What are pleached lime trees?

Wynantskill, NY(Zone 5a)

I often read of pleached lime trees in England. Does anyone know what they are??

Hi. I hope I can jump in? I heard once from another gardening friend from overseas that "Pleached Lime" refers to mainly Lindens that are pruned into formal shapes. They can also be other deciduous trees that are cut similar to how topiary is used for evergreens.

Here's a definition I found:

TRANSITIVE VERB: Inflected forms: pleached, pleach·ing, pleach·es
1. To plait or interlace (branches or vines, for example), especially in making a hedge or an arbor. 2. To shade or border with interlaced branches or vines.

Thanks for your replies! Now I know what they're talking about when they mention these. I believe there is an alle (sp??) of these at Sissinghurst.
