give up :(
J_vino, I got mine thru a co-op here--for all we know we have the hardest to bloom varieties, they were just labled white, yellow, pink :(
If I remember correctly, a bunch of folks were very happy with this company, http://www.floridacolors.com/ but you should ask folks on your side of the world. I'm quite sure you can order direct from Hawaii!
Violabird, just use more sand in your mix. My friend Mel in TN has bunches and they bloom for her. She grows hers in pots so she can move them in when frost comes.
I have to agree with PalmBob. I water every day, and I have 12 out of 16 of my plumerias blooming, but my plumerias are planted in cactus mix mixed with sand and drainage is very good. If your potting soil mix is not super well-draining, then as Bob said, the mix could be staying too wet. I fertilize once in a while when I remember, about once a month.
I'm sure I potted them however the Plumeria 101 site said to do it. I imagine I'll need to wait till next spring to repot ?
Does anyone have any thoughts on if 1 gallon pots are correct?
I have mine in 1 or 2 gallon pots- nothing too big or special. Around late Juneish, around when this thread started, I decided to take my plumerias out of their pots and harass their roots, cleaning the old dirt and adding new soil. They have started to show inflo's and have bloomed within the past week. I think I fertilized about 4 times this summer.
But also in the last week mine have started to show those brown dry spots-- but I assumed it's because the small pots had tipped over and started leaf rot on the ground. Is it possible that happened for you? I've had mine for 3 years and this is the first year all 3 of them bloomed. I water mine every day, in regular soil-- cheap soil at that. Although... it is very dry here, which I assume it is where Clare is too. Try watering every other day, in full sun. --- Since school has started for me, I have neglected my plumerias and all 3 have bloomed beautifully.
Vi, I have most of mine in three- and five-gallon containers. When I'm rooting cuttings, I root them in one-gallon containers and then eventually repot them to three- or five-gallon containers. Art_n_Garden is right that it is very dry here. You might need to water less unless your plumeria is rootbound and is drying out quickly.
Art_n_Garden, the brown spots could be fertilizer burn or sun burn. Sometimes the leaves can burn in super high temperatures, especially with low humidity.
This is an old picture, but it shows the size of the plumerias in their five-gallon containers. You just want the container to be slightly larger than the rootball, and if you have good-draining soil, then you don't have to worry about root rot or overwatering.
