Is this a Y????

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I don't think that will be a problem. LOL! So, you are leaving the place behind that has all the air potatoes? Mine did so well, but this year again, no potatoes. I'm going to give up on it and move on to something more colorful. I've sure enjoyed them though.

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Yes I left Florida in Feb and left DH behind to get things packed up to move. I went to work for my son-in-law at New Dominion Pictures in the Wardrobe Department. I worked until the end of May and decided that was not for me. Those actors lie about their size and then you have to do the sizing all over again in the drop of a hat. LOL. I am not working the time being and just going to wait until after we get in our new place in Corapeake NC.
Did you save potatoes from your first ones and replant them. It might have been too cold there for them to come back again.
How many days does it take for the Brug to completely open when you see it first start opening?

I had some great potatoes the first year, but the second year they didn't get very big. God some more starts from a guy in Florida for this year.

As for the blooms, once you see the tendrils, it will be just a few days before it opens. It will look yellow at first and then go to the color it is going to be. Could still be yellow though, no matter what. Will be fun watching this one progress.

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

It does look yellow right now as for as I can see. It started opening up today but not a whole lot. It seems like I remember something on one of the threads about someone had one that didn't open up much. I sure hope mine opens up really big.
Well I guess I had better get to bed and rest my back.

Well here is the first bloom. It was opened up yesterday but did not have my camera so had to run to my daughters to get it. We had what was left of hurricane Charley headed this way so I rushed to Norfolk to get my camera but got delayed by my grandson. LOL. By the time I got back it had closed up. Took a picture anyway. But this morning it is trying to open again. So here are the pictures. I took some pictures of my daughters which has a lot more blooms than my does. They look the same and was bought at the same nursery.

Ok here is a picture of the brug opening up the second time. Is that normal for it to open up again. We had to put it in the garage over night because of the storm yesterday.

Yes that is normal,a good bloomer will open for a few days, this one looks great, looks like it could be Isabella to me,she is a good bloomer,be sure to give it a sniff at dusk.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

She looks great Sami. I'm so glad you finally have a brug bloom. Does she smell good at night? Boy, just wait until you have a yard full of them.

My BIL and SIL live in Hamptom and he called this morning to say that the high tide water was almost up to his sunroom and they had over seven inches of rain. Hope everything survived for your family.

Looks great Sami!

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Thanks Rootdoctor I will give it a good sniff at dusk tonight. Is that the only time it puts out the aroma? So you think that could be an Isabella? How can I be for sure? It is pink on the outer edges but kind of white inside.

Thanks Shelly I am so pleased even though I don't have a whole lot of blooms on it.

Brugie we just got a lot of wind and rain. But a tornada was sited here but I didn't see or hear it. This old place survived the hurricane last year. We weren't here but my son was and he said he was wondering there for a while. We last a lot of trees from the hurricane last year but nothing this year. This rain has just added more time that it is going to take to finish our other place. Sure was hoping to get in there by the end of this month. That way would still have some planting time left for this year.

I didn't try to smell the brug last night because I guess I forgot that it only puts out the aroma in the evening. Will do that tonight. Oh forgot have to go stay with our daughter tonight to help with the grandbaby but hers is just like might and she has blooms on hers so will take a sniff of hers. LOL
well gotta go can't sit very long because of back.

Here is a pic of the other bloom opening up. It is on the same plant but it is white. I am a newbie so wondering if it will change to the frosty pink color around the edges later.

Before you go to bed, it will be colored. It doesn't take them long. She is a pretty one.

Thanks Shirley
Think of me for next year if you have any cuttings. I would like to start different ones. Now let me get this straight before the frost I should cut this back clear to the bottom of the pot, and where do I get the cuttings from it. It is so stalky. Can I get several cuttings from the stalks?
I want to be able to get this one started again next year even though it doesn't have a name. I still think it is pretty.

Sami....they are beautiful...makes me wish I hadn't QUIT! Oh Well...I'll try to hit your house when the Brugs are in blooms....LOL Jo

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You can take cuttings from any place on the plant. Cuttings from above the Y will bloom quicker but will also be more bushy than cuttings from below the Y. Something to look for are lenticels on the stems. They will be little white dots that will form before the bark begins to grow. If your cuttings are of very green wood you won't see them and those cuttings are harder to get to root. Anything with the speckles or bark will root the best. As for holding over the pot, if you can, don't cut it back. It will make a bigger bush/tree next year with more blooms. You will need to re-pot it before it starts growing next year but that is another lesson. LOL! Just keep your plant frost free and it should do okay for you. It is always a good idea to take a couple of cuttings at this time of the year to make sure they are rooted well before cool/cold weather. Then, in case your mother plant does die, you have backup.

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Ok Jo that sounds like a good idea for next year. I will make sure you keep that promise. LOL

Just maybe we will be in our new house by then. LOL

Ok Shirley thanks for the help. so you think I should not cut my brug back at all. It is already about seven feet tall now. the only place I could over winter it here would be in my DH shed. Want it continue to keep growing in there over the winter and it will get pretty cold in there too.
It is not very busy right now. The blooms are coming from the very top of the brug too, nothing close to the bottom of it. Does it just go dormant and lose it leaves during the winter? I am such a greenie at this. But I am very pleased just to see it bloom even thought it didn't have many blooms on it. The ones that did bloom were just beautiful and was really surprised to see what the actual color came out to be.

I guess it is all dependant upon what you want. If you want it tall next year with blooms a little sooner, I'd keep it whole. However, if there is anyplace on it that you can get a couple of cuttings to start, I'd do that for sure in case something would happen to the big plant.
