Propagation by ignorance, multiple seeds, and patience:
During the Philadelphia Flower Show (some time in March) I stopped by the Reading Terminal market and bought a bag of Medjool dates. Having eaten the dates, I laid the pits on their sides in three pots of moist peat soil, coverered by about 1 inch of moist peat moss, and sealed the pots in plastic bags. A week ago I had a date palm seedling poking up. I took the pot out of the bag, and the seedling is growing.
So far this is the only seedling to come from a couple of dozen date pits. I hope it makes a nice house plant.
Medjool Date
You should get at least 50% eventual germination. A good washing in warm water might make the rest of the pits germinate quicker. Palm seeds like it really warm to germinate, so putting them in the sun won't hurt...
I do this once a year for the fun of it, but the climate here isn't great for palms, and I don't seem too good on the aftercare of potted palm seedlings...
