Ironite

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Went to HD this morning (in my raft, of course) to get Osmocote and ironite. All i saw was a spray form, that you attach to the hose. it didnt say anything about using it on plants, but said it was used for greener lawns.
is that what im supposed to use? would hate for it to just promote growth and no blooms.
it was on clearance for $5.47
thanks

Got a little nervous when i read that about the incease in bladder cancer.
I survived cervical cancer in Dec/2003 and just recently ive been diagnosed with breast cancer. Lord knows i dont need anything else to stimulate cancer growth, eh?
Makes me wonder why stores like walmart, hd and lowes dont just take the loss and take it off the shelves.

OH NO!!! I just tossed about 5 handfuls out into my yard yesterday. I rarely use it but my brugs were looking yellow. Oh if only I had read this yesterday. I am going to go out and toss my bag right now. So I wonder how do I protect myself now from what I tossed???

Thanks so much Scoot for bringing this to my attention and you too MSJen. I found this site from your post Scoot. It says home yards become toxic sites. Organic is looking better all the time.

Ol'Jerry Baker has been one of my favs for 40 years.
These are 2 formulas to be used in conjunction with each other. (but if you only use one ....NO harm will come )

~~Formula #1

1 can beer
1 c. ammonia
1 oz. liquid dish soap *lemon sent w/o degreasers or anti-bacterials*
3 Tablespoons instant tea powder

8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`8`88`8`8`8`

~~Formula # 2
2 oz. liquid fish fert.
2 oz Whiskey
1 Tablespoon instant tea powder
1 oz liquid dish soap (same as above)

Mix in a 20 Gal. hose end sprayer -fill the remainder w/water-
......Switch these every other week with you regular fert.

Now for my story I love to tell.......I got real lazy one summer and only used #
1 formula.

I tell ya, it didnt sink in for a while but my tomato plants started looking like trees, thick trunk like stems and heavy branching , SOO DARK GREEN and ariel roots all over.
........... It's mostly the Nitrogen from the ammonia that greens it up, beer is a good plant food. Tea and soap combat BUGZ!

=))

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

scooter...do you pour this mixture on the ground or spray it on the foliage?

Did your tomatoes also get tomatoes or just good stem and foliage?

Can the tea powder be the flavored kind?

Orange Park, FL(Zone 8b)

Thanks Scooterbug for sharing the links with us. I'm a JB fan too!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Went to the website, says golfcourses use ironrite a lot!

Very interesting reading. We live by a golfcourse, also have a well, so........can ironrite/arsnic seep into deep ground well, which we drink from? Arrggghhhh Quick! Call a Dr. or a Nurse!!

............. guess you missed this part, it was a pretty long post =))

@@@ --- Mix in a 20 Gal. hose end sprayer -fill the remainder w/water-

Plain tea. I always buy the cheapest soap, tea and beer

20 gal. hose end sprayers are around $3 at Walmart or KMart. I have a few labeled for different uses.

scooter...yep, you are right it is in your post as clear as day! Thanks! I must have skipped over the middle of your post...I did read the beginning and the end!! : )
I am trying to clean today and come back and take a DG break every once in awhile! That is what I get for trying to short change my DG time!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well I am still confused! You can use a hose end sprayer for watering the ground or for foliar feed. So Scoot............ do you do both?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I soak the plants foliage to the point of runoff

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I just came across this web site and thought others might appreciate it. It depicts various amendments and what they are used for:

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What a great link Gretchen!!! Does anyone know how to copy a file that is in the acrobat reader form?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The only thing I know to do is to print it Kell.
I am so glad I didn't buy that big bag or Ironite at Walmart the other day! It was good that no one was there to help me lift the bag! I have been using liquid chelated iron(made by Southern Ag Products), guess that's what I'll keep using.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I saved it as a PDF File. As long as you have Reader, you can re-open it. Its got a lot of good information.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I've always used chelated iron. It doesn't smell real good, but easy to mix and use.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

That's what I used when I fed them. Its made by Green Light and has a few other things in it. I mixed it in with my other stuff and within a few days WOW! What a difference it made.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I have been using for years on all my plants with no problems. I even mix in a good handful when potting up my brugs. I guess if you use to much it might hurt them. I also mix the spray type with the liquid fertilizer a couple times a summer. I saw the other day they have a new one with minerals added

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Donna, the Ironite won't hurt the brugs, it's you it will hurt. Ironite has lead and arsenic in it that builds up in your soil and will leach into your water.
Chelated iron doesn't have lead and arsenic in it, or iron made by a company other than the Ironite company if I read that file correctly.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Does anyone know a brand name for the chelated iron?? I don't want to make another purchase error. What in the heck should I do with this bag of Ironite?? Take it back to WalMart????

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sherry, here is where I got mine. You can surely buy it cheaper someplace else, but I was ordering at the time and just went ahead and got it.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I went to walmart 2 night ago looking for the chelated iron and couldnt find it. the salesclerk looked at me like i was nuts and directed me to the vitamin aisle, lol.
any help in finding it would be appreciated. i bought a bag of epsom salt and sprinkled some of that on tonight.
thanks
jen

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

You're going to have to get it from a garden center. Home Depot probably sells it. I bought Green Light brand which also has other micros included. Hope that helps! Gretchen :)

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

it does, thank you

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Jen, try a farm store or nursery supply. They should carry Southern Ag products down that way too. It comes in gallons, maybe even a smaller size.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Brugie, 8 oz of the chelated iron doesn't seem like much. Do you use it every time you water, like the Ironite is supposed to be used???

Scooter, for various reasons, I don't like to sparay my plants in the heat of the summer, mosquitoes for one thing, and when it is really hot the water can scorch leaves. So, I like the Ironite because you can use it in the water bucket. Is there a Jerry Baker recipe for use in a water bucket, rather than a sprayer??? I'd like to alternate the chelated iron and an organic recipe, which I used until I lost my JB book in a fire...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I had no idea you were supposed to use iron with every watering. I would think it would become toxic but what do I know! I am so l glad I did not know that now. I would just toss a handful under a yellowing tree once a year if that.

Iron is very toxic to humans in fairly low doses. Children can die from ingesting iron pills.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I only use it when I see some yellowing on the leaves...not every time I water, Sherry.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

............Iron should be used very sparingly , you can over dose too easy causing toxicity to your plants and living creatures . Be sure your yellow plants NEED iron before using .

............Many other causes for yellowing leaves. Especially with brug growers always striving for Organic Planting mediums. When you use Organic Mixes, the materials used decompose and rob Nitrogen so I would add some regularly. Liquid Fish Fert ( Foliar or water-can) or Blood Meal is good natural source of N.

I hope you know not to spray anything on plants in the heat of the afternoon like between 10 AM & 4 PM

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Scooter - my DH wants to know if you put the beer in the mix or if you drink it while making the mix (ha ha ha).

and as an answer to the question about the arsenic seeping into their well water - yep - I think it would eventually make it's way down there - what a scary thought.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Karrie, Ya need to be careful and for yer plants safety do test one o the cans of beer outta the sixer first to make sure ya got a good batch .............hahahaha
Sounds like yer DH is a Thinking Man fer sure .

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Duh, my Ironite says, and I quote: "For best results, use Ironite EACH time you water." I've never used it before the last couple of weeks and I'm taking my bag back to Lowes!!! Ugh, it did green up my rescue brug, the results are unbelievable!! [deleted] if you do, [deleted] if you don't...I'll go with the chelated and see what happens...

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

SherryLike: you'll like the chelated better as its more readily absorbed and used by the plants.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thank you SOOOOO much Gretchen!!! Shoot, I would have gotten it in the first place, if I had only known, ya know, whew!!! I've never used any of this stuff until recently. I will say that the one time I used the liquid Ironite, it made an obvious difference. Now, I don't know what to do with the sack I bought. I think I'll take it back to Lowe's and let them worry about it, since it's never been opened...I surely will NOT use it!!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was at HD today looking for the safer type of iron (they did not have it) and checked out the bag of Ironite since I was there.

It says use twice a years on your plants. However the Ironite PLUS is the liquid form and it is actually fertilizer with a littlel iron in it. It says use with each watering. Mystery solved!!
