dogwoods

Orange, TX(Zone 9a)

I am a newbie and just trying to feel my way around on the correct path...but here is my first question (of many I am sure). When is the correct time to transplant a dogwood. My sisiter in law has acres and acres of land many dogwoods. We have tagged a few and was told recently that actually now is the time to transplant. I had always thought that you never transplant during the blooming season....anyone out there can help with this I would appreciate it..DEBBIE from Texas

Misty and they dormant time for a dogwood would be in the winter,,,like Jan or Feb right...if they are starting to bloom I would say we should wait til next year...don't you think? DEBBIE

When they bloom this spring, you might want to tie some nylon tags to the ones you want, so you can go back in the fall and dig the ones that caught your eye. If some are pink and others white, you can "color code" them to keep them straight...

If they are budding, don't move them. :) Terry is absolutely right. Wait until they lose all their leaves this fall. And oh how pretty they will be next year. We did that for a friend with redbuds and they are enormous in his yard now. People stop and ask where he bought them and he said a friend dug them from his farm. :) Make sure you fertilize and baby them when you move them.

Actually, I disagree about transplanting dogwoods in the fall. Late last summer, a client wanted large 2 pink dogwoods, and I did a LOT of research. Most of the experts say transplant all trees EXCEPT dogwoods in the fall.

As it happened, I found 2 large trees that had been in 20-30 gallon pots all summer and my client decided to take a chance... and they survived, but one looks poorly.

You are past the transplant time now in your zone, so maybe you might want to do your own Google search for verification of my remarks, or wait until early next spring.

Darius is right! :) Dogwoods in the spring, but yours are starting to bloom so no can do now. :)

Tks all for the info dog woods..I have then tagged. Darius we were told by a county agent in the area that now was the best time to transplant, so I am really confused. But I think I will wait until very early spring before they bloom to transplant and baby them as Misty advised. I hd to wait until they bloomed to be I had tagged the correct tree...so now am tagged and will just have to be a patient until next year...tks all...DEBBIE

Debbie, After reading your last post I decided to look up transplanting in Texas. Neither Darius or I live there and can only go on what we've read/heard (Darius have you lived TX?) In any event, I am posting a link here to the TX Cooperative Extension Service. Read and glean what you can from it. Good luck, Kathy
