seed starting

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ok Melissa, here are some pics I took for you. Forget your dome. Try a clear plastic bag. Put water inside, swirl it around then drain well. Place 6 pack in bottom of bag.

LOL. Look what I found. I guess it is time I move them out of the bag and into dirt!

Close bag airtight! I blow air in and then twist and use a velcro closure. After a few days the bag does deflate. I do not touch it again until the seedlings are up and ready to come out.

Oh always make sure you have just washed hands before you start.

Place bagged 6 pack close to lights. Usually I have them even closer but I have taller seedlings under them also right now.

Here are some babies just emerging in the rockwool. The pic is taken thru the plastic bag. So glad I checked on them. I think I am at seed burnout.

When did you start these seeds, Melissa? In the winter? Now is so much easier.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Thanks Kell.
I started them in winter. I had them in a dome, and yes, I opened the lid and checked frequently...

I did a few seeds just like your picture above with the glad disposable and plastic bag. I guess I need to get some more seeds and try again since my plant stand is empty. :-)

I'm going to go take a picture of my brug, and you can tell me if I have a "y" yet! LOL

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I did the same thing as you do! I planted the seed by 5/18 (few weeks ago), and now some are sprouted in the Rockwool! Yay! it work quickly!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Lots of Y's but are any what I want?

Darn, not the kind of Y you need. I think Doc put a picture on one of the threads of a brug with a Y, but I'll have to go look and see if I can find it. I call those side shoots. They will bloom eventually.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

http://davesgarden.com/t/434677/ At 1:06 PM Rootdoctor posted a picture of a Y. It is a great picture for showing what that first Y will look like.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Darn it, and I was just positive that top one would turn into a Y...
Maybe the two I ordered will have Y's?? I hope so!

Am I supposed to be stripping off these side shoots?? I am completely ignorant when it comes to these!

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I also keep hoping for a Y on some of my seedlings, Im so positive sometimes that I have a Y that I actually "see" a bud.. lol NOPE another little leaf coming out.

As far as pinching the side shoots, I think if you let them go, you will get a fuller bushier type of brug, at least thats what mine are doing. I started pinching some when they started putting on side shoots, and I ripped a couple of leaves down the trunk.. that CANT be good lol. So I decided until I know how to better pinch the smaller leaves, I will just let them go. I think Tracey said in a post once, when you take off leaves, instead of pulling down on the leaves, push up on the leaf. I do this now, and you hear it snap, and its a MUCH cleaner break for me.
Edited to add, I do that on the bigger leaves, not the small side shoots.

Melissa_Ohio: I just received five brugs and all of them came with Ys, as well as buds on three. A very nice group of brugs. SherryLike

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Where did you buy yours at Sherry?

Thanks Shelly... I feel like such an igit!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Melissa, they are so healthy looking I bet they will Y soon!! I prefer the look of an alley (Lollipop) tree so I clean my sideshoots if I think the plant has a chance to be a tall alley tree. Otherwise, I may leave them hoping it will put out a sucker that will grow into a tall alley tree. I find the bushes messy looking. But that is my own personal preference Melissa.

The Y will come at the top growth tip. Root's Y is an old Y. Here is a relatively new Y. It will Y then each top half of the Y will make another Y and it keeps going, doubling the Y at first then quadrupling then double quadruples on up.

The Ys are noted on here and the red marks are showing tiny buds. The lowest multiple red dots shows the first flower that has already bloomed. They follow the peduncle and the calyx. Now tiny buds are forming on the new Ys that have formed.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have noticed on a seedling that the first flower grows at the crotch of the first Y. I always think of it as a preview of what is to come. And then more follow only after more Ys are formed. They bud at the crotch of each Y.

See the bud hanging off the crotch of the first Y?

Thanks Kell, that explains it a little better for me. Yours is so green! Mine is so woody looking... is that normal?

How tall will it be before it starts making the Y? I'm going to go out and look through the top leaves now! LOL
I was so looking forward to having a bloom this year... now I'm wondering. My luck, I'll end up with the bushiest brug in the world with no Y's! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

This is all new growth Melissa, probably from the last few weeks. It takes a while for it to get woody. You will have flowers soon! Do not despair. LOL!

Are your plants from cuttings? I take it from the names they are not seedlings. If the cutting was taken from above the first Y, they bloom fairly quickly. If taken from below the first Y, it can take awhile for it must Y first.

No set height! I have seedlings that I stunted in 1 gallon pots that Yed at 3 feet and others that I moved up regularly until in a 15 gallon pot and they can hit 8 ft before they Y. I have a few seedlings out in the garden, in the ground, that did not Y until 12 feet.

Hope this helps!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

I don't know where they came from...

crossing fingers that the new ones come tomorrow, and already have a Y on them!!

Kell I am new to this so forgive me for asking such stupid questions but what do you mean you put a six pack in bottom of pot.

LOL,I think she's talking about the small blocks of rockwool.....

Hi Melissa_Ohio!! I recently purchased brugs from Barbara Ward, who participates on this forum and some times has brugs on eBay. She lives in Hattiesburg MS, not all that far from me. All five brugs had Ys and 3 have buds and they are just lovely and appear very healthy. I understand Barbara has 75 different brugs and many other plants as well. I believe you can look her up on the member listing as BWard. I have never seen anything wrapped any better, not a single leaf was bruised!! SherryLike

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Welcome Sami! Are you joining brugmania? LOL? I would run if I were you!

I do not know why I said 6 pack! You know I do not drink beer, CC!! LOL. I was referring to the little 6 packs of cells that starter plants come in. I should have said my rubbermaid like container.

I put either dirt or rockwool in a small rubbermaid like container. Wet it well, drain it. Press my seeds on top. Then run water into my clear plastic bag and drain that. I then place my rubbermaid like container into the bottom of the bag. Blow into it and close it quickly. Place closely to my lights on my seed rack.

Feel free to ask us anything Sami. We love new brug victims. Are you startng some seed?

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Hi, again, Melissa_Ohio!!! I lost this thread and finally have found it again, whew!! Melissa, I also bought brugs via e-mail from Country Gardens and I was equally happy with them, they are doing nicely, tho I did try to kill them because I didn't know to soak them before potting. JT, the owner of Country Gardens, saw my SOS on this forum and was ever so nice to walk me through the crisis, while other forum members 'held my hands'. All of my plants from JT were also healthy and all except a couple had Ys, and one plant came with 3 buds which bloomed a few days after they arrived. I also purchased seeds from JT and I planted 18, and guess what, if two more sprout, I'll be batting 100%!!! The seeds are LOTS of fun!!

Now, in addition to JT and Barbara Ward, there are several others on the forum that sell brugs. I'm just not positive who they are because I'm such a newbie, and most everyone has two names, forum name and real name. I do think 'Tracie' and MaryinLA sell them, and maybe Cala. Maybe someone will tell us who all the people are on the forum that have brugs for sale. Or, direct us to the site if there is a place on DG that has that info.

When considering where to purchase, you can go to the Garden Watchdog and see the feedback for many of the places that have plants, gardening supplies, etc, online and others, and you can read the comments of fellow gardners. Hope this helps...

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Kell I would like to start some seeds if my Brug does well. I don't even have any blooms on it yet. Have only had it for a week now. I really don't know how to take care of it or even how to begin to start the seeds. I grew some Datura from seeds but they were realy easy. Had some beautiful blooms on them last year and since I have move from Florida to Nc have not had a chance to start any seeds. I will just keep watching your post and learn all I can about the brugs. I have always admired them and wanted to get one started.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

OK, the 2 new brugs came, but I don't know which is which, they weren't tagged! I have ALL the luck....

Anyway, this one had a really short "trunk" and then what looks like it "MIGHT" be a Y, is it? It's clear down at the bottom by the dirt.

And here is the second one. Not planted yet. According to the place I bought them, the smaller one, this one is the Frosty Pink, and the larger one, the one in the ground is the Charles Grimaldi.

Sherry, I'm going to have to try the places you suggested. Do you use the thread watcher? When someone posts on one of the threads you're interested in, it pops up on your main screen when you log in.

I appreciate everyones help so much. I REALLY want blooms this year! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Melissa, sorry but I do not think that is a Y but a side branch. Those are good sized brugs though for being mailed to you.

Sami, I am sure it will do great. These are very tolerant of many conditions! And very forgiving of what we do to them.

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Sigh...

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

YES, Melissa, I LOVE the thread watcher - however, I often subscribe to so many threads that I forget where I read what, duh!! I've also used the Plant Database, which is really helpful. And I've used the plant identification several times, I LOVE having all that at my finger tips. Unless something happens to improve the nursery selections (in my area), which I don't like because none of them are named, I'll buy only from forum subscribers. With exception of one bargain, my nursery plants cost more than the ones from the forum members, even with the postage and, as I said, the quality is far superior. And, I really love the convenience of shopping with PayPal, what a nifty service!! It's nice to meet you on the forum, Melissa, seems like there are lots of newbies and it's so nice to have the experts here to guide us along our way...

OK, no Y's, but is this a bud??????

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You have a couple of Y's there and yes, a couple of buds too. Both are coming out of the Y's. Congrats!! You are going to have blooms!!

Yep, you got a bud. Congrats.

Yes, that's a bud.

I 'think' I see two Ys, and yes, you have a bud, and it is a very nice bud and looks like it's happy where it lives. Congrats!!!

Oh Melissa, aren't you excited. Linda

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe it!!! OK, so where did these Y's come from? LOL I didn't have them a few weeks ago, now I have more than one?

I gotta go check the other ones!

Whitewater, WI

LOL, congratulations!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Melissa, it gets better - just wait until you go out and start finding lots of buds and they start opening, the blossoms are beautiful and the fragrance floats through all your garden, it's lots of fun and I've only had a few small flushes...

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi Kell, You have some really great information. Thanks for helping me to understand alittle better. Just when I think I've got it, I learn something new.

I want to try your method with the plastic bag...the only thing is I only have peat pods to use and I can't for the life of me find the clear plastic bags so I'll have to substitute the ziploc baggies. What do you think? Does this sound like it would work just as well until I can get my hands on the rockwool and the correct baggies????
