Here is what the North American Lily Society says about a strain: STRAIN (or GREX)... A group of lilies which resemble each other... have the same or similar parents... but are produced from seed instead of vegetatively (CLONE). Example: Amber Glod is a clone (abbr. cl.), Citronella is a strain (abbr. g.) In some strains the crossing is so controlled that the progeny appear to be of a single clone.

Here is a photo of another bulb of African Queen and it has blooms much yellower than my other. It is also about 1 1/2 weeks behind in blooming.
