Dividing Clematis question

Hi all,
My friend was given a clematis that the giver called fall clematis. I suspect its a Sweet Autumn Clematis. My friend has had it for two years and has not bloomed. She wanted it to grow up the fence but it grew outward instead. She is thinking she wants to divide it and plants to dig it up and cut the growth and root system in half. Will she kill it by doing this?? I would like your help before she does. Thanks!

I just looked in my propagation book and it gave just about every way to propagate EXCEPT dividing. It says you can plant the seeds, which take 2 to 3 years to bloom, take cuttings, layer or graft.

I have mine growing up a trellis I made of strong nylon string - V-shaped. It is in a spot where it's feet stay cool, but the top gets alot of warm sun, and it loves it there. They say that clematis like their feet cool (bottom of plant shaded) but the middle and top of plant need full sun. Planting something in front of it can help with that.
