Sherrylike, I went out yesterday to get pics, but wouldn't you know it, my batteries went dead. I have not forgotten. I place the larger pot on top of the ground. I fill it with enough potting mix, or in my case a mix of mushroom top soil and promix with a slow release fertilizer mixed in, so that when I place the smaller pot with the brug in it, it rests just below the top of the larger pot. I then fill in around the smaller pot to bring the soil level in the larger pot just below the top of the smaller pot. I usually cut extra holes in the smaller pot before planting in the larger pot, so that the roots will grow into the larger pot. In the fall when I am ready to bring the brugs inside, I remove the smaller pot by cutting off the roots that have grown into the larger pot and pruning the top branches above any "Y's". This way less space is taken up in my Gh. I have found that I usually can get by watering every 2-3 days, rather than daily. I hope this explains what I do with my special brugs.
HARD TO BELIEVE
hummer...thank you so much for explaining that! It seems like a great thing to do to give the roots extra room to grow and more fertilizer and to cut back on the watering it needs. It also makes it easier to trim the roots come winter, doesn't it.
One question, about the extra holes in the smaller pot...about how many extra holes and how big? Does it matter if they are on the bottom of the pots or on the sides?
I guess typing bump worked Sherry, got Larry here fast!
hey Larry, if I type BUMP will you come talk to me too?
I had promised to do this, but had been procastinating waiting to get pics of the pots. Sure Kell, I'll come talk to you for a 'BUMP'. I do not think it really matters where you put the extra holes, but should be at least 1/2 way down the pot. Sometimes I just make a slit starting at existing holes and going up several inches. The roots will find a way out.
Someone asked about Brugs blooming in shade. Mine bloom ok as long as they get 4-5 hrs of filtered sun daily. I do not think they would bloom in full shade, or very little.
Gee Larry this is gong to be fun. Bump Bump Bump! LOL!
I am woindering if it is the shade that gets the pinks darker. Have you noticed that Larry?
Thanks, Larry!!! Your instructions are clear and this seems like a good way for me to go with my special brugs. I know what you mean about those bat-trees, mine are never charged when I need them. If you do get photos, I would like to see them. My nursery guy gave me more pots, 15 & 20 gal and I will start potting right away. Now, I wish I had potted my new, small plants in pots about half the size of what I used, 3 gals. Your method seems like it will be a plus when taking the plants inside this fall, and like you say, they won't take up as much space. How about growth? How do your potted plants compare with your brugs in the ground?? Do you always keep your special brugs in pots or do you sometimes put them in the ground??
I appreciate your reply Larry!! It's good to hear from someone in my zone because our climate is often a doozie, ya know??!! SherryLike
My special brugs stay in pots. I could not tell you about color differences when in sun or shade as my yard is mostly filtered shade. I have very large oaks and hickory trees plus several others. It is raining again today, but maybe pics tomorrow.
Kell, a triple 'BUMP' will get you a lot of attention!!!!!!!!!!! The more bumps the better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOLLOLLOL!!!!!!!
