Brug Seeds or Plants

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Is there an online outlet for brug seeds and, or plants??? Can the plants be sent by mail?? If you 'ordered' a brug, which one would you order?? If I ordered a plant, or planted seeds, would the plant bloom this year??? TIA!! SherryLike

Sherry: There are many places that you can buy plants and seeds. Several members here sell both:

Hope this is helpful...Gretchen

Looking at the zone you are in, you have a chance of getting blooms from seeds, but it might be late this fall. If you get plants, they should bloom this year, no problem. If I were going to order a plant and was just getting started with brugs, I would order Butterfly, Golden Lady, or Rosamond. All are very pretty and Butterfly and Golden Lady smell great. If you want yellow, I would get Whiskers, Jessie Noel, Dr. Suess, or Becca Lynn. Jean Pasko is pretty, but has shorter tendrils. I guess I've never seen an ugly brug, so just about anything you order, you will be happy with, I'm sure.

Thanks to all!!! I tried all three sites Gretchen posted but, the last two aren't up and running and the first one has some beautiful photos (no better than the ones I've seen from all of you), but there were not prices and I couldn't order until June. In the meantime I found this site re Google: http://valleygrow.safeshopper.com/faq.htm?7029 The owners name is 'Earl' and I made every attempt to order and I'm hoping Earl posts me back with the total, including postage, so that I can pay him via PayPal, which I really like, if it works out. Earl is in FL and this really works well for me because all of my plants are from FL and they work really well in my area. I ordered seeds, an assortment, and several starter plants, including Ember Glow, Brugmansia X Harrenhauser Garten, Dr Seuss, Shredded White Fantacy and a few others that I've forgotten. Oh, yes, I did get the Jean Pasko, before I read Shirley's post. Earl, the FL plant man, says he grows his brugs in FULL sun to full shade. Full sun in FL is even hotter than here in Arky. I've got a huge yard but I'm not sure where I can put these plants so that I can take care of them more easily, and for our viewing pleasure. So, I'll have my thinking cap on, I'm looking so forward to their arrival. BTW, I tried to order pretty and easy to grow. Do my choices sound okay??? If you have ever ordered, were you pleased with the plants???? TIA SherryLike

I just tried all the links and they are all working. I ordered from Earl one time and his brugs are okay. I had one that wasn't what it was supposed to be and he was very good to replace it at his expense.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Sherry: I wondered the same thing as far as sun exposure. I was told that if I left them as container plants I could move them around to determine what they were happiest with. Well, they are going to be planted in the ground this week, and I have a pretty good idea of which ones will do okay in which areas. I will only have three planted with no protection from the sun. It gets so very hot here. I have ten that will be planted with only dappled sun, and the rest will receive morning sun. If they don't do well with this arrangement, I'll figure out something else, LOL! Gretchen

Shirley posted: I just tried all the links and they are all working.

I'm sorry, I didn't make that clear, the bottom two aren't selling anything right now, and the top one has them but they are not priced. Of course, since I can only very seldom find them in my area, I want to order plants and seeds now, when I assume it will be easier to get both going. Yes, all three links are in working order, but not ready to send out plants, from what I could figure out. SLike

Sorry Sherry, I misunderstood. Hopefully you will be able to get some nice plants from one of the sellers real soon. I've got to go take a look at Mary's site. Not sure I've ever been there before.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Mary, great looking site. Looks like you are really going to have a selection before long. I enjoyed browsing around.

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

Mary,

Your site is wonderful.

One thing I couldn't find were shipping rates.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Mary:
Beautiful site! I have to spend a little more time there when I have it to spare. Sorry I didn't include you above, but I honestly didn't know :-O Gretchen

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

MaryInLA: I love your site!!! I'm a LA girl, born in the Quarter and have family all in that general area, Mandeville, Covington, Enon, Franklinton, etc. What I would like to do is have you ship me some starter plants and seeds. I would like for you to make the selections. I like color & easy to grow. I'm in zone 8b and would love to hear from you!!! I'm really excited. If it is okay with you, why don't we do this 'out loud' with this group, so if there are other newbies, like me, that they could see what we do, and we can report back here as thngs progress. Are you game??? SherryLike
PS - this is SOOOOO much fun!!!!!

Well, aren't you cute!!! This could be fun, huh?? I'm such a newbie that I'd love to do this, so that other newbies might be able to pick up quicker that I have been able to do. I'm most grateful to *Shirley* and Monika and all of you for making me feel at home, despite the fact that I'm green as new grass!!! Thanks, all!!! SherryLike

Well Sherry you are welcome here. We were all newbies at one time. We will help you all we can.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Tree_Climber posted that there are no shipping rates on MaryInLA's site. Of course I've just started investigating internet purchase of brug starter plants & seeds, but none of the sites I've visited have the shipping rates posted. Earl's site did not have them, but it looks like that's a bust anyway, no response. So, I cannot wait to hear from MaryInLA. I'm in or near Mandeville fairly often and I'm planning a trip rather soon and it is possible that I might be able to see her brugs in the flesh. However, I'm taking my 88 1/2 year daddy & my 80 year aunt, so time will tell...

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Sherry, I purchased a Brug from Mary and was pleased with the plant I received.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Thanks everybody.

Sorry, been busy this morning.

The shipping rates will show up when you add something to your cart. It is done automatically and interfaces with the USPS for the rates.

Sherry, you have already ordered some plants from Earl, so don't want to duplicate what you have from him. You should get some good plants, have heard good things about his brugs. What did you get from him? I don't have any seeds right now.

Are you sure your zone in Arkansas is 8B? This map shows extreme southern arkansas being 8. http://www.growit.com/bin/USDAZoneMaps.exe?MyState=AR

My suggestion would be, if you are a new grower, to get some of the more common but cheaper ones to start with and see how you do, and then go from there. Brugie suggested some lovely ones to start with. I see you ordered Dr. Seuss, which is a real good easy one to grow. The Herrenhauser Garten is a more temperamental brug. Jean Pasco should do good for you. I know they are common and some people will groan at my suggestion, but good old Frosty Pink, and other suaveolens are good starter plants, grow easily, root easily, bloom well, etc.

Are you planning on trying to grow these in the ground or in pots and bring them in during the winter?

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

It says on Marys' site, that she ships priority mail. Don't know if this is included in cost of plant or, $3.85 under a pound, Priority?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hi-biscus,
...........You will find that most of us ship plants via Priority Mail. For a few cents more it is well worth it , as PM keeps on moving until it reaches it's destination. This is what I was told at my PO.
;-P

Edit....Another good thing about P.M. is the supplies(boxes, tape & labels)are free from the PO ,brought to your door too =)

scooterbug thanks for that information. It is a good thing for a newbie (like myself to know). Not like I have anything to send but I hope to in the future!

I've been working in the yard the last couple of days, because the rain finally stopped. MaryInLA re my zone. It was not listed correctly and I've changed it to 8a re the Dave's Garden zone map, there was no 8, without A or B; however, the USDA zone map lists me in zone 8 (no A or B). I 'think' I sit right on the border of 7 & 8. Also, I think Shirley mentioned 'dragging the water hose' - I suppose you all have tried them, but I've been using coil water hoses for about 5 years and I cannot get along without them, I'm spoiled. They are pricey, about $30.00 for 50 feet, but if you look around I think there are cheaper ones.

Well, it's been a couple of days or so since I posted Earl, the FL nursery man, no response, so, I'm ready to move on and, when it is convenient, MaryInLA, I'd love to order some plants - I LOVE your www site and your plants are beautiful!! I'm off to take my aunt to therapy (broken arm) and will chat again when I return. Thanks ever so much!!!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sherry, I wonder what kind of mess I'd have if I put about 4 of those coil type hoses together to reach most of my stuff. I'll bet I'd have the biggest puzzle to undo that I've ever seen. I've been tempted to get one for watering in the house though. I get a little tired of carrying water to every room and several trips too.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I tried the coil hose and didn't really like it, you can't wind it up on a hose reel very well when you are through, lol.

Sorry you haven't heard from Earl, I am sure he is just very busy, as most of us are this time of year with planting, potting up, etc.

Shirley posted: Sherry, I wonder what kind of mess I'd have if I put about 4 of those coil type hoses together to reach most of my stuff. I'll bet I'd have the biggest puzzle to undo that I've ever seen.

I have 50 foot hose and I have 5 positioned around the plants & dogs. My dogs swim every day and I rinse them before they come inside. So, my hose does double duty, what time I'm not with my dogs, I'm with my plants. BTW, I get the lighter weight coils that you can see through, blue, green, or clear. I bought one in dark green that I could not see through and it was way to heavy to lug around all summer, I would have gone back to regular hose. But, I'm afraid that if you hooked up two or three 50 foots that it would be mighty heavy to pull around, at least when it was filled - without water, you might be fine. I have tangled mine, but it never happens unless someone else uses it and I have seven grands & their pals in the cement pond all summer...honestly, I will never go back to regular water hose!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I purchased one and wasn't happy with the water flow thru it and returned it.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

I had the same problem Ada, Took forever just to fill a bucket in the kennels =(

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Scooterbug, I have too much to water to have to worry with the coiled ones. LOL I be out there two days just trying to water.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sherry, I just looked at your homepage. What a cute little puppy. Now you can start posting pictures on here. This is even easier that putting them on the homepage.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I'm with you all on the coiled hoses - we have one that we keep in the horse trailer for shows, and I think its more trouble than its worth. I have to drag around 200 feet every day in the hot weather, and I used to have a reel, but it broke a couple of weeks ago, so I'm saving my pennies for one of the professional models that's on four tires, kind of like a cart. Sam's had them last year for $50. but not this year. you can order them but then get killed on the shipping.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Oh, poo!! You guys are just like my dog pals, except they wouldn't even try a coil. So, I gave them one for a gift, the 25 foot. Well, guess what, they love them!!! Maybe you have to groom dogs before you learn to like them. Thing is, the hose has to be clear (you can see the water in the hose) and it has to be light, but not 'cheap'. Oh, well, ya can't win 'em all, huh??!!

Big news: I have three blossoms giving birth as we speak. I cannot wait. They are supposed to be 'orange', but I have no idea what kind of plant it is. Lots of you call your plants 'her'. Is there actually a boy plant and a girl plant, like Japanese Yews??? If so, how do I know if I have a boy or girl. As soon as these babies arrive, I'll send a photo and hope that you guys can identify it for me. Later...

Maybe when the blossoms open, I'll get a better understanding. Whatever, I'm off and running thanks to you!!! SherryLkeTheWine

I think I refer to almost all of them my "her" except for Charles Grimaldi....pretty hard to call that one a her, and Dr. Suess is another I refer to by "he" I also call Herrenhauser Garten a "he", but that is just me....not the rule.

How about Pink Floyd?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Was Jean Pasco a man or a woman? I've always wondered that, but never remember to ask.

Right....I didn't think about Big Yella. I don't have Pink Floyd anymore so didn't think of him either.

Oh No! There is a Brug named Pink Floyd?????
I HAVE to have that one....I am a hugh Pink Floyd fan.
Oh dear this new addiction is gonna be SO costly...in many ways I fear :-)
