David, your description of this summer does not fit my area of our zone - we have had wall to wall rain for almost two months, I cannot remember how long it's been since we've gotten a 24 hour break from the rain. And, of course, I hate to whine because I know I'll be begging for rain before very long. I'll look forward to hearing which brugs don't do well in your area, it will be a great help, so I concentrate of the ones that do well. In the meantime, I hope you are feeling better and that you have a swift and complete recovery. Bronchitis is tricky and will flare right back up, if you don't get completely over it, so take it as easy as you can!!! Wishing you well and thank you so much for your interest!!! SherryLike

Sherry,
Here is a list of the 43 brug varieties that I had planted directly in the ground this past growing season. I am by far no expert on giving information on how ,where, when and why to grow them.I am only sharing my growing experience here with the following brugs and just because they did not come back for me in zone8a S.C. doesn't mean that they may not come back for you.

All of the names listed below grew extremely well for me during the spring and summer last year. I even had a few like Dr D. that is a versicolor to come back and they from what i've heard don't like temps below 50 and we had many nights this past winter to go below 20F.
Some that I thought would come back didn't and some I thought wouldn't come back did,so all I can tell you is this is how it worked out for me.

David, you are just the nicest person ever, and oh how sincerely I appreciate your taking the time to share your experience. I am going to do the same thing and hopefully next year I can share the info with an interested newbie, especially one in zone 8a. At this time, I only have about 25 brugs, not counting my seedlings and cuttings, so I expect to have around 40 at the end of the season. As soon as this rain passes, I'm going to put more of my recently purchased brugs in the ground. It is quite obvious, to me, that in my area, that the brugs in the ground do much better. And, when the rain ends, I will be potting up some cuttings that I hope will make trees - those I will winter inside.

I'm most disappointed that Antique Lace (Course I just fell in love with that one today!) and Pink Beauty and Tiara didn't make it, so I will pay special attention and maybe add extra mulch for them and hope for the best. And, I'm delighted that except for those two, you have one of just about everyone I have, so hopefully, I'll be in good shape!! Rosamond, so far, is my fav, so I will cheat with her and take one in, leave one out.

Shirley advised me regarding my choices and what might grow in my area and it looks like she is correct, considering your good luck with the same ones. I hope all you guys, that give so much of your time to help and encourage the newbies, brug class of 2004, know how much we appreciate you and your down to earth way of working and encouraging us. Your Y and N list has been copied and added to my
list of brug info. Thank you so much, you are a real sweetie, a keeper, I love being in zone 8a with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SherryLike

Shirley and David are just two of the best. I think the world of both of them. There are just so many nice, giving people that share on this thread that it never ceases to amaze me.

First of all, "Rosenquartz" is a beau-ti-ful pink Brug with lovely long tendrils. Is it fragrant too?

I'm overwhelmed by your list of Brugs! What an incredible collection you have! You are very lucky that you can over-winter your Brugs outside and the majority of them will come back! Just curious, the Brugs that didn't survive the winter, were they the same age and had the same amount of growth as the ones that did survive???? OR did a certain species of Brug fair better in zone 8a over the winter than another? Do I dare try this in zone 7a???

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Shirley1md,
All of those brugs were planted in the ground at the same time and all ranged from 10-12 in height when planted. They had all reached about the same height also when I had to cut them in November to prep for frost.

As for rosenquartz being fragrant or not,I really haven't checked but i'll go outside and do it right now. I know someof them don't release a fragrancec at all. Rosamond was one that I had that has no smell.

Foley, AL

catsmeow, were the ones you planted? that did not come back protected from the north wind?

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

elyearcrazy,
you can call me stupid if you want to but i've lived in the same location for 22 years and would you believe I have no idea as to the direction I live in. I know when I drive down to the main road it runs north and south, but after you twist and turn your way back into where i'm at you kinda loose your since of direction!!
I'll have to get a compass or weather vane and put out in my yard so i'll know where I live.

David
Look up at the sun
rises in the east
sets in the west
which ever side up your house has the sun most of the day is probably south

but if you're working 60 hours a week
(and I know whats that's like)
Chances are you don't get to see the suns movements except at work

David, I sure hope these meds clear up the bronchitis . It can be so hard on you when it's hot weather. As far as the long hours, I know how that can be. When I worked there were lots of weeks that I worked 75 hours but I loved the pay. LOL I got double time for the last four hours on Saturday and all day on Sunday. Uncle Sam liked it anyway. LOL

My dog, Princess, has bronchitis. I didn't know dogs got it. I had to take her to the vet and he said it was compable to whooping cough in humans. I called what she was doing heavy snorting. LOL He said she was coughing deeply. I know it was really rough on her because she pants so hard afterwards. She's on two antibiotics and cortisone.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

After going tot he new Dr monday morning and getting all new meds,I feel fine. I got my first good nights sleep since the 17th monday night. The cough syrup I have has codeine in it and he prescribed and inhaler becuase I couldn't breath at night. Since i've been taking those 2 I feel about 98%better and don't cough or have trouble breathing at night.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

That's good news, David, I'm glad you are on the mend!!! My grand has asthma that turns into bronchitis and it has completely cleared up with the inhaler...hope it works as well for you!!! SherryLike

Sure glad to hear you are feeling much better, David.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm sure glad you are better and hope you don't ever have to go through it again. Colds and flu bugs can really take the vim and vigor out of us.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

David, I'm so glad to hear you're feeling much better and I hope you're completely over it soon.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

That is good news David. Hope you are all over it soon!
