I can't believe how dark the bloom is on the first day! One of my other bloomed pale yellow the first day and gradually darkened. Is it normal to have such a dark bloom once they're in the ground?
First day of another Frosty bloom
Gretchen, did you bring the rain home with you? LOL! Frosty looks great. The color looks good. As for why it might be darker, I could only guess that the nutrients in your soil might be helping. I think my brugs in my garden bloom nicer color than the ones in the soilless mix.
Welcome back Gretchen. Looks like you got some welcome home blooms!
Thanks you two! I don't know what's going on with this weather!!! My grass needs desperately to be mowed and its just pouring here... And yes, all of my pink brug cutting are loaded with buds and in a couple of days, lots of blooms (I hope). My coral and Dr. Suess all have buds too. They must be happy with all this wet weather -- in a few days they all turned a much darker green then before I left town.
I hear the weather is odd in lots of places. Snow storm in Colorado!!
I can't wait to see your coral, not sure I remember that one! Are you going to cross pollinate any?
Kell -- I don't think I know enough about their history to cross pollinate at this point. Plus, other than my seedlings, I only have common brugs. I have lots of bees, so maybe I'll end up with a surprise. The coral is Insignis Coral, and from the pics I've been able to find, its a deep salmon color, which is my favorite flower color, so I have high hopes for this one, and its in a place of honor in my garden -- first one at the beginning of my front walk from the driveway. Its from a grower in Louisiana.
Edited to correct where this one came from. I did not buy this from Nestor, it came from Katz Kuntry Kuttins...

Gretchen, your blossom is wonderful, I love pink, any form or fashion?? I know exactly what you mean about the weather, it has been raining (monsoons!) for about three weeks. It finally quit last night late. So, my new garden, is not only water logged, there was a boggy low place, right on the first canal, that has kept some of the front plants under water, most all of the time it rains. Well, today was the day, no rain, kinda cool and the ground is still soft and I dug a canal around the muddy stuff and I'm going back to fill in even more. The old canal was were the decoy is. The storms knocked off several blossoms and buds, as well as branches. I potted everything I could.
Now that I've dug the new bed line, I will put the blooming tree in a big pot, to give it some height and get it outta the low spot and so I will be able to move it if the sun is too much. I hope this is a before photo and that I'll have something special to photo when the project is complete. Any suggestions for plants, et al, will be sincerely appreciated. SherryLike
SherryLike: you've had a busy morning - I love your garden! There are many times that I wish I had a solid fence such as yours to use as a boundary. Maybe one of these days in another place. It wouldn't work here. I'm really beginning to wonder if this rain will ever end. We just go from one extreme to the other!
Edited to add -- thank you!!!

A border of low growing elephant ears would look great and you could just flood the canal to water them or leave them sitting in water. Looks like a great looking flower bed.
Thanks Gretchen!! I looked up your home page - your Yorkie is pretty cute and so are you!! I envy your pink Frosty - all of my blossoms, so far, except, Dr Suess, turn to road line yellow/orange. My Dr Suess is a sweet, lively yellow. I've seen so much of the harsh yellow that I'm looking forward to my 'whitie' blooming. BTW, you are in zone 8b, did you winter any of your brugs outside, last winter, and, if so, how did they do??? SLike
Sherry,if you plan on keeping Brugs in the ground, overwinter,I am not sure if a low spot is the place for it.
I like your picture above, itshows you are suffering from one of the first signs of Brugaddiction,Mowitus, you will notice your grass areas disappearing!
I am an Ear-a-holic,no question what I would be planting, your garden is going to look great!Root.
Tanks, re the garden Shirley!! Of course I LOVE elephant ears, especially the Up Rights. But my Upees grow entirely too big and regardless of where I'd put them in this garden, they would be too over powering. In fact, I have 6 foot wood fences every place and my Upees grow so big and tall that they are quite visible over the fence. Oooooops, it's started raining again, a real down pour, with more wind, I just cannot believe it, whew. I must run bring the dogs inside before they are soaked - I've already bathed and blown them dry and I don't want to have to do it again....
SherryLike: I'm a newbie...mine are all either cuttings that I received and started in my GH in January (30 named cultivars) or seedlings (50-60) that I started in January. I do plan on leaving them in the ground except for the versicolors. I plan to take cuttings of my favorites and overwinter them in the GH, just in case they don't come back. I will be surprised if they don't come back, though.
Your first picture sure looks like Isabelle, what a gorgeous Brug!
What a nice post, Root, thank yew! I will pot the tree brug, and bring it in this winter because it will die back if left in the ground, and I assume that if it survived that it would grow back with branches, that's a question, I'd like to maintain the single trunk. Yes, Root, I've had chronic, acute Mowitus for many years and have learned that it's terminal. I would rather tend a one acre flower garden than mow an acre with no barriers. I really like mowing but I hate knowing I have to do it, ya know??!!
LOL,My grass disappears sometimes daily! Sorry Kaufman.did not mean a Hijack on your thread,LOL!
I'm with y'all on the mowitus! Little, by little I'm whittling away at mine.
Root, you jump on in anytime :) I also have four Isabellas, none of which have bloomed yet, but this one did come with a Frosty label on it. (I have three, two purchased and one a gift from another DG member, also loaded with buds). I went back out and re-counted. This particular one has three blooms and 11 more buds. Anyway, I have been unable to tell the difference between Isabella and Frosty from the pics I've seen.
so pretty Gretchen, what a nice homecoming!
Gretchen, it sounds like you have a wonderful start. How did you get started, this list?? I don't know a single person in my area that has a brug, except my nursery man, who kept two he couldn't sell. He tells me his are in FULL sun all day, he never feeds them and left them out all winter without mulch. I told him he was a lucky guy. I plan to leave the majority of mine out this winter, but they will be mulched and I'll take cuttings, like you say, just in case. Frankly, I'd think the sun here in south Arky would be harder on them than the cold. BTW, is your green house connected to your house?? I have one that I use to groom my dogs, on really cold days. How do you heat your green house??? SherryLike
These monsoons are giving me cabin fever, boy do I need to be in the yard...
I lost all my pictures at my last Puter BBQ,I remember my Issy having that nice ring of pink the first day.
Gretchen -
Nice to see you around again! I think we have twins in our 'Frosty Pink' Brug! Pretty, pretty.
Looks great Gretchen! Congratulations on the blooms!
I have to agree with the weather! My word! lol I kept all the brugs out this time with the snow. So far, so good. We do need that moisture here tho.
SherryLike: My Greenhouse is an el-cheapo portable that we bought last summer strictly for Spring Seed starting and to overwinter a few potted plants. We wanted to see how much I'd use one before investing a chunk of change. Well, it received constant use! So much so that the door zipper broke and the company replaced the whole cover, no questions asked.
I got into brugs from this forum. Bought the bulk of them, and then received two wonderful assortments from a couple of very generous people here at the Brug Forum. All cuttings. Then, when I joined BGI I was eligible to grow some of their seed bank seeds which are from other members that hybridize. The only ones that are available commercially in this area are generic un-named varieties.
I am with you, Candy! I just can't imagine that I could like any brug more than these Frosties!
LadySwan: Thank you -- it was!
Shelly: You can have all my moisture LOL -- we have just had too much lately! I just mowed less than a week ago, and the grass is almost knee high again, and too wet to mow!!!

Sherry...looks to me like your new flower bed needs some daylilies!!! Did you see Cal_Sues picture of daylilies with a white brug behind it on Candy's post ?! It looks really nice!!!
She's a real beauty Gretchen. Always been a favorite of mine.
I am exhausted, you may call me, SherryLikeTheWhine tonight, ONLY!! Can you say HUMID, thunder, more rain, muddy, dreary, wet dogs??????? If so, you may join me and I'll give you fresh quacamole, home grown cilantro, sp, and a very light V & T, with old fashioned mint and a twist of lime, because it's a school night, ya know??!!!
Thanks, Donna! I really do love her.
Very Pretty bloom, I want a bloom... whine!
Shelly, did you say you kept your Brugs out all winter? You are in zone 5b? I was under the impression I had to bring all of these inside in the winter.... I'm zone 7-8 maybe I'll be able to just plant them out & mulch.??? Geeze, so much to learn!
Bj
Oh no, I didnt keep them out all winter... just this past storm. It got to 32 degrees, and snowflakes so big and wet it felt like you were getting hit in the face with water balloons. :o)
Here's somthing to think about tho... http://davesgarden.com/t/429723
Great pictures Gretchen!
Thanks Pam! Not nearly so good as yours, though :)
Thanks Dee! Can't hold a candle to yours though!!!
