WANT TO START SOME MORE SEEDS

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey,
There are some awesome US brugs coming out this year!

there are tons of people selling them ,well not tons.....
Just check the stores here at Daves

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Thanks for explaining it Kel, yes, I did peel the seeds, I soaked them, then put them on my plant stand under grow lights. I had read somewhere that sometimes they take a long time to Germinate... so I left them til I was putting out Daylily seedlings this spring... about 3 months I guess total, and not one single germination! If you want to email me what you do, please, go ahead, maybe I'll buy another pack of seeds and try it.

Unfortunately I don't have a basement... I hope that I can bring what I have now, (four) in the house for the winter and keep the cats out of them! If I can't keep them alive that way, I may have to take them to my moms or my mom in laws, they both have basements... :-)

The ones I bought that I am expecting to arrive anytime now since they were mailed on Tuesday are Charles Grimaldi and Frosty Pink. Both are supposed to be 2 Gallon size... the largest size that I think they would ship. I have Versicolor Orange and Tropical Sunset already.

Karrie, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to Hijack your thread.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Geez Melissa.............. you bought my old friend Frosty? LOL

Some here winter them under their beds or even in their closets! LOL. Definitely take little cuttings and put them in the house to grow over winter, just for insurance.

You need to try rockwool! It works for me like a miracle. Also did you leave the seeds pressed in but still visible on the surface of the dirt? Did you put them in an enclosure, making a humid mini GH for them?

Did you buy them from a member here on Dave's? Some seeds are bad. Susie sells great seeds. eBay sometimes sucks! A friend just bought, I think 5 brugs from eBay and each one died within 5 weeks!!! I had just sent her all the fancy pinks and she runs out in her enthusiasm and buys brugs of questionable worth on eBay. She proudly told me. LOL, I could have throttled her.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Thanks so much for answering my question, regarding hybridizing. It is pretty much as I had thought, I just wanted to be sure.

CC - those whites are absolutely GORGEOUS! So thick and glossy, almost like a merigne that hasn't browned in the oven - so rich looking - WOW!

Melissa, you're ok - this thread helped ask and answer alot of questions that were along the same line.

:) Happy Gardening!

Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)

Thanks Karrie... I hate hijacking threads. :-) I'm glad you're not upset.

Kel, I did the seeds in a dome, I lightly pressed them into the soil, and yes, I bought them from Cala's store, so it HAD to be me! LOL

I even tried a few in sponges, but haven't tried the rockwool yet.

The brugs I bought I bought from places someone here recommended, and the last ones from a place in the Garden Watchdog that had good reviews. :-)

Now, I need to search on what this "Y" is that I keep seeing repeated.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Yeah - what is this "Y"???? Mine have lots of Y's, as in new leaves, in y's, little ones everywhere, so I figure they are just new leaves and branches coming on. Can someone post a pic of an early "Y" for us to see, so we know what to look for?

Karrie, here is what we mean by a Y,see the crotch in this plant,it has a Y shape, everything above that crotch(Y) is what we refer to as the flowering region,a plant must mature till it gets one.any cutting from this plant, taken above the Y,already has the genetics to flower. any cutting taken from below the Y,will have to mature, and develop a Y.
It is simple, just not simple to explain, when it comes to you,you will laugh.

The brug forum is known for threads taking all sorts of different directions. I think it is a great trait. Makes things much more interesting. Feel free to hijack any and all of mine.

Melissa, did your dome have condensation on the inside top? Did you open it and water alot? (bad) Did you get fungus on the soil?

Listen Melissa, I will start a new thread on seed starting so someone else can answer your Y questions here. I just took some pics for you.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

'Thanks Rootdoctor you answered a question i was wondering about. Why some of the cuttings given me did not have a Y and flowered.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Thanks RD! :) I think mine have a ways to go. Yours look like trees - mine look like big semi-bushy plants!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

I was glad to read about that "Y" thing. I have seen it mentioned many times but never knew the significance.

I'm also new to brug-growing. So far, I've purchased three plants (peach versicolor, Snowbank, and recently, Charles Grimaldi).

I have NO interest in hybridizing, and nurturing seeds is next to impossible for me. That's why I buy established plants. I just want to see that mini-tree form with pretty flowers in my yard.

So, having no interest in propagating brugs, if I remove those ugly-looking seed pods (if and when they appear - LOL), that won't hurt my brugs, will it?

Jean

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Ugly looking???? LOL Jean, they have their own beauty! I give you a year and you will be singing a different tune! LOL

some of the pods I've seen remind me of jalapeno peppers, lol! Not to worry, this hot pepper freak won't try eating one. :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

They do come in all sizes and shapes which make them so interesting! Here are L'Amour pods. Anyone have a good one of EP?

See - that L'Amour one looks like peppers!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I have seeds from JT coming up. They are:

Becca Lynn x Chas Grimaldi

Pink Beauty x Rothkeisch

Is this a common cross and, or is JT the hybridizer?? If it is a common cross, what might I expect the blossoms to look like and what color might they be? TIA!!!! SherryLike

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

Kell....guts?

Now THAT looks like something from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" -- those seed pods that take over your human form when you go to sleep! LOL.

As long as the pods don't burst open and start looking at me, I guess I'll be alright :D

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Karrie,

I shared with you seeds from (Isabella X ?) and the hybridizer's name (Karyn Riggs, alias Crestedchik). We don't know who the daddy is, therefore the "?". Isabella's been a very naughty Brug!

If you can, try to jot down information about the seeds or keep the seed packet for future reference. It helps once you start acquiring a whole houseful of Brugs!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Naughty Brug? meaning? lol!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

She was a wanton woman and didn't care who was fondling her stigma......

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Wow this gets really deep and like you say it is just like a family tree which I also do. So let me see if I get this straight I got a brug as a gift from my daughter and son-in-law and the it came from a nursery in Norfolk, Va. The tag says brugmansia Arborea. So is the name Arborea and is that what it starts out as. I am like Laura and new to this but want to make sure I keep it legit. Have a long way to go but might want to trade down the road if it does well.
Sami

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Sorry I meant Karrie. Another question is there a certain time you take the pods off the plant. On my Datura I waited until it turned brown to take it off. Tied a nylon hose around it to catch the seeds.
Sami

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

You lucky girl!!!!!
An arborea!

With your's it maybe different
if it is a true arborea it will be able to pollinate itself.....
you don't need another brug.......

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Sami, if you ever feel the urge to share seeds from that Arborea, keep me in mind! :)

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks CC! I couldn't have said it better myself! :~)

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

I hope you are right CC. I sent you email JoRoadrunner is here at my house and she told me to email you the questions I had about the brug. She said you would know the answers I needed. I will keep everyone posted on how it is doing. Would be glad to share some seeds if it is a true Arborea.
Sami

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

If Jo is there, you Hug her neck for me!!
Arborea is my Fav,it has nice soft fuzzy leaves, and smells like Grape Koolaid.

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

Rootdoctor Jo is here and we are having a good time. Jo says if you had come to the Iowa roundup you could have hugged her yourself. This is my first Brug and I sure hope the nursery is right and it is an Arborea. What color are the Arborea's? I will have to go and check the leaves to see if it is soft and fuzzy. No blooms yet though. It has a big Y on it so I hope to see some blooms soon.
Sami

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi Sami,
The blooms would be white and small. Very fragrant. The top leaves will feel like a baby's behind. They are so soft they almost feel like cotton. An arborea for me, doesn't like the sun. Maybe a little morning sun. Mine wasn't a good bloomer. Don't be surprised if you don't have an arborea. There has been more than one misnamed brug and many people have bought arborea seeds that ended up being something else. After you get in your new place, write me. I bet I can help you out this fall.

Tell Jo, I say HI.

Shirley

Can't leave Bob out. Tell him Hi also.

Brugie I went out this morning and felt of the leaves on my brug and it is very soft to the touch, kinkda fuzzy like. You may be right about it not being a Arborea. It was labeled that from the nursery that it was bought. It is a good three feet tall right now and has a big Y on it. Guess I will just have to wait and see.
Kell thanks for the sight it was very interesting. Will just have to keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.

Sami

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Wish we could see it. They do look different from most brugs. I hope it is what the tag said. You will know when it blooms. The fragrance is wonderful.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

If it is true Arborea Sami, it is the best smelling brug to my nose. I just love it! I find nursery bought brugs have the weirdest names on them. In my experience, this would be a weird brug to have selling in a nursery. Of course I only nursery in a 100 mile radius in this huge country!

East Prairie, MO(Zone 7a)

I hope you guys are right about the brug. I really would be excited if it was a true brug and will let you guys know when it blooms. Will take lots of pictures.

Sami

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Sami,
I have 3 brug seedling that were from seeds I bought on ebay as arborea..

none of them are

If anyone else bought them (those seeds),say ,at a nursery, and they didn't know what a true arborea looks like, they would tag it arborea.
So it wouldn't totally be their fault ......

so anyway ,I have 3 plants tagged
Arborea-NOT

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

CC, I also purchased some of the Arborea-not seeds. There was a lot of people who got fooled on these seeds. I also purchased a cutting from Ebay that was supposed to be Arborea and it wasn't Arborea either. It hasn't bloomed yet but it doesn't have leaves like an Arborea but I have one at Kells' house that's blooming. LOL.
