The Brugs need a warm coat

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

I just came in from outside. As you can see, it is becoming dark.
I had to protect the Trees from the Frost, we have to expect in the next nights.
It is supposed to be only ground frost ( I hope), for that reason, I have wrapped newspaper only around the trunks. It is a cheap but very effective protection. It does not have to be removed and renewed each day, because air is able to circulate through the paper.
Our weatherreport didnt mention Frost at all yesterday, otherwise, I would have waited with the planting.

I hope they will be alright... hope it's not hard frost..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Monika, when you told me last night you were using newspaper I imagined it laying flat on top and I could not figure out how you got it to stay! I could use method that in the winter here except when it rains! You are so smart. LOL

Your hostas are amazing too! You grow everything well!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can't imagine having to do this so late in the spring. I hope everything comes out okay after the cold spell moves on. Great looking hosta plants.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

LOL Monika, they look like they are all dressed and no where to go! Seriously, I hope that the frost, if you get any, is slight.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Best of luck, Monika. Hope the frost misses you. Wish I could send you some of our ninety degree weather with all this humidity. LOL

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Monika, I do hope your brugs all survive in their ghostly attire. I can't send you any hot weather right now. Our weather has cooled dramatically since the first of the week' 80 plus, today cloudy and only up to 68 degrees, but we did receive some badly needed rain. Good luck with your frost protection. Donna

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I know how you Feel Monika, about 2 years ago ,at the end of May we had 2 nights of a killing frost,I ran around, ripped everything out of the ground, put it all on the porch, covered the porch with 2 layres of plastic...and still lost tons of plants.....it went below freezing both nites

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Monika, I wish weather could be transported and I would send you some of our near 90 degree weather. We had rain for almost 2 week and then it turned very hot and very humid. Have been fighting the bugs and fungi on my brugs and other plants. Right now I would love to trade you for some of your cooler weather.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

My friend swears by this method. Way to go Monika. Praying the temperature stays at 37 with wind chill. Wish you we could trade 90's for a few 60's. WoW it is hot here. Can't keep pots watered.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Newspaper is a great insulator and I hope it works and does not stay cold during the night for too any hours because should be ok then. I hope tomorrow night will not worse. It is a shame that this happened after you got them all planted.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I hope your brugs are fine in the morning Monika, hope the weathermen missed the prediction.
I wish I could send you some of our nice weather, it's been in the mid 80's with a light breeze and low humidity.....and no rain for over a week.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The lowest Temperatures in the night were 30F on the ground.

Whitewater, WI

Yikes, Monika.

I hope your paper coats helped out and you don't lose anything.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It did help and I will leave it on until Monday. We have to expect snow for today but just temporary. The temperatures are supposed to rise again on Monday.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

SNOW?? That is just too much! And the newspaper will protect them enough? What a disaster if they were hurt.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Monika, you must keep everything inside in the winter, or do you construct mini green houses over the larger Brugs?
I wondering just what I will do if I end up with some larger ones. I did plant a couple out in the ground, I was wondering if I cut them way back & mulch them good if they might make it. They are both in sheltered areas. I like the news paper idea, in a pinch.
Sorry you are having such cold weather.
We will wish "WARM" for you!
Bj

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Still hoping that you will get through this cold spell without damage. Who would ever think there would be temps that cold at this time of the year.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so glad that there was not damage last night and hope that you get through the next couple of days ok.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Gosh Monika! I hope everything does ok for you. Wishing you lots of warm weather!

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

The newspaper will protect them, even when it becomes wet.
Bjsbloomer, in the winter, I have to keep them inside because out temperatures may drop down to -5F.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Do youhave anywhere you can run a light bulb or a flood light? It helps keep a little warmth around plants. Here we don't get much, but we put up our tarps and burn a light bulb all winter just to have a little warmth.
My dad when I was young and lived in Pa swore in a not so bad of a freeze that If he got up before the sun and watered the whole plant leaves and all that would keep them from freezing. I guess it is the hot sun hitting on the frozen leaves and the water would warm up the leaves? Not sure if this worked. I have mulched them really high and it protected the part under the mulch.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

monika,
I feel like I need to say I am sorry if I sounded like you did not know what you were doing. I would never do a thing like that. I was only trying to be helpful. I was not implying that I knew more than you. If offended you I am apoligizing. Seems like I offended someone according to an e-mail I got. I have given them my deepest apology If I made them feel I knew more than you. Now I feel I must apologize to you. These last frosts can catch anyone off guard.
Please accept my apology.
Blessings,
Sandy

Oh my goodness Sandy.. Monika is the sweetest brugie around. Not to worry. It's late in Germany right now but I'm sure she will reply when she gets up.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Liz,
I didn't doubt that. It was the e-mail from someone else, I wanted to be sure everything was ok. I wanted to apologize
just incase anyone was hurt I would never do that on purpose. Everyone here at Dave's has been so great to me. I have never met such a great group of people and the generousity is overwhelming. My dream is to give back as much as I have received.
Blessings,
Sandy

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Gosh Sandy, like Liz said.. Monika is one of the sweetest! Theres an 8 hour time difference from mountain time to Monika. She was probably out making sure her brugs were ok, before she cuddled up with the kitties and Frank for a warm nights sleep.
I wanted to add that I have read on here about people running their sprinklers when its going to frost/freeze. I think you had a good idea.

Hallo Sandy, you didnt offend me in any way. The purpose of a forum is, that we may be able to exchange experiences and ideas. Therefore, it definiteley is not offending, when exchanging these. We know about from own experiences, sprinkling fruit trees to save them from frost but the brugs would freeze with the water, because being a tropical to subtropical plant, their cell structure is different. It will burst. You can almost compare it to a potato. When it gets frost, it is over. The only thing, that might work, are smoke pots but those days are over, that these methods are allowed. The flood light, if intensive enough, should also work but the amount of light needed, would be too expensive for me.
Sandy, dont feel bad and keep on making suggestions. I am sure, we all are going to be interested.
If I dont reply to a post not always right away, please keep in mind, that I am so many hours ahead of you and that when you get busy posting, I am already cuddling up with Frank and the kitties for a good nights sleep.

Edited for correct spelling

WEW...I am glad that is over and everyone came away with no jhurt feelings! Writing instead of talking can be hard sometimes, and can be misunderstood. So glad that it worked out OK !

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I go to bed and miss out on everything. LOL! Glad whatever this was about is all over already. Might as well say right here that we missed the bad storms last night, but not to far from Kyle they clocked winds at 106 MPH.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Oh my goodness!!! I hope, it didnt do too much damage.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Oh my .. 106 mph. I know what it looks like around here with the 99 mph winds and heavy rains we had on thursday & friday.

Harlem, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh my gosh! Thats insane!!! I hope Kyle and his plants are ok! Geez!!
I guess I didnt see anything that made me "snicker" I wanna snicker too!! Whats funny Brug Addict?
I dont think Monika has a "nursery" and like I told Sandy, even tho we have Monika on the throne she deserves, doesnt mean that she isnt open to new ideas and such. Shes just a bruggie like the rest of us, and anything to make her brugs better that she can do, Im sure she would try. The way she is, reminds me of a nurse in a nursing home that isnt affraid to wipe bums somtimes. (just a comparison..lol)

I hope everything is OK with Kyle. 106 MPH is a tree uprooter.

Kyle....Let us know how you're doing. :)

Don't worry, Sandy. We know you would never try to offend anyone. There was nothing in your posts but great ideas. If we tried them before, there's always someone who hasn't. Keep them coming. :)

lol, Shelly. I'm sure BA was just playing word association. My turn....

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Yep those late cold snaps can be a pain. Glad you had a quick fix for it.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

We still have frost. It is supposed to warm up on Wednesday.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, Monika, ot's amazing you have frost and we have 90 plus temperatures. We need to divide out temps so it won't be too cool there and not too hot here. LOL
