Can I do this safely? This is really the best location we have for some of the ones which are still in pots. They won't be right up against the base of the tree but a few feet away. I don't want to risk killing them.

Sensitive to Juglone (Poison in Black Walnuts)
These plants are known to be very sensitive to juglones. They will usually be severely affected or killed.
Trees and Shrubs
Azaleas and Rhododendrons
Birch
Hackberries
Lindens (Basswood)
Pines
Potentilla
Fruits and Vegetables
Blackberries
Cucumbers
Domestic Grapes
Green Peppers
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Well, I ended up planting it in a large pot with all imported soil. I do pray this works for us as this is the idea spot for it otherwise.
In the Fall just pick out all the leaves from the pot so they don't decomposs and add the poison to the potting soil.
Good Luck!
(I personally love blk walnut trees...and the nuts)
BTW, don't ever think you can plant a juglone sensitive plant anywhere near a walnut. Their roots - and the juglone - can go as far as 80 feet from the tree.
I found out the hard way last summer when I tried to cheat and planted a couple of roses about 50 feet away from the walnuts in my backyard. Surely THIS is far enough, right? Both are deader than doorknobs.
