While looking back over older posts, I ran across someone having a pottery collection & someone else saying that once an addictive person, your addiction will have other avenues also. So what are your other addictions? What else do you collect, in numbers, the general public would feel is excessive?
I'll start. I collect daylilies. I started in the summer of 2002. I bought about 6, then added a couple....then got on to a forum and joined the National association, then the local. Met people and they gave me some more, bought some more, found the auctions, bought some more, traded for some more and now almost 2 years later....have 170 ! (and counting!)
Just this year I am also getting interested in iris, hosta and brugs & the numbers are growing already!
I woke up the other morning and thought to myself, now why did I need more than the 3 brugs I started with in March? And then I thought, if I can be happy with 3, I can be so much happier even with 9 ! And so it is beginning again. Thankfully my addictions are healthy, happy ones....
OK, fess up...tell us about yourself and what you collect! If it is only brugs...when did you start with them and how many do you have? what else? Come on...we won't think it is abnormal whatever it is. We will understand!
OK...admit it ! What other addictions do you have?
Oh, where do I start? Rex Begonias, African Violets, Irises (all kinds) Daylilies, Tropicals, and of course Brugmanisas.
We gardeners must have obsessive compulsive personality disorder:-)
Vickey
I collect Hoyas mainly but since searching out some brugs for my mom and viewing everyones great photos here, makes me want more of my own. So far, I've only got one...but the itch is there. I love tropicals and just started a collection of Cannas. I've got five named varieties so far and hope to be able to trade in the fall for others.
Gemila
Addictions??? Not me lol. I have 15 different elephant ears, a bromelaid collection, a tropical vines collection, 20 or so different echeverias, a ginger collection and at one time I had 2000 daylilies and at least a hundred different hosta plus a good sized salvia collection. My friend is trying to tempt me with hoyas, but I'm resisting so far.
oh yeah, and 115 different brugmansias!
Calalily...a gal after my own heart ! Now I feel too good, compared to you...I think I'd better buy some more brugs! I was hoping this would happen!!! You just made my day!!
I like bulbs, all kinds, but don't have much sun so it's a constant hunt to find the right ones. I would have more irises if I had more land, but my daughter is doing irises big time and hope to have a iris business one day. She has sold a few on ebay so far.......
Besides my brugs, I collect weeds. It is an easy collection and generally they are free for the taking. It isn't hard to cut back as long as the hoe is handy, however if you want them to multiply, you need do no hard work at all. They are a wonderful addition to our three acres when we have a drought because they always stay green and generally flower. Aside from those, I do have elephant ears and some other tropicals and this year I am into Morning Glories.
Ummmm, HOUSEPLANTS! My boyfriend is in a band that has practice here a couple of nights a week. They look forward to seeing if the "Jungle of Love", or so they call it, in the living room has grown. I am now currently into Passiflora. It's my first attempt at flowering things in general. I have 4, purchased within weeks of eachother. Aloe 4, Caladiums 3, I love Clover, Cactus 7, Jade 2, Philod. 2(but one is taking over the room) english Ivy, fittonia's, Wandering Jews, various succlnts 4, as well as the garden veggies that I've started in here. I have a problem, lol, but at least I'm willing to admit it! Plant therepy is the best therepy in the world. Mere:)
Brugie, I too have a collection of weeds!
Husbands.... although they are alll ex's now ;)
Husbands ??? OK...how many??? any current or all ex'x?
Have you found any time to collect other things or have you been too busy?
Very pretty David.
No single variety addiction....just gardening in general I suppose you'd say.
As for my addictive collections I have only two I guess.
I collect bear paraphernalia (teddy bears, ceramics, odd unusual 'bear' stuff) and Star Trek memorabilia (I'm VERY picky about my ST collectables....has to be rare and unusual)
Not to hard to now understand my DG nickname :-)
RikerBear
Marc
I collect hoya's and Brugmansia's. And of course I like just about every other plant in the Universe.
Patricia
Brumansias, salvias, hostas(less than a yr, but my newest passion), alacasia, colocasia, gingers, amaryllis, hydrangeas, bananas, hibiscus. Oh, weeds of all sorts. I am going to collect hyacinths starting this fall. I think I have no yard left. The only other thing I would like to collect would be unique Jap. Maples. I have a few but would love more. Oh, I forgot, abutilons. I just love them. Do I like to garden, 'NO', but I sure do like my plants & weeds. Maybe if I plant a few more plants & trees, the weeds will go away!!!!!!
Just starting on brugs.I collect Orchids, roses,Hibiscus and Jap. maples so far.
My 3 plant passions/addictions are Brugmansia, gingers and aroids-especially colocasia, alocasia and xanthosoma. Since I also buy and sell antiques- I collect murano glass, blue ridge pottery dinnerware, phoenix bird cinnerware, pottery jardiniers and pedestals. I am embarressed to continue listing my obsessions.
My main addiction is ANYTHING fragrant, so that covers me on a multitude of sins, lol.
Brugmansias, Bamboo, Bananas, Cannas, Cactus, Epiphylums, and just starting to collect Hoyas, cotton material for quilting.. and have lots of weeds too. There are lots of other things in my house that are weird.. had over 40 wooden Breadboxes (put my supplies in them) and finally they took over one whole room, so out they went.. my grandchildren had to have a place to sleep..lol. during their vacation. Wont' say more..
Hydrangea...129 of 'em and counting.
Tracey :)
Tracey, I didn't know there were so many of them....do you have a link, please...not that I need another addiction! But they must be beautiful !
Besides Brugs, I love anything that blooms. I have about 30 Clematis vines, Roses, Aroids, Hostas, Hibiscus both hardy and tropical, Iris, Daylily, Gingers, Phlox, tropical vines and so on. Too many to name then all. LOL
Oops...I didn't mean I have that many varieties, just that many plants.
I only have 15 +/- varieties because I'm trying to keep my garden all white, but a few blue/lavender and red hydrangeas have found there way in because of my addiction to them.
Tracey
I collect bells. I couldn't tell you how many I have since most are packed up in the attic. I've been collecting since I was 16 .... a lot of years. I got into daylilys and canna's last year and now Brugs ... lol ... and have always gotten one of any plant I thought, could not do without :)
I'm sure I have many addictions....(plants and flowers, that is) but right now my only addiction is L'Amour! LOL I'm following it closely.
Oy Vay! I didn't know this was they fess-up day, but here goes...
Hello, my name is Joan and I'm an addict.

Bearfoot bears figurines
ceramic chicken figurines (especially the old ones)

...and soon to be added to this list is QUILTING! My niece and I are going to make quilts for everyone in the family out of the material my Mom had in her home when she passed away. Never quilted before, but I'm sure it will become an addiction, so I'm adding it to the list ahead of the addiction. (I know me!!)
Oh, and I smoke and like to have a beer at Miller Time.
Me besides brugs I started collecting Salvia's( about 20 varieties so far), shrimp plants(8 different kinds so far), firespikes( red, pink, purple, and Varigated), turks cap( lg red, sm red, pink, and varigated red), and clerodendrums( 9 different so far) and another on the way, ruellias(5 kinds so far) and I am also addicted to cigarettes, wildlife watching and photography.
I love vintage items. I have an extensive collection of bakelite, Marygold prints, R. Atkinson Fox prints, not enough brass hendryx bird cages, Fenton cranberry opalescent vintage glass, Tykie bakelite toys and I hate to admit but even more!
My other big love are flowering plants. Right now I am obsessed with roses, brugs, bulbs, amaryllis and coleus. I am flirting with MGs.
My addictions include but are not limited to: (LOL)
Amber Tiara Exclusives Dinnerware
Star Wars--the movies and memorabilia
Milk glass
African textiles
Brugmansia
Plumeria
Other flowering plants
Plant sales
Plant nurseries
Chocolate
Books--gardening, home decorating & improvement
Cross brooches
Yard sales, garage sales, thrift shops, antique shops
The Home Depot
WOW, you guys did good with this question. As I went though your lists, I realized I had forgotten the dolls & and fabric bags & cotton quilting fabrics and the books...especially cooking, gardening and self-help. I don't seem to need to self-help anymore now that have added gardening to my addictions! That tells you something, doesn't it!! Also taking photos, especially of flowers & grandchildren. Oh, and I almost forgot a BIG one...the computer and the forums and photoshop and e-mail and the internet!
You guys did really well that were able to list all your addictions in one post! I am sure I will think of more as time goes by! Feel free to add onto your lists too!
Good to see we have so many varied addictions & collections! We are good for the economy !!! Keep collecting!
I have few questions...kell, what is MG's
and what are hoyas?
Oh please add me too...lol.
I collect Angels statues & figurines mostly for the garden room, various old Books, water fountains and of course my beloved Critters.:)
The plants I seem to have the most of are tropical or house plants . Philodendrons,Bromeliads,African Violets and of course the newest addiction is Brugs, but I only have about 20 of those so I don't know if you can really say it's an addiction yet.lol
It all seems to blend together nicely and our friends say we should charge admission...lol.
What a Great thread...
MsCritterkeeper
I feel like I'm in good company.
Ahemmm.....did I hear there was a new forum for obsessive/compulsive gatherers of objects de jardin and other "fanatic" type behaviors?
picturelady might have been referring to me in her original post re:pottery.....or perhaps I'm just feeling especially guilty about my addictions today. :-) Yep, I collect vintage dinnerware and have enough dishes to open a medium size restaurant and not have to wash dishes 'til morning. :-)
And I also love plants.....loved plants and gardening before I could afford to indulge in dishes and still love them. I collect lots of succulents, roses, odd ball plants, California natives. Standing at around 900 varieties as we speak, but many of them are one of a kind succulents in my greenhouse so it's not so bad. Right.
Also collect Hummels, vintage copper, mixing bowls from the 20's-30's, books to supliment my dinnerware and gardening habits.....also collect a lot of trash - to -treasures kind of found objects, not exactly antiques, more "collectibles." To my family a lot of it is just plain trash.
Also love photography and my digital camera, which has saved me from forever being a little out of focus. For those of us who like instant gratification a digital camera is a most enabling piece of equipment.
That can't be all, but gotta go and clean my house which is severely in need of help due to my "I'd rather be in the garden attitudes."
Fun topic and I can't wait to meet picturelady on Saturday, sounds like she might be a true kindred spirit!

Addictions: I'm loaded, whew!! I've dabbled in lots of stuff. I was a stay at home mom until our youngest was in Jr high, then went to work with my hubby for about 25 years, taught myself word processing and to do legal work, I can do every thing except try a case. My specialty is determining the merits of lawsuits. Our son joined the firm when he finished law school and had four kiddos, including a set of twin girls.
When our office burned 2 years ago, and I sorta moved home to manage the office since we are networked and it works great and I am free to do stuff I enjoy, like manual labor, which I love and consider it and the off shoots, addictions. I'm the maintance man and I have one employee, Honeyshoe, and between the two of us, we can do about anything, from, well you name it, repair plumbing, change the oil in the cars, wallpaper, have a sit down dinner party, maintain the pool, cut trees, etc. We live in a family compound, with 6 houses and it seems that there is hardly a week that we don't have a project. Today, I'm adding central heat/air to my barn, which is where we all spend considerable time.
Sorry about that post leaving without being concluded. I guess this is part two:
My addictions include:

We really enjoy the Up Right Elephant Ears, shrimp plants, begonias, caladiums, sweet peas, moon flowers, morning glory, jasmine, I tend to like stuff that does well for me and there are just some things I cannot grow. We do a vegetable garden too and my hubby and his mom work it. Boy, I do go on and on and I know I've left out lots of stuff. Sorry this was a double feature. SLike
