Ocre new

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Finally a bloom for me. I was starting to think I wouldn't see blooms til October! This is New Ocre.... not the real Ocre but I assume one of it's offspring.

It seemed to hold it's fragrance through the daytime hours. I put some Rothkirch pollen on her.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Sue it looks great
is the color the same as the original Ocre?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Beautiful color, Sue.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

CC, I don't have the original Ocre to compare. I'm not positive but I thought this was bred by Dr Preissel to replace Ocre ... which is supposed to be disease prone. There are a couple of Ocre replacements out. I would think the color would be comparable. This is the one that Native Habitat carries. I got it from Alice last year. I was a little worried when I brought it out this spring cuz the foliage looked awful. It seems to be doing a lot better now.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Dang! Don't know how to remove the pic?

I am partial to the yellows & oranges. I have a few seedlings that "should" be orange.
Pinks are nice but Yours would be on my wish list!
Very nice, pic & color!
I think I have a couple tiny buds forming on a cutting I rooted.
I hope! I hope! I know what it's like to wait for a bloom!
I still haven't seen my 1st. I have a white Dat that is going to bloom soon. The pic isn't too good, wrong lighting.
But.... I think there are some blossoms forming in there!
Not sure if it's a white or peach. My friend took cuttings off of 2 different bushes. It'll be a real surprise!

So pretty! A newbie question, will I have to bring my brug in for the winter? I live in zone 6, central KY. What should I do?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Yes you will,if you have good light, you may keep them growing inside,if not,you may have to cut them back and give them a dormant period.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You don't even have to cut them back to give them a dormant period. Most people do cut them back leaving six nodes on each branch so you will have places for new growth to start in the spring. I think that is what Doc meant by cutting back. If you cut back to near the soil, it will have to regrow a lot before bloom time. If you put it into dormancy, just give it enough water to keep it alive. It won't be growing much so it won't need a lot of water, maybe a cup or two each month, depending on how big it is and what temp it is in while sleeping. Good luck. I'm sure you will do fine.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I had Ocre original. I had considered her genes to be great contribution to the gene pool, but she is prone to diseases. She went in the garbage bag. I kept Estella instead. She is also a natural hybrid out of the native habitat and not prone to diseases. The color is a nice orange, but not so bright as Ocre.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

It is an eye catching color!!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info! I had been told they are hardy in zone 6. I was planning on bringing it in just to be safe. It is about 3 to 4 feet tall. Should I just pot it up and cut it back to the forks? I have had one yellow bloom and then we had a Wind Storm and it blew it off. :(

Raleigh, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi bluegrass/Teresa! Brugs are definitely not hardy in zone 6. I'm in zone 7b and they barely survive over winter here even with a lot of mulch. I've decided to grow all mine in containers now and garage them in the winter so I don't lose all the top growth to frost. Here's a link from ABADS with some brug winter care advice, I'm sure others can give you more details if you want.

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi Blue grass, I am in 6b and growing them in pots. Our falls can turn into winter overnight! I cut back to the first Y if the plant is touch much for me to handle on my own, but if they are small I try to leave at least 6. I have a few that I have to remove the whole Y, fourteen foot trees are not easy to move in!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks Gals for making it clear,I guess we all get so used to just using terms,I would have hated for someone to take cutting back as going to the ground,I cut back to get them throught the door, like Monika says, laeving about 6 nods.
