Have some for trade or sase, they are clogging the pond already and it's only june 1!
In trade I'd like to have a new marginal, mine didn't survive the flood too well. Anything other than variegated cellery (does anything kill this stuff? LOL) and marsh marigold. Thats all I have left for marginals. Maybe some water clover or water forget me nots or?
Or land plants black mondo grass.
Or sase :)
Water Lettuce and Hyacinth
Jody, do you need cattails, green celery, or Iris pseudocorus? I may have a few others that could give up a small start.
Chele,
I have some Black Mondo, I can throw into the pot, if you want to do partnered trade.
Ric
I have lots of the forget me nots I would trade for a Hyachinth or two. After awhile we throw them away because they clog the pond , but I have never been able to keep any over the winter hereand have to get new ones each spring. LMK LOu
FGMK's are water plants?! WOW. Bet those are purrrrrrrrrdy!
Jody did you find enough things? If not yell?
Ditto to Mystic. May be interested in one or two for SASE. All I could offer is STRING ALGAE, LOL.
Thanks mystic!!!
LOL GW
You can keep the algae ;) just drop me a note with your addy :)
You've got mail. Good thing you were offering, too; my mom came by today and was all over me about getting some for her, LOL. :D
Water lettuce and hyacinth are both illegal in Texas.
Subject to:
# a fine of not less than $200 nor more than $2000,
# a jail term not to exceed 180 days, or
# both a fine AND imprisonment.
Thanks etex, but no one wantint them here on this thread from TX ... or any southern state where they are illegal for that matter ;)
I know jody, I just threw that in for information. I saw a nursery near here selling water lettuce last year, so apparently they are not strict with the law, or the nursery is pretty dumb.

*pushes all her illegals under the rug casually* :D
They are even illegal to ship from some states and into others. Not trying to scare anyone but just relating the facts so you are very careful.
Now that others have joined in to mention the illegal aspect of these plants, I will share one of my reasons for posting the above. Shortly after I joined DG, I mentioned something about water lettuce for my deck pond in one of my posts. I received several eMails warning me that these plants were illegal and warning me to watch what I say in my posts on the forum. I was a little bit shocked and was left with a bad impression for quite awhile.
It burns me that something which responsible ponders are capable of handling (and destroying once they're done with it) is illegal. I understand the reason why they don't want it in the native waterways, and I understand that the idiots who would just toss it in the local lake or bayou are the ones who ruin it for everyone. But still...*grumble* *grumble*
And they're not even illegal here in Ohio -- I'm just emitting sympathy grumbles.
It is truly a pain but there are people out there who might take them to an area that was finally cleared of them and release some more, floods, animals transporting them, etc. We can be responsible but we can also be educated that there might be a problem if the box ever split during the shipping. I know I have gotten boxes in trades that were maimed and you could see what was in them. In fact I recently got a package from a nursery that had been rewrapped by the postal service in Boise and sent on to me with items missing.
They are not illegal in my state either but they are in close by states.
Floods -- didn't think of that. I know from working at J&P that there are many agricultural restrictions when it comes to Arizona; many gift plants we couldn't ship there.
In a lot of seed catalogs I noticed that they said they can't shiip onion, leek or chive seeds to Idaho. I finally found out that the onion growers of our state asked for that regulation because of a worry about some of the diseases that can be transferred on the seeds! There are many reasons for these seemingly stupid regulations. Makes life more interesting yet maddening too.
Chele,
Do you still have cattail to offer sase? If so, drop me a note kc8lcw@insight.rr.com
I got the plants today, Jody. They look great - thanks a million. :)
Glad to know they look good. I really crammed the bag trying to fit as many as I could. Was afraid they would all be crushed, LOL.
I'm sure I'll plenty more if you or anyone needs them when I get back from my trip in about a week. I really think they multiply over night!
Jody,
If you have any left, I can use some lettuce and hyacinth. Drop me note (address is above) and let me know. Thanks in advance.
Dave
If not, Dave, you're welcome to some of ours. I bet they'll multiply pretty fast. :)
Hi Dave
I just got home from a trip last night and just saw your post. I have plenty! My pond is almost completely covered since I have been gone and many of them will be going to compost! Just drop me a note with your addy and I'll get them to as soon as I can.
Jody, did you get my e-mail regarding postage? I tossed the box from the water plants when we got it and I don't remember how much you paid for postage. Let me know and I'll get payment to you.
Is there any left for postage Jody???
Shoot Dave, I didn't see this. I'm sending you an E. :)
Dave: I have *oodles* of hyacinth and lettuce if you want some. Between Chele and us, we can have you rolling in the green!
Kimberley,
I am rolling in green already! Jody sent me a nice bunch of floaters (hyacinth and lettuce), and they have had babies, and their babies have had babies and those babies have had babies! I was going to give some to my neighbor yesterday, but when I got over there, she was picking a bunch out of her pond to give to me!
I really need to get rid of some, my Koi are swimming to the top, flipping on top of the lettuce, and struggling to get back into the water! I may end up just composting!
Dave
LOL, fish hazard, huh? I hear ya! I'm giving two bundles of starts to two Freecycle Newark members today.

Jody, how do you keep the hyacynith alive over the winter? Im getting some and want to make sure (as best as possible) that I dont kill it all.
Drav, sorry, I haven't been back to this forum for a while.
I don't over winter the hyacinth, I just get new ones every spring :)
okey dokey, guess thats what I prolly will do too. Easier than overwintering and by the looks of it someone "always" has some. LOL
Jody thank you for the hyacinth's. They came in today in perfect shape. They have a good home. You have mail comming. Ted
edited to ask if you got enough for your pond. I am going to repot a red crinkle plant and umbrella plant. Still looking for some water lettice

Glad they made it Ok Ted. Was that enough to get ya started? I still got tons ;) I compost it at least once a week.
Sorry, I'd have sent you a bunch of lettuce... but I decided I didn't want any this year so sent it all off in the boxes earlier.
Whats a red crinkle plant?
TA
Let me know how your lilllies do with the Koi.....
I have not been able to grow any lillies! My koi uproot them, bite them off, etc.....
I have tried barriers, netting, you name it. My Koi are only about 8 months old, and about 12 inches long, head to tail.
I have lost more lillies........
Best of Luck.....
Jody here is a link to the crinkle plant. I am taking cuttings off of it. Have is in a pot in the vegie garden. Want to divide it so I will not lose it by mistake. You are welcome to a start.
http://plantsdatabase.com/go/52982/index.html
So far my KOI have not bothered any of the lily's.
I am going to try and sink a large plastic tub with holes in it, and have the rim at water level, maybe I can keep them out that way.....without interrupting the look of the pond
