Rain, Rain, go away!!!!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Gosh Ada, I am so sorry. Your gardens were so pretty. I sure hope the weather clears up soon. We was having the same type of weather every single day. Now I have a feeling it is going to be dry. Everyone's weather has been so strange this year. Will help however I can.

Thanks, waterloolily. I'm not too worried about my big Brugs. I know I can always replace these oldies but goodies but my seedlings are what I'm losing to rain and frogs/toads. I took them out of the rain into the garage but the toads root them out. LOL I think I'm fighting a losing battle. I had sat a hanging basket in the garage and today, the soil in it looked like a huge doodle bug hill where the toads had dug down and buried themselves in it.

Ada, why not try some hardware cloth? I had trouble with the durn chipmunks digging, so I cut some round pieces with a slit in them to go around the stem. Worked for me, of course, after a while I got lazy and just cut squares ;>P

Vi, what is hardware cloth? I don't think anything will keep these frigs/toads out. LOL

It will Ada, hardware cloth is a heavier and denser type of window screen material. Chicken wire might work as well, if they can't dig, they will go elsewhere!

Chicken wire definately won't keep these toads out. They can go straight thru the holes. They're not that big but very destructive.

Hardware cloth is as tight as screen wire but a lot stiffer, you can bend it over the sides of your pots to secure it. There is also a smaller holed chicken wire they put out.

Vi, this is ( wire mesh ) hardware cloth . The holes are about 1/2 in. The wire is stiff enough to form over the flower pots edge . Or you could cut a circle that will just fit inside the pot's rim , this would look better.

I really sympathize with you people who are being flooded with all the rain. Just the opposite here, I spend every minute I am outside irrigating. It is so dry here and i don't have enough water, since my new well produces practically no water. Never heard of frogs and toads causing such a problem. Again I'm sorry you all are having such a problem. Donna

Donna, I've never seen the frogs/toads do this either but they are sure playing havoc with my plants. We've had down pours again today. The weather man is calling for rains thru next week. We sure need a break from rain for awhile.
