Chinese mayapples
Fantastic... Where did you find them?
Cool! Great leaf colors.
Are they edible when ripe, like our native Mayapples?
DD
i got the first one off Ebay the hybrid kaleidescope
the other two i got from the UK (Paul Christian rare plants)
http://rareplants.co.uk/
eje
what part is edible ? the tuber ?
i do not know if the chinese are ?
Dick Strever
How do they handle your heat?
I grew up with Podophyllum peltatum in the midwest. From what I know, all parts of the plant are poisonous except the ripe fruit (Mayapple).
This page has some information:

eje
i would expect they wouldn't be that different & most likely are poisonous like their american kin.
DD
they got a little thirsty, had to water them each day during the hot weather. & now some of them are pooping out but new growth seems to be coming up on some of them.
here is a pict of one of the P.Delavayi with new growth popping up at the base

I love Mayapple. Especially chinese ones. I am planning to order from Chen Yi Nursery of China in January. Their website: http://home.no.net/chenyi. They have large collection of mayapple, and the price looks great ($3-$5 for most of them). The shipping is quite expensive. On their website, instead call Podophyllum, they call Dysosma. I will post follow-up in the spring.
Wonderful Fang! I wish I new you were placing a order. I would have gone in on the shipping with you to get some plants myself. What other plants did you order? How was the whole process. Thanks,
Kristi
Fang
your Dysosma pleiantha var. looks really nice - i like it
if you plan on ordering again i also would like to add on
i tried to look at that site you ordered from but i can't read chinese :-)
my Hybrid Podophyllum "kaleidescope" recently grew another new leaf & i missed it
it was in the back behind a bunch of EE plants
i think i will get all of the mayapples out in front again to enjoy them
Dick
Dick, I found out the link is not working for chenyi nursey. Here is the one: http://home.no.net/chenyi/ (It's in English).
Kristi, I ordered arisaema, paris, epimedium and mayapple. I like chinese mayapple a lot so I ordered everything on their list except those are unaviable. The process was easier than I thought. I fist got import permit from USDA. Then I email her the ones I want (also ask her if they are hardy enough for my zone). Then she will shipping to me. After I received it, I sent her a check. The shipping is quite expensive. But still, I ordered 52 plants, the total is $232. I think it's a good deal. I will definitely order again next winter. (She only ships plants during Nov-April). I think my next order will be concertrate on arisaema.
Those are sooo cool. I've seen pictures but have never seen any to buy around here.
:) Donna
Now I'm just going to cry! I would love to have ordered. Hey Strever want to go in on a order? I'm off to check their website
yes :-)
Fang
thank you so much for the good link in English
& WOW they really have a bunch of NEAT ariseama
DD
i think i would like to order a bunch of stuff
their facts page say they ship Nov thru Mar
so if you want we need to figure out which ones we want
& get the paperwork started
Dick
One warning, I looked at gardenweb.com. They said ChenYi is famouns on mislabled her plants. Well, I guess the genus is corrent, but the cultivar might be wrong. For me, since I like pretty much all the Mayapple, so it's no a big deal if I get something different.
Fang
what does the altitude mean ?
are the prices in US$ ?
i'm like you i want to order all the Chinese mayapple
Dick
Dick, I think the altitude is where they collect the plants. (I suspect that those are not nursey propagated, that's why they are very likely to be mislabled.)
Yes, all the price is in US. I actually have the currently list. I can email you.
Fang
Dick,
I like your P.Delavayi. Are they all marble leaves? I did order one from ChenYi. But didn't know if it's marble leaves yet. Only time will tell.
Fang
are your plants indoors under artificial light ?
so far all your picts are showing bright green plants
mine have been outdoors all along with only mottled sunlight or shade
i'm in a semi tropical 10/11 zone here in Fountain Valley
& yes both of my P.Delavayi had marbled colored leaves
i wonder what the difference would be under artificial light ?
http://davesgarden.com/pf/b/Berberidaceae/Podophyllum/
Dick
Dick,
Right now, they are all indoor (in the basement) under the artificial light. ChenYi told me all her Mayapple are hardy to my zone (6a). So I am going to plant them outside in the spring. Actually, this morning I saw my two Dysosma veitchii var.(marbled leaves) are pushing out. The leaves are not as marble as yours. And yours had mutliple leaves there. I only saw one leaf per each plant. I will take more pictures when the leaves unfold.
Fang
take picts at all stages
it is so neat to see the tiny heads unfurl
& sometimes there are more leaves in there :-)
i have moved my pots up to the bench so i can watch them more closely now :-)
hope i haven't lost them, but i can see some growth so all should be OK
i will take a pict of the neglected "kaleidescope" that still has one leaf
Dick
Dick,
Haven't your mayapple given seed? If so, did you try to grow them yet? I am thinking about growing them from seed. I found out has the seeds for Podophyllum hexandrum: http://www.thegurugarden.com. I ordered some hardy cyclamen seeds from them. If the germination rate is good, next year, I will try mayapple seeds.
Fang
i did NOT get any seed from any of them
but they all have large healthy root systems
i think i may repot them & see if that gives them some new vigor
Dick
Okay Fang keep posting these pictures and I'm going to come and raid your basement. :)
Kristi, did you order from ChenYi yet?
I find out I am really in love with Mayapple. My DH asked me what's so special about them, and what do they do? (He is not into plants at all). I tried to explain to him. He looked at me like I am crazy. Then he said he is going to make a bed in the basement so I can sleep next to my little baby. He also complained that I spend more time with my plants than our little two year old daughter. I told him I am thinking about quitting my job to be a gardener.
Fang your husband sounds like mine! Last winter he put a rocking chair in the basement for me and had a big grow light set up. LOL.... I spent many hours hanging (hiding) out down there.
I didn't order as I don't want to push the dormancy issues. I will for sure this winter.
p.s. I thought you were a he
kristi
Kristi, great. We can order them together. I can't wait. Actually, I was complaining to my husband that I might order them too early. I want them to be outside. But now they started to grow so fast that I need bigger pot to put them. Yesterday, I saw one arisaema's root is out of the little pot. I will repot it this weekend. I guess I have two months to go before I can put them outside.
