trying to reason with hurricane season

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

hurricane season just started for us on june 1st. There is something in the Gulf of Mexico right now that is *very* tropical. Weather folks are saying it will come in about 30 miles from us, bringing lots of wind and rain...*lots of rain*...did I say I needed rain???lol! are you ready Bud??? hope this is not a sign of what the season will be like :) Lisa

Wow, Lisa, sorry to hear this. :(

Are you going to stay there or evacuate? How long till it gets there?

Dave

When it rains it pours.....right Lisa. You have the hurricanes and we have the tornado's......neither one are any good. Just be careful and tie down the hatch..

You should be getting quite a bit of this rain. The eye is passing over us in Galveston, which puts you on the 'wet' side of this storm. We've had about 2-3" of rain in the last 4 hours. As dry as it's been here, the ground should soak up alot of it. Our main concern is the bayou overflowing, but if this thing will move fast enough, we should be OK.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

good to hear that boomer! I hope yall are okay and she just moves on over. We are getting our first "feeder ban" right now. New Orleans has really gotten plenty rain already. I don't know how we dodged it so for..but wow, is it coming down now. We are having squalls ...I hope Allison just gives us enough rain and moves on through! Dave, it should not be bad enough for us to leave.(i hope ) Lisa

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

North florida... we have had more rain here in the last four hours than we have had in the last 6 months! still raining, not complaining. but it has been years since i have seen this much water standing in the yard...florida sand, totally drains 15 minutes after it is through raining.
it is kinda fast for the first tropical storm!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

hey folks, I am still here...just soggy!! the rain is much needed here. Not much high winds, just lots of heavy rain. It rained all night. Lisa

Good to hear you made it through alright Lisa. Hang in there. By the way...hubby has some hip-hugger boots for you if you need em. Sounds like you may.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Hey Lisa - after having almost 10 days of solid rain here I think you now know what I was talking about. Take care of yourself :-)

Middle, TN(Zone 6b)

Glad to know that you are ok Lisa. Guess the chickens didn't have to practice their swimming techniques this year and the alligators won't be eating them for dinner quite yet.

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

hi lisa
whatever you do, don't send the hurricane this way!:)

mm
rained down here last friday, tue., and forecasted to rain again today, we'll see.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

We're getting a touch of your rain right now Lisa. It's moved into the Ohio/Tn TN River Valley about an hour ago.Just rain tho...and we are still accepting all we get.No flooding and I'm quite sure that we'll need it before the summer's out.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Lisa: Is your garden okay?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Hey Lisa,

I'm here in New Iberia, La. Glad the rain is here, my yard is flooded. Overall we need the rain though. My only concern is that we started having problems with our house buckling on the outside since the last rain. We were going to fix it this week, and of course Allison came. Oh well. We'll all survive. This is my first day in dave's garden. Having a ball.

Phyllis

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Hey Phyllis! nice to meet you! I am in New Iberia alot! I know your area well. Take care!! All is lost on my end. Hope yall make out better. Lisa

(Zone 9a)

Lisa
Did you get flooded bad? All is lost??? I'm sure sorry to hear that. We fared OK. A few trees downed in the area, but just dead limbs on my place. We maybe got 5" rain (I'm guessing), but Houston got hit pretty hard as it stalled over them. Some neighborhoods there got 12-15". What rain we got soaked right into the parched ground.
I appreciate the rain, but I can do without those storms, especially when they pop up on the 'back porch' in a matter of hours! Oh well, at least the rain barrels are full.
Best wishes Lisa--I'm thinking about you. Paula

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Paula, We've had about 10+ inches since yesterday. I should have used better words!LOL My garden is lost. But we are all okay. My yard looks like a lake and is a little over ankle deep. The bayou behind the house is rising! Yikes, better round up the cats...gators will be on the prowl. Lisa

(Zone 9a)

So sorry to hear about your gardens. I know you were so excited about the Farmers Market and can imagine how disappointed you're feeling. And I see from my local weather radar that La. is STILL getting lots of rain. Hoping some good comes from all this for you. Paula

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

It will Paula...thanks! You know, i am lucky compared to most around here. So that in itself is good :) and I can always plant again in the fall..Lisa

hmmmm, wish I had a funny hurricane story. I have been through about 10 of them starting with Hurricane Hazel in 1954. My family had homes and businesses on Wrightsville Beach, off Wilmington, NC. Wrightsville is hardly more than a sandspit, only 2 blocks wide at the southern end and about 3 or 4 blocks wide at thr northern end. Packed with homes the entire 2 mile length. I have seen inlets opened and closed by hurricanes. I have seen boards driven right through trees. Whole houses sitting out in the marshes. My Uncle's motel signs where posted over 2 miles apart and were found together. I dug sand out of the first floor of the Lumina, a fabulous old beach pavilion from the early 1900's for days. Even huge pilings from the fishing pier breaking loose and driving into the Lumina could not bring it down.
And not one of my family ever lost a home or business. We were blessed.

Consolation to Lisa- one of the rain lilies you sent me as a bonus had its first beautiful pink bloom today. It is lovely. The fact that it is a rain lily that I got from you makes me think God had something to do with it and that I should tell you. I pray the damage won't be as extensive as you fear.
