Keeping the Bat Alive

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Lesson: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." This was my 1 surviving Bat. I decided to re-pot to a mix that would have better drainage.

found that it was putting out new roots.

It did not like being bothered. The basic care that I've found on different web-sites is:

Medium to low lignt, never direct sun.
Likes moisture and humidity but not mist on the leaves and no draft or wind.
Likes acid pH

Hope this one makes it. It's my only survivor of 12.

My three survivors of six are putting out really nice leaves now- half the secret must be to accept they have a LONG dormancy and nothing can rush that; can't give up and think they are dead.

I keep my younger Tacca in my GH and the larger ones on the deck in shade.....taccas seem to thrive in heat, as long as the air is humid. Sue my GH stays hot also, I think as long as the tacca are not crowded, kept in the shade with humidity the heat won't bother them...just be sure to keep the soil moist,(not wet, don't overwater!), and keep the rhizome from being completely buried in the soil...it will rot otherwise~Jenny I repot my tacca into Mircacle Grow, I use the seed starting soil for starting seeds.
The guidelines I follow: don't plant too deep, keep shaded (No direct sun), protect from drafts and wind, during warm months keep moist, {colder months let the soil slightly dry out before watering}, don't over fertilize, give them elbow room...hope this helps~ Debra~

Okay will go ahead and put them in there. Humidity levels are good in there. I checked one of the rhizomes today and it has new growth! They are currently under a big hydrangea in complete shade. It has been really hot here. I have not fert. them yet but will give them a shot of peters fert tomorrow. Thanks Debra!

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Debra! I'll put mine in a shaded place. It is getting a little morning sun (not here lately with the rain). I think I will pull a little of the top soil off since it might be too deep. Jenny

Well, I think my last survivor has croaked. They just turn to mush.

Just planted some Tacca Seeds.......

Bought them from The Seed Rack online........
I will be soaking them for 24 hours starting tonight, and then putting them in a soiless seed mix.....

RedSundance, if my seeds are old, and do not work for me, would you be willing to part with some, whenever your seeds are available? Let me know.

I will try and keep my progress posted up.....
