Very tall Autumn Joy Sedum....

Hernando, MS(Zone 7b)

In the Fall of '99, I put two Autumn Joy Sedum plants in my front yard flower bed. Last year they both grew to about 3 feet tall and fell over. They never bloomed. They were not spindly, just huge! This year I cut them back, trying to keep them smaller and took some of the cuttings and just stuck in the ground in some of my other flower beds. Most of them are growing! Some of the new plants are starting to develop flower heads and look like they will be beautiful, but small.
Could my original plants be over nourished, and since they face the West, do they get too much sun? I love the blooms they are supposed to have, but I'm very disappointed that they have never bloomed.
I've never been much of a gardener, but since I moved to Northern MS, I have a yard full of lovely flowers and most of them seem to grow larger than the instructions said!
Any suggestions would be appreciated....

Hi MsPatty..welcome:)
As I read your post, I thought about the really tall A. Joy Sedums that I've seen at Frank's Nursery and my shorter ones growing in my garden. The tall ones, which were greenhouse grown most likely means they were given more than ample water, fertilizer and who knows what else. On the other hand, my sedum doesn't get any of that and they stay shorter and bloom. Perhaps yours are getting too much attention and water (?). These are succulents and I think they like it hot and dry to perform better. Is your soil too high in nitrogen (compost, additives, etc..)? I found out that the more I pampered my succulents, the worse they did. Even my dragon's blood sedum wants to be left alone.
These are just some ideas I thought I'd share. Happy gardening :)
Trish
