Thanks Ada -- I'll keep them coming as longs as they are worthy LOL!
I must be crazy...
Oh, they'll be worthy. So have your camera ready. LOL
Is there a continuation to this thread??? I was getting ready to see some brugs in bloom!
Just finished re-reading this thread and the portable GH thread. Again, Gretchen you are one truely amazing gal!
Gretchen has shown quite a few pictures of all her brugs in bloom. She has had amazing luck with them growing and blooming. She's not bigger than a minute, but must have the energy of an atomic bomb. LOL
minigrannie...yes I did see some posted in other places, but I guess what I was missing was the plantings along her drive...searching futher I found some of them over on the greenhouse forum, taken in July!
I know, she amazes me with her creativity and energy!
I, too, agree, Margie, and minigrannie!! And, Gretchen is so helpful and willing to share her knowledge...DG really has some very nice, generous subscribers...
WOW...that's the one I was missing!!! :
WOW...that's the one I was missing!!! :
Twice it cut off the rest of my message...it was...
WOW...that's the one I was missing!!! Really beautiful !! They really grew in one season!
BTW...have a wonderful trip with your brug babies. Sounds like something I would do, bring them along in my RV !!!

Oh Gretchen, they are looking wonderful! I can't remember for sure, but you are leaving them in the ground right?
They sure look nice Gretchen.
Thank you all so much -- a labor of love as we all know :)
Margie -- they are! We leave our RV at the coast during the summer and they will ride in the truck with me and then I'll find a shady place for them upon arrival LOL! These are some really special seeds, and I don't want to chance them being left alone...
Candy -- how is your new place coming? Were you able to finalize your deal? I hope everything is happening as hoped for and on schedule!!! And yes, all that you see here will stay in the ground. There are only a few that I'm going to take cuttings of (famous last words) for myself, and otherwise I'm just hoping they decide to grace me with their presence next year. The ones along the drive may end up being replaced with pinks, though.
Shirley -- bless you! They have a long way to go...
Apparently, you are moving, Candy, huh??? Your place and your plants are so wonderful, where you are - if this is happening, I cannot wait to see your new place!!!
Gretchen...I spent another day checking out GH's...and not 5 min. ago came to the decision to get the domhaus like yours. ACF was the very best price for it too & the sales person that I spoke to was very helpful and pleasant. So, it looks like I will be a GH owner now, too. Now I need to get to work and make a level area and line it with weed barrier and decide on a material to lay on top of it.
I saw some really nice shelves at HD for $40. 36W x 54H x 14D....metal wire type, very heavy. Do you think they will be deep enough?
I am so happy that my brugs will have a warmer place to spend the winter!
Have a really good trip! You are not headed toward the hurricane are you? I will miss you, so please let us know when you get back!!
Also, do you have plans for your work table? Thanks so much, if you have time to e-mail them!
Margie
Gretchen, your drive and front walk are lovely. You've done a fine job on them.
Linda
The land deal is progressing, albeit slowly. Our 45 day contingency runs out Wed and we will be signing off on that. Closing should be next week. I am under self-controlled "slow down" mode. The septic issues have been solved, the civil engineers are still working out the grading plans, but because this process has been so involved the grading can't be done until next April 15th at the earliest. Because of issues with winter rain and ground movement no grading of raw land can be done between October 15 and April 15......with the work yet to be done on plans and permits we aren't going to make the cutoff date.
We are well along with the plans for the house with the architect.......but I am giving myself plenty of time since I have all winter to plan and dream. Once the plans are set it only takes about 3 weeks for the permits. So I'm still drawing and redrawing plans for the house......the general plan for the garden has been done for weeks!! I'm itching to get started, but am limited to beginning to propogate things to take with me.
Sherry - yep we are moving toward the country, in the process of buying 3 acres and plan to sell the big house here in the spring of 2006....that sounds so far away, but is only about 19 months from now!! Here's a thread about the land: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/448023/
Margie - LOL I just asked on another thread if you'd made a GH decision! Are the shelves you are looking at the black or white or stainless heavy wire mesh ones? If they are like mine, I got them at a BigKMart and the larger/taller ones were $40. They work great and can be taken apart to reconfigure the shelves as your needs change. I also remove some of the shelves at the top during the summer when things might burn closer to the roof of the GH. They work great!!
Congrats on your GH, Margie! You will love it!!!
The shelves will probably be fine. You saw the pictures of mine. I used the cheapest thing I could find from Wally-World and they worked perfectly for me. I'm going to be removing some of mine this fall to make more floor space room, and I'm not doing any seeds other than brug seedlings. So, it'll just be my brugs and tropicals.
As for the bench... no plans... I had helped DH throw together a work bench the week before I built this, so I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but believe it or not I just bought the amount of wood I thought I'd need and began sawing pieces and screwing them together. It was just dumb luck that it turned out to be a functional bench. And, it is! I'm happy to report that it is extremely sturdy and very usable.
The legs are 4"x4", the rest is 2"x4" with a 1"x4" board which goes around the top, outside edge to cover the rough edges of the hardware cloth... I can't remember the dimensions off the top of my head, but I think its 36" high, 5' long, and 40" deep, with a shelf below, close to the floor.
Linda -- thank you! Like I told Shirley earlier...its still got a long way to go. I want big PINK brugs lining the driveway next summer, and I don't think I'll have any along the walk. There will be a new brug bed on the east side of the house... trials, errors, dreams and plans...
Candy -- that's so exciting! I'm happy for you that its starting to come together!!! Please keep us updated on the progress :)
I think you are crazy and I wish I was crazy like that too. But I am confused about one thing. If you are in zone 8b, won't you get frost? I'm surprised you are planting them this late.....
Woodspirit: These were planted last April. Another member asked for updated pictures. The updates are a few posts up. And yes they will freeze, but hopefully they'll return in the Spring.
Lookin' Good Gretchen! :-)
Karrie
Man, oh, man, I am thrilled for you Candy, wowsers!!! Before I forget, I will tell you to make sure you have exits with your wall, do NOT fence yourself out. Three acres seems large to 'normal' people, but gardners are 'different', ya know??!! I am so happy for you, I sensed your interest in more garden, etc, space, but I didn't expect your move so soon. This is just wonderful news, I am SOOOOO happy for you!!!! Now, I must tell you that I am so impressed that your daughter is a vet, you are so fortunate!!! I tried talking all of mine into going to vet school, and I failed. I will continue the effort with my grands. I have 7, surely one will take me up on my offer. Please keep us posted, this is so much fun, thank you so much for including us in your exciting endeavor!!!! Good luck, Candy, I cannot wait to hear more...Sherry
Gretchen, that is going to be gorgeous! Sounds like your husband's place needed a woman's touch. Hey let me rephrase that because there are alot of women that wouldn't do the laundry much less all that yard work.... I'll rephrase....Your husband's place needed YOUR touch and that's exactly what it's got! great job! Sandra
Beautiful Gretchen. You have done a great job landscaping!!
Just beautiful. I love the house, too. As for missing the dates, welllll, will you come visit me in the home?
Gretchen, everything looks just beautifull. You've worked hard this summer and it shows. Looks like a magazine, take lots of pictures.
Thank you all!!! You're way too kind...its just a house and yard, and probably pretty goofy looking to have all these tropicals growing in the Texas Hill Country. But, oh well! I'm having fun growing it all... I put the greenhouse up yesterday, (the cover ripped and had to be replaced), and today will be spent digging up a few favorite seedlings. Then next week, hopefully cuttings of the named brugs. I have to figure out what is going to fit in there this year.......Thank you so much!!! Gretchen
You wouldn't believe all the work Gretchen has done this Spring and Summer in her yard. I'd like to get some of her energy elixer. If she could bottle it and sell, she could get rich. lol

I can't seem to get my fingers to say what my brain is thinking today. Oh heck, let's be honest, Sylvia, it's not just today.

Sylvia -- you are too sweet! Thank you!!! Believe me, its been a little slower pace the last couple of weeks. Am getting ready to dig up my favs and fire up the GH. Then once the weather gets cool enough that the snakes aren't active, I'll begin to collect and move rocks which will be used to outline the new beds I've planned. When you garden in this part of the world (at least the way I do...) there is something to keep you busy all year round. I'm glad y'all have enjoyed my thread :) Gretchen
Gretchen, what kind of snakes do you have? I need to warn Amy to watch the girls.
Sylvia -- we have lot's of snakes. I have several that reside in my flower beds, but they are the beneficial kind. So I won't kill them. Here is a list I found of all snakes in Comal County as of 1998 -- WOW! There are a bunch!!!

Thank the Lord, I didn't marry a Texan, and it was a close call!! I'm scared absolutely to death of snakes!!
We had copperheads and coral snakes when we lived in the country and I had very close calls with both. That's one of the nice things about moving back to town - no critters by possums and raccoons. lol
I forgot to say that Amy thinks they don't have any snakes. I better tell her better, since they are building right across the road from you. I sure would hate for one of the girls to step on a rattler.
Awesome Gretchen! I wish Brugs were hardy here so I could plant them outdoors year-round.
Thanks, Wy! I hope that these will come back in the Spring. Lots of cuttings and seeds just in case :)
Gretchen
