I just love it when these bloom. They are so fragarent.
I thought I lost all the yellow ones ( var. African Queen) but some still came up.
Chinese Trumpet lily
I like yellow lilies because they are so bright and sunny looking.
Lovely! Looks like I must get some yellow this fall.
Lilyfan, you seem to be very knowledgable about these lilies. I bought this as African Queen several years ago. Do they change over time? It was one of the original bulbs. I noticed one on the Lily lovers forum labeled African Queen that was much darker. Mine have very little of the maroon shading on the back of the flowers.
Not super knowledgeable, but I believe African Queen should tend to the orange range and have the maroon reverse. Oh where is iowaron when we need him?
se_eds, been thinking about this for awhile now. I think African Queen might be a strain. There is some variation in bulbs of a strain.
Here is what the North American Lily Society says about a strain: STRAIN (or GREX)... A group of lilies which resemble each other... have the same or similar parents... but are produced from seed instead of vegetatively (CLONE). Example: Amber Glod is a clone (abbr. cl.), Citronella is a strain (abbr. g.) In some strains the crossing is so controlled that the progeny appear to be of a single clone.
Here is a photo of another bulb of African Queen and it has blooms much yellower than my other. It is also about 1 1/2 weeks behind in blooming.
Yes that one more closely resembles the other picture I saw.
Like you said, it may have been a seed. I had ordered 50 of these trumpet lillies from an importer - Engle--- something or other about 10 years ago. I have a lot more lilies ready to bloom soon, but do not know their types. Will post pics if I am able. Thanks again for your help.
Don't let lilyfan fool you--she knows her lilies!
