Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't know how to spell it!
LOL

This is one I got from Poppysue a few years ago.Its about 3 feet tall now and I have to trim it ,its kinda scraggly, any suggestions on the best way,is it easy to root?

Does anyone have any other colors they want to trade for some cuttings of it?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Is that a seedling? I didn't save any of mine. I never had any luck getting Ichroma to root. They just rotted for me.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I wish I had some to try again and maybe I did order from Kartuz. Can't remember since I've made so many orders. I had pretty good luck rooting them in wet sand in the shade a couple of years ago.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Brugie, you sound like me. LOL I've ordered so much this year. I probably ordered two of some of the plants because I can't keep up with all I've ordered. My poor plastic is really getting a workout this Spring. LOL

CC, mine is scraggly also. I was afraid to cut on it last year but from the looks of it. I should have done some trim work on it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I would whack on them now so when they start the new growth, it will be lower and won't be as leggy looking. Good time to try taking some cuttings too. I have a tropical impatien that I ordered from Kartuz last year in the summer and I had to whack on it a couple of weeks ago. I put the cuttings in soil and most of them are rooted now. Two of them croaked, but that wasn't bad for me.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Brugie, when I can get to them in the greenhouse, I'll try to cut them back some but right now, there's no hope of getting to them until after this cold snap. I've never heard of a tropical impatien. I bet it's pretty.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Ada, check this out. This impatien is awesome. Liz is why I now have one. I bought this one and the variegated one from Kartuz and I got another one, but haven't seen it bloom yet. I think it is red/white. http://davesgarden.com/fp.php?pid=535723

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, I'd have never dreamed that was an Impatien. It's beautiful. Oh Lordy, where's my plastic? LOL

You got a variegated cockatoo Shirley? Is there a picture on his site?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I saw the blooms on this, while I was at Shirleys, and they are amazing!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

CC, Kell sent me 2 iochromas last summer, I absolutely love them. Wine red and a purple something. They stayed in the gh all winter because I wasn't sure just how hardy they are. I love the big clusters of blooms. I love the blue of yours, or is that purple?

Whitewater, WI

CC, I love it!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I think that one of CC's is the same as you have Liz. I love that impatien Brugie. I am glad I am leaving home soon. I have been so tempted to buy so many plants this month! But dare not give my husband more to kill.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

CC, Looks like you have Iochroma Grandiflora. They don't root as easily as brugs, I get about 50% to root in the spring/summer when it is warm, won't root at all in cooler weather for me. All of mine are setting seed, though, and they germinate easily. Don't know if they will grow true from seed.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Okay Brugie, it's all your fault. LOL I ordered from Karutz's last night. They still haven't sent the other order I sent them and here I am already ordering again.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry Ada, but you will enjoy your new plants, I can guarantee you of that. You are just as addicted as I am. Be sure to post pictures of your new babies when they bloom.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

LOL Addicted??? You are so right, Brugie. I have a bad case of it and no cure in sight.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

I ordered these iocroma from Kartuz last year. I have about 4 different plants. 2 are planted under brugs & barely visable. What would be a good combination plant for them? Also, I can't seem to get them to grow straight!

Mine grew too big and were too floppy. I had a great stalk that was thick and I thought I could get a standard out of it but the sucker growth was nonstop on it. I finally had to say goodbye! My yard is too small and there were other things I prefer more.

I had a terrible time rooting them until I bagged them, then it was so easy. I rooted tons.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Your Impatiens is beautiful Liz! But there is no more room in my shack LOL!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

So if I root it I should bag it ,huh?
In vermiculite?Perilite?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I did it just like I do brugs CC. If you need me to, I will send you my directions if I can find them. I used fast draining soil.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

CC, the little side shoots root easier than any other part of the plant. I used vermiculite, and Kell's bag method.
Mary, I have a pod! It's like a yellow gumball now, is it ready to pick?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

So sad. One of the ones Kell sent me last year has bit the dust. Just did not come back, I dodn't know what happened to it, one came back, the other didn't, and they are large too.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Liz, maybe it will still come back. Was it planted outside?

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

My pods looked like little berries, and I left them on the plant until they pretty much fell off when I touched them and felt kinda soft, they stayed on quite a long time.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Is the purple/blue Ichroma a brug???? I would LOVE to have blue or purple!!!!! SLike

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

I don't think so Calla, I scraped the bark on the stem and didn't see green. It was in a large pot in the gh all winter, blooming too.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh Liz, what happened? Did it just die all of a sudden?
Sherry, these are not brugs, but are in the solanaceae(did I spell that right?) family, the same as brugs.
Mary, my pod looks like a yellow berry. I'll keep a check on it in case it falls off.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Kell, if you have a few minutes, I would love to receive your cuttings information.
It certainly will be nice to start out doing things right for a change!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Me too!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

It took me a minute but I finally found it. I can't believe how much info I have stored on brugs!

Here is method I use quite a lot and find it works for me. You may want to try one your way and one this way of each variety just to see what works best for you. Good luck, Kell

TO ROOT A CUTTING!
Esp a green one which can be harder to root than the woody stem. If you received by mail and even if it is wilted,
rinse entire cutting in lukewarm water, gently shake drier.

If cutting is very wilted when you recieve it,
1. wet entire cutting,
2. shake gently to dry a little,
4. cut off a sliver off the bottom
5. place in cup of water and
6 enclose all in a bag that you have wet the inside of and drained.
7. Leave for a day until leaves rehydrate, then proceed to place in dirt as follows.

Cut a sliver of the stem off the bottom to get a fresh uptake of water. Place in lukewarm water as you prepare pot.

Take 4 inch pot and fill with your potting soil.

Water it well and drain it. Make hole in dirt to accommodate cutting diameter. Can do so with a pencil by making stirring motion to enlarge hole.

Take cutting from water, and dip in rooting hormone.

Place cutting in hole in wet soil. Push soil tight to the cutting.

DO NOT WATER!!!!!

Take a plastic bag and rinse with water, drain well. You just want the inside to have some water beading but not dripping. Place pot with cutting in bottom of bag.
Blow into bag opening as you have it clasped almost closed in your hands. This will puff it out and keep the sides away from leaves.

This will inflate bag.

Twist close bag tightly. I find Velcro strips close it well and you can open and reclose easily.

Place in light place but NO DIRECT SUN!!! I keep mine either inside or under a tree outside. Keep in luke warm place so does not steam cook the cutting. Can leave like this for several weeks. When you feel it is OK to open bag, keep bag around pot so if it wilts you can lift bag back up and blow into it and close for a while more!

Do not water until the spoil is dry! Here I never water when it is inside the bag for the soil does not dry out within the bag.

You have made a mini greenhouse!

When you finally do take it out, make sure you do not over water. If you must do something, mist leaves daily without wetting the soil. They like that esp. in the beginning when they first come out of the humid bag.

More cuttings die from over watering than under watering!

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

The overwatering advice has been my downfall! I have dutifully watered all my Daphne cuttings daily -- the idea of not watering after rooting makes good sense, because I washed all the Rootone off!
I'll try again!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Kell, do you have anything on setting a pod??? You can bet I'll be saving TO ROOT A CUTTING. Thanks!! SLike

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You mean pollinating? I love Cala's little pages she did for all of us for quick and easy reference on lots of brug topics. Susie has been a good teacher of mine! I remember when I could not figure out how to peel a seed and she slowly went over and over it with me. She finally gave up and peeled me seeds and sent them! LOL. What a good friend! Hey Susie girl, remember that? LOL

You can always find this page if you go to member's stores on the side bar here at Dave's and go to Cala's Tropicals
http://calastropicals.com/module/store/vbc/621/

then Click to View her Brugmanisa 101 pages. They are so easy yet very informative. She made them just for us here at Dave's.
http://calastropicals.com/content/page1.html

then go to the Pollination page
http://calastropicals.com/content/page3.html

thanks Susie!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh MY!!! I just tried out my links to see if they worked and when I got to Cala's Tropicals I looked down the list of the seeds she has for sale. She has some from brugs I do not have and the crosses sound too good. Oh, I must not order any....say that to myself 100 times.

And she has Rosamond X Rothkirch seeds for sale. Now these seeds are rare for few people have RK and now with NH closed for now, no one else will be getting it for awhile. And it is so hard to root. I have heard of no one rooting them successfully!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thank you for the detailed rooting directions Kell, I will be copying them for my notebook! :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well the truth is, with brugs, you can just stick the brug piece in dirt and it usually roots. This method is for hard to root ones and I also like to do it when I do not want to be bothered with them. I stick them under a tree and forget about them.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Kell posted: You mean pollinating?

Well, yes, I guess that is what I mean. Do you pollinate a plant, and if the plant 'takes', the plant will grow a seed pod???? If so, how long after the plant is pollinated does the pod form??? I haven't had a chance to read the sites you provided and I'm sure I'll find the info there. I would have replied earlier but I couldn't find the thread, is there an easy way to find a lost thread that I might have over looked???? I hope you all will understand that I don't reply to lots of stuff that I should because I cannot locate the threads, it's most embarrassing, I've been on line since 1991 and I've used computers for the last 25+ years. TIA!!!! SLike

I hope you all watched the Derby - Smarty Jones, who won the Arky Derby won, what a race!!!!!

Are you talking about plants in general, brugs or icromas?
