what should be my first ones?

Beverly Hills, CA

here's the problem. What should I get for my first brug plants? I'm thinking pink. I asked my gardner & showed him a photo. He said oh angel trumpet. pink, white or apricot? He said they don't have names but are very large. Bambi has one that's beautiful now but doesn't know the name & its not pink. Does the name of a brug make a big difference in how large & bloomy it is. I'd like to come home from work & have a few big bloomers waiting for me.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

WELCOME Skirtz!

There are generic brugs sold in California all over that do not have names. They are usually great performers and easy to grow which is why they are so popular. Kind of like the last 20 American Idol contestants. They are winners but have no contracts!

However here, lots of us are hobby hybridizers and are cross breeding for extra special brugs. We love them and name them! LOL. We also have a couple professional hybridizers esp. Monika who guide us on our quest.

There are a few extra special brugs, kind of like Diana, George, Jasmine, and La Toya. But many of us are still trying to make that that really special brug like, Fantasia! LOL

Each has its own characteristics. shape, color, blooming habits. You should look thru the gallery for some ideas of what appeals to your eye. Some are available and some are just American dreams (only available in Europe).

Do you have a PO Box that people can mail you cuttings or seeds? I don't have any to offer at this point, because it is my first year growing them - I started mine from seed last February (from seeds given to me from here) and they are now about over a foot tall, from the top of the soil, over 2 feet if you include the pots. There are many generous gardeners in here who would most likely love to help get you started. I was told that seed is safer than cuttings, as there has been some kind of disease going around with cuttings (straglebrand or something like that). I'll tell you what - once they germinate you get a brug fever like you wouldn't believe. Something about these plants that make people giddy! :)

You dont need post it here - just email it to whomever mails them to you.

man oh man kell, I just looked through the proof sheets of brugs. They are so fabulous its hard not to want them all. Here's my list so far: Cerise Wonder, Forever Morr, Fantango, Full Rosea Magic, Inca Queen, L'Amour, Luminosa, Pefektion, Pink Vista, Rubirosa, Super Spot. Did I pick some good ones?I'm sure not a good judge of plants. Now if they could sing or dance, I wouldn't care how pretty they were. I think they pose some serious competition for orchids & roses.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

Yo P, don't you have something else to do? Get off this forum ASAP & get your ass in gear... please. We are going to be LATE AGAIN!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

For nice pinks, you can get Pink Beauty, Rosamond, L'Amour, Butterfly, and many others. ForeverMorr may be released this fall depending on how she performs this summer, but even if released, she may be hard to come by. Inca Queen might be around someplace available for purchase. I believe the others are not in the states yet. Keep looking in the galleries. Bet you can find a few that would look great in your gardens.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

I really like ForeverMorr. Where will she be performing? She might not be released? Huh? Brugs have a release date just like records. Who makes the final decision & what is the criteria? Seems the ones I want is always the hardest to find.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bambi, ForeverMorr is my creation. I want to make sure she is worthy of releasing, and have genuine pictures after two seasons of bloom so that no one will be disappointed in the way she looks when she blooms for them. Even then, blooms will possibly look different in different zones, soils, etc.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

....and Brugie, please don't forget to tell everyone that there is a waiting list! and, and I am first on it!

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

She is beautiful Shirley. What a great creation! Do all plants have to go through similar trials before their general release to the public? How are they then distributed commercially? Or are they? With the exception of Snowbank, I've never seen a brug with a patent.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Hey P....great to see you here! I have a cutting that I can send you! I think you might remember it....if you don't, I know that Bambi's DH does! LOL I know, very bad subject! You sure need some beauties to look at when you get home! Hurry, get some in the ground so you can enjoy them!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

If you have room SKIRTZ, You might want to get a Big Yella.
There are a ton of them out there,Big Yella is a real grower for me.
Welcome aboard, good to see you here!
Root.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bambi, all plants don't go through similar trials. Many people release right away. This is just my preference. I know one hybridizer that has stuff that he has been growing for several years and not released yet. Most brugs are traded or given away with some growers selling them. If I liked to pack plants more, I'd sell some myself, but it is just easier to give them away and not have the worry.

Skirtz:

'Charles Grimaldi' is a beautiful golden yellow brug and he is a very reliable bloomer for me. He has beautiful serrated leaves and he smells good too!

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

I agree with Shirley's (Brugie's) choices, for good bloomers!

Welcome aboard Paula! You will love it here, we will have you fully addicted in no time at all!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I bet you have seem Charlie, Skirtz. He was hybridized in San Francisco I do believe. It is the nice Yellow you see all over.

Excellent picks on your part. And 2 of the ones you picked are the top 2 pinks in the world. Rubirosa is the pink to end all pinks if the pics are any indication. Luckily her creator is a member here on Dave's and she has shared SEEDS!!!!!! So soon a daughter in the US. She is a world renowned Brugmansia hybridizer. Monika! MONIKA!!!

My other # 1 pick from pictures also is Forever Morr. She is such a deep beauty for us girlie girls who just have gotta have PINK!!!

The thing about brugmansia is that the ones that come easily may not be the ones you need and anticipation is what it is all about. Unrequited love!

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I just remembered Vixen. Now that is a brug with sin on her mind. Oh and there is one that is from the mountain series that is hot, she is good pink. And of course Suzanne, an incredibly classy lady who must shop the big and bold woman's shops for she is a big lady! LOL.

I bet if you closed your eyes and snapped your ruby slippers together 3 times, some hot pinks may arrive at your door! LOL

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Ha, I'd choose for scent!
Also, gotta have one of each color, my choices:

KBS (peachy)
Butterfly or Rosamond (pink)
Jesse Noel (yellow)
Dr. Suess or Chas Grimaldi (yellow to orange)
Species (double white)

Of course, I have no idea what does best in southern CA, probably all, you lucky thing :)

Beverly Hills, CA

kell, i missed vixen. What is the mountain series? Bams just gave me a copy of MONIKA'S book. I'm taking it on the plane with me to make notes. Then I'll really be driving you crazy for the girlie girl pinks. Which are the most prolific bloomers? Pinks or Yellow? We found Equador Pink & Frosty Pink in 15 gallon large containers but none of the ones I picked.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I would pass on both esp if you do not plan to hybridize. I am sure Bambi can fix you up with some of the hot ones. The thing is that your brug lust should be ever changing as better brugs appear. By the end of the summer I predict the US brug world will never be the same.

There are yellow ones that bloom like crazy, like Delecie's choice, Charles. He may bloom all winter for you too! He is a charmer. My problem with him is that though he produces year after year, after a few you crave a little excitement. It is like Randy VS Simon. A little naughty can be hot.

Enjoy your book, Monika is our Queen Brug Bee!

Banning, CA(Zone 9b)

hi all, my mom has a yellow one that is a rather large tree now.. here is a pic from last year... the pic isnt that good because the camera is older but u get the idea... hers bloom pretty much all mid to late spring thru summer.. she always has to cut the tree back but hates to because its always full of blooms... lol

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Hallo Skirtz and welcome to the brugforum of davesgarden.
Kell, a bumble bee would fit better to my size lol!

Oklahoma City, OK

Hi everyone. I've been doing brugs for a month now. Guess I'm a "brug baby". To Brinda in Yukon, I'm in OKC. Do you winter them in a greenhouse? Any info about these would be much appreciated! Or steer me in the right direction please.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

rab8bit,good info all over here,I do believe you would need to bring them in,I do here in KC.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

So what ever happend to Paula? Did she ever get some brugs?

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Hello rab8bit....nice to have you here at DG! You'll love this place! I don't have a greenhouse and I'm green with envy when I hear of other's gh! LOL Last year was my first year with brugs and I kept them in the house. A few I put in the basement, but they didn't make it. :(

kell.....I think Paula and Bambi are spending the summer at Malibu!!! Geez.....must be rough! LOL

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And they didn't invite us??

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I got an invite....just can't find the time to go! LOL When I find that time Kell....I'll stop by and pick you up! Be sure you bring that gorgeous bikini....K?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I think she's afraid to post back! I've yet to see a response from her yet - that first post, up above is all I've seen. Poor girl.

I plucked my Brugs yesterday. They were looking more like a bush than a tree, so I started pulling leaves off. Guess I should venture outside and see if they are still alive, eh?

I need someone who can lift some weights for me (like a huge sofa). Rootdoctor around?

I went out singing last night and had a blast. I skipped over Paula's song again because I'm not going to be the one to destroy it.

ya'll take care. I haven't been around much in the Brug forum because my Brugs seem to be at a stand still.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Karrrie, she will post back. They are in Malibu and I'm sure they're having a blast.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Right here Karrie! Piece of Cake!!

Beverly Hills, CA

Hey Brin & All,
I couldn't log in.... I'm lost without Bam's. She's turned into Malibu Barbie & can't figure out how to use the mac at the house. She loves it so much there. Hey Karrie, Please sing any song of mine. "Sing your heart out, as if no one's listening"
That's what I do!
Guess what, I got 4 big brugs at the Malibu Nursery. I think one must be Chas Grimaldi & I have no idea who the rest are, but they smell great!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Do we have you REALLY hooked on them yet? Hope you guys will take some pictures and post them soon.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Hey SKIRTZ!! Good to see you figuring it out, Chas G. will be a great one for you.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Hey P.....I knew you were out there!!! I'm just laughing at the thought that Bambi is having a tough time with a puter! LOL Too much!!! I know you're enjoying your brugs and I also know that my Bambarino is having a blast at Malibu....LOL Malibu Barbi!!!!! Tell her I'm thinking of her and of you also! I hope everything is going well for both of you! Enjoy your summer! Luv you both! xoxoxo

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Paula, you'll get used to the Dave's Garden log-ins, and all that puter stuff soon. Visit the Computer forum once inawhile. Kimberly who is there often (Gardenwife) has lotza knowledge, as well as others. And ok - you asked for it - I'll try that "Straight Up" song next time I do it - it will be awhile, though - too much on my plate right now to contemplate going out and having a good time. You're right, too, about "sing as if noone is listening." I was taught back in highschool, when I sang in front of many people at a time to just kinda look right over their heads, not at their faces, and it works like a charm. Too much eye contact can make you nervous and self conscience. Glad to here you are selecting some Brugs! Wish mine were doing better - but I'll stick with them and keep learning. They are beautiful, smell nice, and worth the effort.

oh yeah - that "Malibu Barbie" comment was cute. lol!

Beverly Hills, CA

Hey Girls,
Let's go invade Malibu Barbie's new house. She moves in Aug 1 & I know she would love her garden pals! No boys allowed... we could have a slumber party. Brin, when the are you coming... we've been waiting! What's lol mean?
P.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hey, I am a girl. Sort of! LOL. Tell Bambi I will be there! I could play Barbie's wise older friend! LOL

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

That's weird, it says you're a new subscriber again today, Paula! Well I haven't welcomed you yet so, welcome! I'm new to brugs this year too- so I'm learning new varieties along with you. So much to look at!
Oh yea, and lol means laughing out loud.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I'm game - but not much notice, lol!

Here's a pic for ya of my neice singing Christian songs she'd learned at PreSchool. The pic was taken at the lake, thus the bruises (geeeeeez - her dad has a blood clot problem), but it was one of the most cutest, humourous sweet things I've ever seen. She had the microphone thingy (lol) going and she swayed back and forth too fast, dancing, that I had a problem getting pics.

But is she a kiss up and a sweetie! ;)
