The Storm That Refuses To Die

(Zone 9a)

Day 4 - Houston is getting pounded and predictions for it to continue the rest of the weekend.

Read all about it:

We've been getting very fast moving, heavy dark clouds from your storm all the way up here in N.Central TX. I even saw a seagull fly past. We're getting occasional downpours but nothing long lasting and soaking, which we're needing. Hang in there! Can't believe we're having tropical storms this early. Those usually come in the late summer and early fall to cool us down and give the earth a long needed drink. Hope this means we're going to have a cool, rainy summer.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Bloomer-Saw the flooding on the news-terrible! Wehave gotten only clouds and a few sprinkles in Fort Worth, but it is a little cooler. Supposed to warm up to usual this weekend.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

It is hard to imagine all that rain - 10 inches in one day in some places. I am really so very sorry for the loss of life and devastating problems such deluges cause and pray that this storm will soon be over.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Hey bloomer, we are having major problems here too. Hope yall are all coping over there..lots of water here. Lisa

Lisa it grieves me to hear this - will phone again!

Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

It's pretty damp here in Britain as well. I took some flowers along to my Dad as usual and it started to rain. Well, a lady stopped to give me a lift to the cemetary gates. Thought I'd just pop along to the supermarket and see if they'd any Scottish meat pies in. Out of luck with the meat pies but I came out with a pretty full bag. And it came on to rain heavy. Hail and thunder and I was out in it. Tried sheltering under a tree. Not much help. So I just had to struggle home. Got soaked and my feet were squelching in soggy shoes. As I got nearer home I felt like the proverbial drowned rat. Must have looked like one too as another lady pulled uo to give me a lift. Got the central heating blasting away now and I'm going to head for a nce bath. Have to check the news. Don't know what it's like in other regions. This is supposed to be our summer!!

(Zone 9a)

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts. We sure need them.

Lisa, I'm thinking about you, keeping you guys in my prayers as I know you're getting this as bad as we.

I've lived here in Galveston County for nearly 50 years, been through 2 major hurricanes, and we have NEVER had anything like this. For such a minor storm, it has wreaked considerable havoc.

Houston was virtually shut down yesterday and last night. I-45, I-59 and I-10, all the major thoroughfares through Houston were closed. Only 2 hospitals are open at this time, the other 9 have no electricity! Police and fire dept. vehicles are stranded all over town. Folks from here in Galv. county are taking boats up there to help w/rescues. It is unbelievable!

We woke this a.m. to minor flooding (in Galveston County). The bayou on the back of our property was just beginning to overflow when the rain stopped, so right now, we're OK. But they are predicting heavy rains for us tonight. EMS is getting ham-radio operators set up county-wide just in case.

And to think I've been planting drought-tolerant plants this year :D

Be safe and, as Tasha Tudor says, "Take Joy". This will pass.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Bloomer I saw the news on the TV tonight and it really is devastating and disruptive. My thoughts are with you and everyone else. I hope that the storm moves away quickly so that you can all start to undo the havoc that has been caused by this Tropical girl!

Hi Bloomer,

Saw the story of the floods and storms down in Texas on the UK news tonight. Looks like a significant loss of life. My thoughts are with you.

Lisa
We (Texas) are in the clear now. However, it's taken it's toll. 15 confirmed deaths in Houston. I ckecked your local radar and it doesn't look good.

Been thinking about you all day. Came to see if you had checked in here.

Be very careful, my friend. I know what it's like. Keep us posted.

Lisa! Your town made the MSN news! Sounds awful! We were flooded once back in '81 but survived. The water got up to the dash in the car. When the house flooded, it was slower...although the waves were lapping at the windowsills, it had to slowly seep into the house, which took about 6". Incredible amount of cleanup. It rained 24" in 12 hours. I learned to appreciate water's mighty power that year. My prayers are with all of you suffering

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning folks...The weather has finally let up. We are in a mess here. Roads are closed and homes are flooded. It is unbelieveable. We have had over 35 inches since last tuesday. It has stormed every hard for 6 days. My yard is totally underwater and our water supply is contaminated. What a mess here to clean up...Lisa

(Zone 9a)

Glad to hear the worst is over. Although clean-up is no party, the main thing is that folks are safe.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Lisa and Bloomer, and any other flood victims.
I know I'm pretty new here, but I think I'm not the only one that will be willing to help with plants and seeds once you get to that point. I'm sure it's not even close to a priority, but once things settle down for you, I'm more than willing to share anything I have. Just let me (us) know.
In the meantime, you're in our thoughts and prayers.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

tiG, thanks so much for your kind offer. It will be a long time before I replant anything..hurricane season has just started for us. So with that in mind, I will take a "wait and see" approach. My husband is a landscaper so I get lots of plants here and there. I am not really wanting to plant anything any time soon..gun shy, i suppose. But your kindness means so much more. Thank you, Lisa

(Zone 9a)

tiG, that is so thoughtful of you to make such a generous offer. My plants fared OK. Fortunately, we had very little standing water and just for a short time. The only one I was worried about was a young baptisia I had just set out that was going under water. I dug that little bugger up and put him back in a pot because I don't have anymore seeds for it, and I've been so anxious to have some grow in my garden.

Bloomer, I'm watching my Baptista very carefully for the seeds to ripen. If it doesn't make it, let me know.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Are there rainbows in the sky yet? I really sympatize with those who have to clean up after floooding! We have had to replace carpets and deal with silt and water stains and drying things out in the past and I know it is a lot of hard work and frustration. Glad to hear that the storm is clearing up for you! That was a lot of water to arrive in such a short period of time! Best wishes.

(Zone 9a)

Thanks tiG. I'll give you a holler if they don't make it, but so far, so good.
Zanymuse, the sun is shining plenty now. And the grass is growing before my eyes LOL!!
