Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks Pam; I think I just didn't read earlier mail very well. I didn't see that you were sending some. I thought you were just going to give me the names to buy and where to buy. This is very kind of you. I will try very hard to give your babies a good home.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

My lack of reading skills may be related to the hours being spent wandering about planting, hauling pots to this location and that, wondering what should go where, how am I going to use all these plants (this will be replaced within a week with should have grown this or that or more of this or that); thoughts of oh my lord I remember this is a lot of work, why do I do this anyway, now I know why I don't get my horses ridden often enough, etc etc etc. Now I have digitals to look at from last year to show me what things eventually look like to give incentive every morning at 5 am. (That would be about 4 weeks before a hard frost when we start hauling all the stuff back in for the winter storage dreaming part of it all) Maybe we could investigate virtual gardening - I bet it would be easier on my arthritis, Liz' hip, and everyone's pocketbooks. LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

No problem...I took a quick look at the waterlilies last night and will get them off tomorrow (day off)! :D What you manage to do in a day amazes me no end and I know that you are incredibly busy at this time of year.

Look pam got herself a bigger pond LOL

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL....I thought of posting that our town was one big pond!!
How's the weather there now Lynn? Are the water lilies in the pond weighted, refridgerated or planted already?

This message was edited May 30, 2004 9:58 PM

If I had a camera around I'd send you a pic of the lakes in my yard. And the ditch I dug through my lawn. Enough already. We watched the larviciding truck go by spraying the ditches along the municipal road in front. Had to laugh at them spraying the ditches, but not the slough beside our driveway. I guess they close their eyes and pretend it's not there. I guess I won't worry too much about the birdbath.

Welcome back echoes....glad to see your computer is up and running. It was quite the system that passed over, we've just had two whole days with sun and I am in heaven!! :D

I agree your birdbath will only be a minor contributor of those little buggers...this summer we will be drenched in off!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

We;re all screamin' and complainin' about the amount of rain we get...then there are the water restrictions in place already, and the future possibility of water metering!!! I'll take the raain..my pastime these days has been deadheading my roses, now four times after a shower! My grand-daughter has made potpourri twice now..pretty soon she can go into business!..my kitty, Rosey, comes into my home adorned with petals all through her fur! We took a photo of her, would you believe it, sleeping on the top of one of the garden umbrellas...E.

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

I will still take some of your rain - either side of us is drowing and we're dusting - love Canada!!
PS Pam they are in the tub and have baby leaves so I haven't killed them yet. I feel like a new adoptive parent that is on probation for 6 months - should I have taken parental leave this summer - I wish.

Placed the hose in the shape of the pond for the back yard and decided I didn't like it. Am now rethinking the project which is easier before you dig I think

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It's raining here again....I'll talk to it sweetly (@#%#@&#% @*!!) and send it your way!!!!

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of them Lynn! :D

p.s. could use your help here on Monday Night :

I figured you'd round up a posse, Pam.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL!! I avoided it up til now but I know the game will be a "Miracle on Ice" for Calgary...Tampa was at the top from the beginning of the season, Calgary *HAS* to win!!!!!!! ;) Did you see the picture of the Flames puck *IN* the net...that wasn't counted???? :(

He is *NOT* getting my precious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now know how Golum felt!

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

wish i could take underwater pics with my camera pam the lilies seem to be putting out a new little leaf every day neighbours on their walks are stopping and investigating

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

They do draw attention! :) I get a kick out of teenage boys that drive down the back alley in a truck and have to stop to see which one is blooming that day. To see the hybrids, with their multitude of colors, grow here on the prairies never ceases to amaze me. I am so glad to see that you are also catching the waterbug! ;)

Do water hyacinths count????????? they look like they might be coming into bloom before long...when exactly do they set bloom?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Whenever you are lucky!! Some years I've had them bloom all summer...other years not a bloom to be seen.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

What causes them to bloom Pam?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It seems to me that in a very hot summer they do better with just morning sun. They bloomed very well in my old cement pond that had those conditions. I also would put them in a pail, that contained Miracle Gro, for a couple of hours and that made them very, very happy! (Rinse well after or you will have a lovely pea green pond to admire). Last summer mine bloomed at the end at the end of August....it was soo hot they just limped along til then (you'd think since they do so well in Florida it wouldn't matter....maybe their humidity makes a difference?!?).

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

How often do you do the pail treatment? As you can see I don't know the first thing about ponding.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I *try* to do it every 2 weeks.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Somebody here tell Liz it is called water gardening! Give them a little 15-30-15...and then place it back in...my pond is inside our patio room because of those horrible protected marauders.............racoons!! I lost two beautiful ponds to those !@#$%^&*()s! Elaine, the practicing non-water-gardener..

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL, Elaine, I know it's water gardening. Have any of you ever seen Eclipse's member page? I don't know if he's changed it but it used to be him deep wading in his pond.
Elaine, I was out at Mandeville this morning, nice looking ponds out there. Sunrize twigged me to a replacement Ear out there.

Can water hyacinths be kept very easy over winter? I got one and a water lettuce from Rona or HD and threw them in my pond(slough). Have to really look for them, they're so lonely. What about the water lilies? Are there any hardy ones? I guess you can tell I'm not much of a water gardener. My pond is just there, but the frogs love it and it keeps the roots of my birch tree happy.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Water hyacinths are very difficult to keep over the winter here. I've tried them in an aquarium in front of the window and they'll make it to March and then die (no fish). I've tried them under aquarium lights in the basement and they have died...I think the fish may have eaten their roots tho'. I think Dad told me this winter was the first that he managed to do it. It was under the aquarium lights and with small, very small, baby goldfish from last fall.

The water lilies I sent to Lynn are the hardy ones. In our zone the only way they will winter outside is to be dropped into very deep water. Their rhizomes will only survive if they are not frozen....since still slough water here can freeze 4 feet down, it isn't often an option. In the country it would be difficult to protect them...many creatures enjoy eating their stems, leaves, and rhizomes. I sent 3 to a lady in Toronto, last summer, and 2 were eaten by a raccoon. She isn't on the outskirts of the city either. If you had a pond near the house, with a dog that lives outside, you prob. could grow them without a problem. The city bought a number for a water lily pond in the downtown park....Mama duck and her little ones had a very expensive meal. :(

Thanks, that saves me wasting my money. I had some water hyacinths before and they multipied quite fast, so I think I'll just buy one every year and throw it in. Don't want any more stuff to baby. My pond is right by the house, but every critter you can think of comes in my yard to eat, dig and break things.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

It's been raining for the past two days and four more inches are expected this weekend!

SOMEBODY SEND THE ARK!!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Get used to rice Canada....it's what the prairies will be growing this year! :(

Waving a white flag here!!

Somebody up there heard you wanted to expand your pond and become the water gardening capital of Canada LOL

Pam you really have my sympathy. I know how sick of this weather you are. You keep passing it on to us. Maybe this time we'll be lucky and only get 15-30 mm, if we don't get a localized dump. The prairies - where the sun shines and warm breezes blow. I guess we have to remember, it could always be worse.
