Why wouldn't my trees bloom?

5 years ago I was given an American Redbud and a Washington Hawthorne, small whips at the time. They are now over 12' tall, healthy and full of leaves, but as of yet they haven't bloomed in the spring. Does it take awhile for them to bloom, do I need to prune or add something to the soil, do I need others for cross pollination?
