Gosh Ada. That is too bad. I'm having a similar problem with my new cat. She seems to think the rapid rooters are something to play with. LOL!
Rockwool ?????
I've threatened to tie her until I get all my seeds and seedlings planted and she hates to be confined but I hate losing so many seedlings also. LOL
Ada:
Have you heard of Liquid Fence? They make a deer repellent that I have been using successfully since early last year, and I just recently found that they make a pet repellent. I have an old Golden Retriever that refuses to leave my beds alone. He likes to get in bhind the plants and burrow up against the house. I have chicken wire everywhere to keep him out (he weighs over 100 lbs). anyway, I'm going to try some of it to see if it will repel him, when I get around to ordering it.

Might be worth a try...
So sorry about your seedlings!!!
Good morning, Kaufmann, et al!!! I would buy liquid fence in a flash; however, they say the spray for deer/rabbits is a repellant. For dogs and cats, it says, training aid. I've tried several repellants for dogs and they haven't stopped the digging, so I'm reluctant to buy the liquid fnece. If any of you have tried this product and it works for you, please advise. SLike
I have a couple tricks to stop dogs digging holes.
If a dog digs in the same holes and seems to revisit them as if they were looking for prey. Get some hot chili powder or a cayene(spelling before coffee is a lost cause) pepper powder and place it in the holes they revisit. When they stick there noses in that old hole and sniff a nose full of powdered pepper, they'll sneeze and carry in like mad for a few minutes. They have great memories and will associate holes w/ that nasty burning feeling. If it works on my hardhead blue heeler's, it'll stop any dog. They also sell a product called "bitter apple" at pet stores. You spray that on anything they like chewing on or around and you should get similar results. For rodents and others, they make garlic oil emmittor's at nurseries. Most animals hate that a lot too.
My wife has our dogs trained to where they know what is and isn't a garden bed. We bordered all our beds in lil fence and field stone. they know they can't cross those lines w/o hearing momma say "get out of my garden!" and they just cower off. My male won't even get in the garden to get a ball or frisbee. He'll sit at the border and whine then chase you down until you get it out for him. The only thing we haven't broken him of is attacking the vacuum cleaner and I have a lot to do w/ that.LOL I just love teasing momma and the dog plays right along with me;P.
Goodluck, Jeff
Thanks, Gretchen. I may have to give it a try.
JLD, I used the cayenne pepper last year to keep the rabbits from eating some of my plants. Haven't tried it for the dogs yet. I may have to drag it out and try it.
Heya friends.
I have a stupid Q since I'm a Brug rookie. Will seedlings that are now over 1 month old bloom in its first summer or will I have to wait till next year? I assume it will bloom the same year its planted but I need to be positive as I'm giving a few away as Mother's day presents. I know all my dat seedlings will be flowering in a couple months tops.
Usually I'm really excited about newly bred hybrids but so far this year its been a sad spring for them. The germ rates on what I thought would of been the best brugs of the bunch is the worst germ rates I've ever seen. I have maybe 5% of the 100 or so seedlings come up looking ok, the others didn't come up at all. There are some that did pop up only to turn into contortionists and curl up and maybe dying. This is happening to brugs and dats sadly. Oh well, tis the nature of hybrids...You either get a super hybrid, a plant that doesn't look like a hybrid ie. looking like 1 of its parent's, or you get [deleted]. From most all of my other breeding experiences, I ended up with great plants with awesome "hybrid vigor".
I just needed to vent that out...I have a whole flat full of almost nothing and its making me look and feel bad.LOL WAAAH WAAH. I'm not giving up on them just yet.
Thanks, JD
OH BTW
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!!! tO ALL YOU MOM'S OUT THERE!
Just incase I don't get a chance to say it on sunday.
Jeff, thanks for the wishes. By the way, don't throw your pots of seeds away just yet. I've had them come up from one week to six months. I wouldn't count on the seedlings to bloom this year, but you might get lucky.
Jeff, switch to rockwool!! LOL. I am so bad. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Just joshing you!
Oh you are bad! I've been biting my tongue bigtime on some of these discussions and I will continue for now. We're all entitled to our opinions etc. even if some are dead wrong!LOL
I'm not going to throw anything out, I never do. I too have had so many seeds pop up at the craziest times. Some of my passiflora's can take 1 week up to 1 year to germinate. Those seed cases are harder than steel!LOL
adios
I guess I'll ask this question here, but it has zero to do with the thread, except it is regarding a brug. I bought a brug a couple of weeks ago, I call it my rescue brug, I bought it from a man selling them on the side of a road, in a pickup, it has a tag that says 'white', and that's all. Brought it home and you could really tell it have been knocked around. Within a couple of days of primping and grooming in the spa and breakfast in bed, including Ironize, SuperThrive and 30-30-30, 'white' looks really good and has buds, oh happy day!! However, 'white' goes limp almost every afternoon, even in full shade. I water, then 'white' is fine. But, I started trying to figure out what is missing in 'white's' life and here is what I think: Might need to be put in the ground, or a larger container, because his pot has very little soil and the roots are showing on top. If I put him in a larger pot, what size should I use and will moving 'white' after putting on buds cause more problems?? I read a thread Monika or Kell posted about re-potting, but I cannot locate the thread. What do you guys think I should do??? TIA!! SherryLike
Well Jeff, you must admoit you did ask for that big time. LOL
Sherry, repot it up in a big container. It is spring and it can take being moved up to a much bigger one. I am going now from 4 inch to a 5 gallon. Skipping my 1 gallon ones unless brug is not vigorous.
Or plant in grorund. though I would be wary of buying beaten up brugs on side of road for you do not know if has diseases. Unless of course a double pink then I would chance it! LOL
Kell posted: though I would be wary of buying beaten up brugs on side of road for you do not know if has diseases.
Funny thing about that. Before I became totally entrenched in brugs, I noticed that there was considerable chat re virus & disease, this I noticed last fall. So, I 'quarantine' each new plant, not only brugs, but all the plants and check them for bugs and disease and, I wash the plants and spray with the alcohol/water/soap. So far, all I've seen is a couple of ants.
So, I'm thinking about potting 'white', at least until I see what my other plants are going to do, and, if it doesn't help the wilting, I can still move it around. Thanks, Kell - I've looked again and 'white' doesn't seem to have much soil at all. Should I cut away any of the root, but it appears to be a really healthy plant, now that it's being fed, watered and loved...SLike
This is an awful photo, but a two fer, so I'm sending it. The Dr Suess JT sent me is on top of the stump, blooming just as happily as you please, can you believe that??? I'm pretty excited, 'preen'!!! The other blooming plant is the yellow tree that I purchased. Before too long, I'm going to dig it up because I will take it inside this winter and it's too short the way it is. My son said, wow, that's a super plant and it smells great, but you would have to lay down on your back to see the blossoms. If I haven't told you already, a kid and a dog will make a fool outta you every time, huh???

LOL Kell. I admit I have earned all the abuse and teasing I get and then some! I'm about as onery as they come but I'm actually all smiles and quite easy going. I have a bad habit of opening my mouth before enguaging my brain as my dad puts it. I think I've been stricken down with a bad illness that may not have a cure. It's called "Acute Dumbassness" and I've been trying to shake it for more years than I can count. I've yet to find a medication that helps but my wife figured out that a backhanded slap can do wonders, I think it just makes her feel better;) LOLOL. I hope I haven't alienated anyone or made any enemies. If I have, I apologize as I know its my fault even though I don't know what I've done. So don't ever be afraid to put me in my place, I get lost often.
Have a great weekend and Mother's Day all.
Jeff
OMG....."Acute Dumbassness"...that is the same thing that my DH has! LOLOLOL
Hey Jeff we are all friends here so do not be so hard on your self! What would we have to talk about if we all said the exact same things?
We all enjoy you here and you sure add a lot of good information to our chat!
I would say my DH has AD also but he has been a doll today helping me repot a huge brug and we did it with no loss of buds or pod! Usually he is so mean to them they look like a tornado hit them when he is done!
LMAO Thankyou Kell but I'm not being hard on myself actually. I'm just razzin' myself as I do my friends and family;). I guess you don't know me well enough yet, I'm a thick skinned, thick skulled, outspoken meathead and I can admit that. I was just buttering everyone up just incase;) LOL
Its all good baby;). As long as everyone is smiling and having fun, I'mma happy man.
Well off to see the Mom's.
JD
