Thanks, Kim. Will let you know when the birdie arrives! As I told you, your birdie is leaving on Thursday, so there is still time for you to let me know which other seeds would make you happy.

Ohhhh Ursala...I just left the sunflower patch. They're coming out all different colors! I may have planted too many different colors too close together? Please forgive me if your sunflowers come out with Blue and Green Poka Dots...LOL. I think these were the Red sunflower seeds I had, but I thought I gave them all away...Some are coming out Bronze too :-0 I'll post that pic next. Also I can gather you some of these seeds. Let me know if interested.

I need the help of my traders!

Some of the lovely seeds you all sent me do not have an indication of the approximate height of the plant. If you identify any of these varieties, please let me know their approx. height and, if possible, at what distance from each other they should be sown.

- Italian White
- Beautiful red seeds from gumlla in Pakistan
- Sunset
- Ornamental blend (may include Velvet Queen, Autumn Beauty,
Lemon Queen and Indian Blanket) (Plant Fiend)
- Fun'n Sun hybrid mix
- Incredible
- False perennial Sunflower

Thank you very much!

Ursula

Ursala, I plant my Autumn Beauties 5 feet apart. Because some of them get about 4 feet wide. Mine are Biggies..my friends say I feed them Steak and Potatoes...LOL

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Ursula
These seeds are from a very big sunflower plant, height will be more than 8 feet and size of the flower will be 10 to 15 inch, hope this plant will increase the beauty of your garden.I have more seeds of this plant , tell me if you want to have more .
Distance should be 2 feet b/w plants.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Thanks gumlla! Today is the day! Seeds will be sown but not in my garden (for reasons of space). My friend Pipe (Peepa) has lots of space and hardly any plants. The Sunflowers will be the start for a new garden. They will be the start for some troubles too, because so far his dogs have been allowed to do (almost) whatever they wanted LOL.

I received many great Sunflowerseeds from my traders/garden pals and really do not need more (at least for this year LOL). Thanks to all of you!

Today we will sow approx. 50% of the seeds and the rest will be sown with intervals of 1 week; this, to stretch the flowering season.

Would you consider Sunflower Razzamatazz this year in 2005? I also have Helianthus Ring of Fire. Let me know & thanks.

Billcasey, that is such an unusual sunflower. Would you like to trade some seeds of that for Razzamatazz (U.K)? LMK & tks.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hello Buttoneer!

Haven't seen you in a long time!.

Unfortunately, I have to decline your kind offer. The seeds I requested in this thread were sowed in a friend's yard (I live in an apartment and only have two large balconies to garden) and, unfortunately most of the Sunflower plantils were eaten by slugs and 'tijeretas'. We re-sowed seeds on a weekly basis and Pipe went out slug-hunting every night, but they beated us. Only some 15/20 plants survive into adulthood.

The good thing is I saved some seeds of each of the many kinds my traderst sent me.

Pipe is seriously considering buying a house and as long as he doesn't we will not know what size his garden will be and if there is space for Sunflowers or not.

From time to time I buy a Lottery ticket, just to dream for a few days of the acre or maybe two I would buy hopefully in the mountais (at least far from the city), build a little adobe house and plant everything I grow from the many seeds I have traded and that are patiently waiting to be sowed.

Thanks for your kind offer!

Ursula

Ursula, did you know that you can kill slugs with 70% alcohol? I pour mine in a sprayer and every night, go into the greenhouse and kill lots of slugs with it. They can't stand the alcohol and burn up & die. Just a suggestion. Ok, no problem on the sunflower seeds, but if you ever want to trade, let me know. Good luck with your garden this year in 2005.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Judy, the problem wasn't killing the slugs, but finding them in a VERY BIG YARD. And there were also the very elusive 'tijeretas' (scissors), small insects with claws that destroy any new plantil, except for the weeds LOL. I would say there are millions of them and it is not possible to use posion, because Pipe is a Veterinarian and has many pets and they are allowed into most of the yard.

We are right in the middle of summer and the gardening season has been great, except ...... there is a big bird that comes to my balconies and looks for worms in my pots. It seems that when he does not find them he gets angry and pulls all newly transplanted plantils out of the soil. Yesterday he pulled the same Adenophoras out THREE TIMES. This morning I was very happy when I saw they were recovering from multiple pullouts/re-plantings, only to later find them pulled out again (and the soil 'evenly' distributed on my balcony)...... @*#%@& bird ! This has become a personal issue!!! Do you think he would drink some alcohol if I left it there for him, get drunk and feel so miserable he would never want to come back? LOL

How are your knees doing?

Hugs,

Ursula

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Hi Ursula. My knees are great! I got the shots for the 2nd time this past June and I have been walking and feeling very little pain. As long as it works & my insurance pays for it, I will continue to get the shots. You know, you could shot the bird with a b-b gun and that would discourage him. It would sting him but not hurt him. That scissors insect sounds awful. Do you have any photos of them? Thanks. Hugs right back to you.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

What's a b-b gun, Judy? Is it a water gun? I'm sure that bird is watching me, because he stricked again today! This time it was my beloved Gloriosa superba plantil.

How can you make a bird understand you will not harm him/her, but to let your plantils in peace? (otherwise I might become violent and shout some naughty words at him/her - my neighbours would be delighted to hear me shouting at a bird....)

Next time I go to Pipe's I'll try to make a photo of the 'tijeretas' - they are not very cooperative and run away.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

A b-b gun is a gun (usually for kids) that shoots small pellets that sting but do no damage.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Judy, that bird (in fact it's a couple) is smarter than I am - at least faster. When I get to the balcony the damage is already done. Yesterday I covered all the young plantils with a plastic wire (looks awful!), but I cannot cover each and every pot I have some of my plants are to feet high or taller.

Guess I will have to buy some worms for these birds ......

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

You could always get a cat?????!!!!!?????

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

I have a cat, Muschito, but he is disabled and watches the bird from a safe distance.
LOL

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Get another cat. LOL

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

I have another cat, Clarissa, but they never got along well and when we had to move back to the apartment they almost scratched each others eyes out of their heads. Clarissa is now placed with a friend that has only female cats and I pay alimony LOL. She is very happy there and only pays attention to me for the first few minutes upon my arrival, just to check if I have any treats for the kitties.

Its sad, because I would love to have two or three kitties in the house, but Muschito wants to be the one and only.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Judy, look what I'm doing to protect my plants from the attack of the silly bird:

This is a Zantedeschia Green Godess blooming for the very first time.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

I'm using the nets where supermarket fruits and potatoes are packed. Does not look nice at all, but my plants do not have to be afraid of the silly bird anymore. His last victims were 2 Passiflora mollissima plantils (I was able to recover one), the only Codonopsis pilosula that germinated for me (this one he tore in several small pieces!) and a plantil of Peumus boldus (a native tree).

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I think I'd put a cat muzzle on him! Just kidding but whatever works. Did you ever try orange peels? I use it to keep my little rat terrier dog from getting in the waste paper can and tearing everything up in there.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

No, I had not heard about orange peels. Are you shure that would keep the silly bird from tearing my plantils into little pieces?

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't know. I was thinking about dogs & cats not liking orange peels. Not sure about birds. Hey, I got it! Why don't you plant very prickly cactus around the plants your birds seem to love? They won't get near spiny plants.

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

They do, Judy! One of our native small trees/shrub, Acacia caven, has many, many thorns and is known as the tree that hosts more birds that any other LOL.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh my stars, I give up!!! LOLOLOL

Campinas, Brazil(Zone 9b)

Hi Ursula;
Do you still have some Philippiamra celosioides for an old friend ?
Beijos
Antonio

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hey, there you are!

Antonio, I sent you a private e-mail. I'm so happy to see you back!!!!!

Ursula

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Ursula, Do they sell those life size owls made of plastic in your country that are made to scare away squirrels and other birds that get in the garden?
Or maybe those pin wheels than spin around when the wind blows, just so there is the motion that might scare that thing away? Or a wind sock with long trailing streamers hanging down that might scare your visitor? How about a roll of chicken wire that would cover all the plants, somehow? There has to be a way to deter the thiing! Maybe an old cage (large). Doris

Santiago, Chile(Zone 9b)

Hi Doris!

Nope, we neither have life-size-plastic-owls nor squirrels (maybe that's why I thinks they are soooo cute!).

The net-wrapped pots have worked so far, but I can tell you: that bird is looking for revenge LOL. This is a smart enemy!

I think the pin wheels should be given a try if that silly bird (Zorzal) outsmarts my pot-netting. Thanks for the idea!

Hugs,

Ursula
