Summer!!! and I'm going to enyoy all 48 hours of it.
Finally!
congratulations....the wait has been worth it! We're havin' a heat wave out West!
Here too - the air felt like summer all night.
It's been cooler than usual here.
I even put the heat on again a couple of days this week just to take the chill off.
Your columbine is lovely Echoes..mine are finished now but here is a photo.
The tall purple ones are McKana Giants..I don't really like them too tall and floppy..and the white are short called Beirdermeir I think.
Thank goodness some flowers like the cool temps. Tulips were late but lasted a long time. Your purple columbine is really nice. It dosen't look floppy.
It's really fun to see what the volunteers will look like after a few years of growing different varieties.
LOLOL echoes! You are a hoot and I am glad ya'll are finally having some summer!
Thanks Echoes..they are standing up in that photo..but after some of our rains and winds they were knocked over.
Ladies your columbines are lovely...they are one of my favorite plants and not one is in my garden. I'll have to rectify that this summer.
keep em coming!!! ( & thank you for the names)!!
mixed breed vounteer.
Thanks weeds, we really deserve summer by now. I had to come in out of the heat. Tomorrow will be a different story probably. Cooler and thunderstorms.
forgot my pic
summer over temporarily. Rain last night and today; looks like an inch to 2. First cut of hay is off and in the shed - alleluiah. This will give a great start to the second cut. Even though the spring was very cool, crops seem to be ahead of last year. Canola is about 50% bloom where as last year there was no bloom on July 1. Hay in the shed on the 30th of June hasn't happened for years. Last year is was the end of July before the first cut was in the shed and the year before it never did get in the shed. Must have been that 2 to 3 inches of rain we got after making the sacrifice to the rain god (shaved my head I did LOL)
Lynn....I wanna see a pic of you!! ;)
Hard to believe the hay has come off this soon...today there is a real chill to the air (I'll be watching the overnight temps AGAIN). :(
Your horse is lovely Lynn but looks a wee bit tired of all the rain. When is due? We want lots of pics then!
Looks like your garden has a good supply of manure. :) Are the fences from shelving units?
Carol I was just telling DH we should make an island in the front yard grass for land lubbing lilies...after seeing your pic I'll plant some columbines there as well. :)
Sounds like a great plan......
the panels are display panels very heavy gauge that the Bay here declared surplus; my plant buddy Anne works there and arranged for me to buy the whole works for 20 dollars. I think there were 30+ panels. Someday I may find a way to turn them into a greenhouse frame or something. Anyway I contructed the "playpen" then lined it with HEAVY pond liner around the sides and about 6 inches of bottom. Then filled it with equal parts compost sand and vermiculite. Seems to work well and expanded my small veggie garden by half. Also gets more sun than the part next to the barn.
Her due date is the 8th but she is waxed up heavily this am and moving around much more than usual; also quite a bit of tail switching that is not bug related. Vulva has relaxed substantially and there is a little discharge - perhaps this is too much information. You can bet there will be baby pictures real soon after birth.
:D Yippeeeeeeee!!!
:D Smiling here at the description. Leaves no doubt in my mind what's going to happen, soon. Yes, baby pictures would be great! What about birthing photos too. I saw a calf birth, had to be winched out. Not my idea of fun. All were OK after. Are horse births easier?
Linda (country girl wanna be)
What a great deal you got!
I will look forward to seeing your new "baby"
Yes horses are easier. Very rare to ever help a mare foal. Mine foaled at 2:30 this morning. She started labour at 1:45. Sorry no birthing photos as it was pretty dark and cold and windy and I had other things on my mind. Did take a few after we moved them into the arena but won't post just yet. A silly feeling - the foal (a colt) has some problems. His muscles and tendons in the front legs/forearm are so tight he is unable to stand and lock his knees to support his weight. Therefore unable to nurse. Have been milking the mare every 90 minutes to 2 hours and feeding the little guy. He is strong and tries to stand but collapses after 10 or 15 seconds. It just takes too much energy. If there is not dramatic improvement by tomorrow am I will load momma and son and take them to the vet clinic where we might consider splinting. Say a prayer or two for the little guy.
Will do....sorry to hear, hope things go better by tomorrow.
Been keeping up with this and will think about this baby and wish him well.
Oh Lynn I hope all goes well for the little one. I saw this at work at closing time and have everyone sending best wishes your way!
Will most definately ask/send prayers for the young foal. I'm sure it's a big worry. Hope you too will get some much needed rest.
Our 14 yr old collie/lab cross had her melanoma removed from her mouth today. She lost some blood, and is still a bit doopy, but over all, doing very well.
Linda
Lynn, how is that little colt doing? Did you make out OK in that storm?
Put the little guy down this a.m. He stopped taking milk about 1:30 this morning and looked like his bowel was blocked. There just wasn't any point in trying anymore and for the first time he looked like he was in pain. The body went to the provincial lab for a post mortem just in case there was any condition that could be identified as genetic. Now I have to decide whether to take the chance on breeding that mare again. Will wait for the results of the blood work and autopsy.
Oh Lynn, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I can only imagine how long and stressful these past few days have been. It's always so hard to put any animal down. I agree that waiting for the results of all the tests, would be wise before trying breed that mare again, just in case it was a genetic problem.
My heart goes out to you. Big hugs from Victoria.
Linda
Such a heartbreak. (((Hugs)))

Sorry to hear about your colt. It must have been a trying time for you.
Sorry to hear things went that way Lynn.
That makes me sad, poor baby.
It is a treasure! I'm so sorry Lynn ... losing little ones is so hard.
Wonderful photo. Still breaks my heart to think of him. I'm such a wuss. I can deal with sick & dying people, (it's my job) but animals always get to me.
Linda
PS. I heard about more severe weather your way, Baseball sized hail, and toronados, Edmonton too. Wish you guys had our weather, and we got some rain.
Just what we need.
