Air conditioning

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I am so surprised re: cost of add-on air conditioning. We converted from old heat pump (electric heat) to gas Jan 02. $2-3000 is what I have been told for the add-on cost. Does anyone have one of those portable air conditioners? Not the window type. Are you happy with it? And, why does add-on AC cost so much when the duct work etc is already set up? Warm weather never bothered me when I was young. But that has all changed.

That's about what I was quoted to add AC to my house (1400 square feet) using the existing ductwork. The new heat pumps (the AC units) are heavily regulated because of changing hydrocarbon emission regulations. However, they are super-efficient, too.

Some of the cost is in the outside unit, and some is for an inside unit plus all the insulated piping for the coolant line. I was given a choice of 2 units. One used the coolant that's been the accepted replacement for freon for several years. The more expensive used the new coolant that will be mandatory in just a few more years. The first unit could not be retro-fitted, either.

I looked into those portable units about 2-3 years ago but the area they cool is limited, and they are not very efficient. (You can move them from room to room, though.) Plus, AC's draw out moisture from the air and it has to go somewhere. The portable units use LOTS of electricity to run.
